Dang yall, thanks so much for the support 😭 Usually I ignore the random AI accusations but I wanted to take the chance to talk about how important it is to do your research in times like these. Didn't expect to get soooo many kind comments though! We gotta stick together, my beloved art community ♥️

Behold the Northern Lights - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/26wDexq
Our Sun provides the light and heat that energizes our plants, our solar panels and our weather, among other things. But its influence stretches over the horizon into our nights, as well. As our nearest star, the Sun bathes Earth in a steady stream of energetic particles, magnetic fields and radiation that can stimulate our atmosphere and light up the night sky, like the aurora borealis, or northern lights.

At 3:46 a.m. Eastern Tme on April 21, 2018, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired this image of the aurora borealis over North America. The nighttime image was made possible through VIIRS "day-night band," which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as airglow, auroras, wildfires, city lights, and reflected moonlight.

In this image, the sensor detected the visible light emissions that occurred as energetic particles from Earths magnetosphere rained down into the oxygen and nitrogen gases of the upper atmosphere. Around April 19, the Sun spewed a potent stream of particles and electromagnetic energy—a strong blast of solar wind—that arrived at Earth a few days later and stirred up our magnetic field. The interaction between these solar emissions and our magnetic field causes the particles already trapped around the planet to be accelerated down toward the atmosphere. The collisions make the auroral light.

Update 2015 Jan 06: Hubble has imaged the whole thing again with its WFC3 camera both in visible and infrared light! It's lovely! hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2015/01/image/c/

Just for fun. This is arguably Hubble's most famous image. A poll run at Asterisk in tandem with an APOD of the nebula asked readers if they had ever seen the image before and 95% of votes were yes.

Combining the f547m data on the green and blue channels allowed me to make the stars appear white rather than neon magenta. I also applied a good deal of sharpening. Filling the upper right corner with cloned data is tempting, but it's not really that bad if you color the missing data similarly to the surrounding sky. Besides, I'm quite fond of the way the telescope was positioned to fit the pillars into the WFPC2's funny framing.

Protostar in LDN 1527 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2o1cFqj
Update: Simeon Schmauß over on Twitter (@stim3on) recommended G'MIC for taking care of the horizontal noise / banding. It worked pretty great. There's a Photoshop plugin for it, too.

Wanted to process my own version of this one, since nebular landscapes are some of my favorite views. Having a hard time with the linear noise pattern, especially near the top of the image.

In the center of this view is a newly forming star crossed by a dark disk of dust (say that three times fast!) which is casting shadows to the left and right, and allowing cones of light out the top and bottom. Think of it like a light bulb inside of a donut with a bunch of fog. Though the infrared light can penetrate much of the dust, there are clues in the image that show some of the dust is still too thick to see through. At the lower right especially are a lot of background galaxies. On the left, the background galaxies are fewer, and what we see are dimmer, so we can tell there is more dust there.

You can see the official release here. They've got a much better description than I could ever write.

The Trifid Nebula with the INT - From Ángel López-Sánchez - flic.kr/p/2jWP5kf
The Trifid Nebula (M 20) in H-alpha (green) [O III] (blue) and [S II] (red filters) using the WFC (Wide Field Camera) instrument at the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain) in 2005.

This was one of the very first colour images using professional telescopes that I processed when I was doing my PhD at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Spain). I used this image for illustrating my PhD Thesis and for explaining H II regions. The data were taken by Sergio Simón-Díaz as a part of a study of Galactic HII regions we were conducting at the moment.

This is a reprocessing of the data I've done in 2020, where I performed some cleaning of saturated stars, color correction, removing artefacts, hot pixels, and selective smart sharpen for revealing some extra details. However, I can't find the original FITS data of the individual channels, so this has been done over the Photoshop file I created in 2006, when I first created the colour image.

The data is actually a mosaic including the blue reflection nebula (at its top in this image), but I have not reprocessed (yet) the other ccd as it is very tricky (plenty of artefacts and a very saturated star). I hope to eventually do it.

NGC 6369 "Little Ghost" - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/fJj6jT
NGC 6369
My take on this beauty. This one was very interesting to process because there were 6 different filters, 3 of which were narrow band. Roughly equivalent colors as follows:
Red: IR+NII
Green: 555w+Ha
Blue: 439w+OIII

A little background: Again, I used the usual NASA/Hubble Heritage/STScI image to give me ideas on how to execute my version. While theirs did a very good job of showing all the complex structures of the NII regions, it didn't show the fainter areas of H-a
much at all. It also had a strange but interestingly nacreous color scheme and I'm not entirely sure how it arrived at that. I was very tempted to make the NII regions a more aesthetically pleasing blue or red color instead of the green but then it would be very difficult to tell it from the other narrow band spectra.

Specific data used:
