I found this Gulf Fritillary in Macomb County, Michigan, today. As the name implies, its usual range is the southern United States, west to California. One will wander into Michigan every so often only to learn the hard way that it can't survive the winter. Go home, you silly creature!

If you're in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, come down to the Pleasant Peninsula Mural Festival to see Max Coleman's Kirtland's Warbler. Max's mural is just one of several that is being installed on Pearl Street underneath the US-131 overpass. All the murals are of endangered species.
