(HACK-uh) Posts are my thoughts, which means at least half of them are about The Boss. Postdoc at UW-Madison studying topological photonics I’m essentially a physicist with the fun and charisma of a chemist. And an ego obviously of a physicist.

This is cruel and hostile to TSA officers, which is why I support it.

I agree with the bottom line here (“vaping is bad for children and governments should do more to regulate it”) but I don’t buy the implied argument that the vaping is the cause of the mental issues as opposed to the other way around.

Tbh, I’m baffled by people who don’t do cursory Wikipedia searches for organizations like this. None of the three societies in the first paragraph have a Wikipedia article.

After I defended, my advisor’s toast mentioned the sheer amount of literature I’m able to stay atop of. The secret is just RSS feeds. They’re great and I’m trying to involve them more in my news habits too.

I’m wearing a black turtleneck today and it’s gotten me thinking a lot about Elizabeth Holmes (SFW). I think it’s important to distinguish “this isn’t possible yet” from “this isn’t possible” and I, perhaps naïvely, believe the former.

I know that for Python programming everyone loves UV now, but as a scientific programmer I find it sort of annoying how many people hate on miniconda/micromamba. You only think UV is a competitor because you haven’t used all the conda features (i.e. non-Python dependencies)

I think there’s a great amount of regulation-addressable space between “the self-aware computer systems will kill us all” and the current situation with AI, which I view as akin to someone testing bombs in their cul-de-sac or throwing toxic waste in the river.

Other delusions notwithstanding, big second-year grad student energy here: "I had five reactions that worked this week! At this rate I'll have enough for a paper by the end of the month and be able to defend in a year, year and a half tops."

In other hot takes: I have no opinion about the “true” result of the Michigan-Michigan State game and think this is a great example of the power behind survey-based rankings in sports.

I consider myself a rather strong anti-AI person but some people on here sound absolutely clueless about the capabilities (positive and negative) yet have very confident opinions.

“No graduate students were authorized to speak to journalists, but C&EN saw that chemists were back to work in the building on Aug. 31.” I have to assume that we’d know a lot more about this incident if it happened at a public university.

This is all self-sustaining nonsense and it’s exhausting. Hasan has campaigned with Democrats, so when he says something controversial they post tweets saying “we don’t agree with this guy” and then everyone keeps the issue alive by complaining about it

Nature Comms has fixed this now and I fully endorse the idea. The papers are comfortably readable and that’s all I cared about.

Many, many people on the left fall for the illusion that the GOP is filled with legislative geniuses who would be doing something differently if the roles were reversed. That’s not true! They just have Fox News!

Part of my contrarianism about “data centers” is that the arguments against them sound extremely similar to the ones I keep hearing about solar on farmland from people in my hometown

FWIW, the old ACS logo is still slated for use in awards and “ceremonial” roles and I can’t imagine anything more ceremonially important than Prof. Molenium’s lab coat

FYI: while Beshear and (bizarrely) Democratic voters keep talking about replacing Mitch McConnell, his absence is already helping Democrats. There’s no rush!

I’ve got some controversial thoughts here. I don’t know if it’s any less harmful for a rare book to sit in someone’s storage room for decades than for it to be destroyed for AI training.

You would imagine that this would increase the media’s negative coverage of Trump, but the most likely scenario is that we get an interview where a journalist earnestly asks “are you concerned about the safety of your pool” and he’ll say “no, I don’t care about you” and his approval will jump 10 pts

It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’m becoming more accepting of data centers as the reasons for opposing them become more and more nebulous. “Data centers are bad because they use too much electricity, which is why everyone should switch to running their own servers for AI”

The Mitch McConnell situation is the ultimate litmus test for determining if someone cares about governance or just vibes. McConnell being dead weight in the Senate is basically the best case scenario! Why would Beshear want to call an election to replace him?

I have a “friend who is too woke” take about this but it’s not important because the rest of the paper is so overwhelmingly obviously created by AI. Also there are a handful of “red flag” fields that I basically assume to be junk science if the results are not published in a notable journal.

This is actually very upsetting to me because how does this animation fit with the declared meaning of the logo? The “overlapping rings” is not part of the logo! The logo is supposed to include 4 “atoms” connected by the arcs.

It’s baffling to me that non-Republicans want Mitch McConnell to be replaced. He’s hoarding a seat and not voting, so the best case scenario is that he does this for as long as possible.

Maybe someday ChemDraw will have an AI “Generate” feature which lets you generate a structure that you can spend your PhD trying to synthesize.

Adobe Illustrator has some of the most egregiously annoying AI features in the 2026 edition and I might roll it back to an older version. If you crop an image but extend your crop further than the original, it automatically switches to “Generate” mode. That’s the opposite!

It’s gotta be relatively simple to vibe code something like ChemDraw with AI, right? It’s a bunch of lines with a sample library and pre-set constraints.

There are several variables in play*, but I got a cat (that I’m allergic to) and have been feeding him the Purina allergen-reducing food and after 3 weeks I don’t really notice any extra allergy issues. (I’m taking ~2 Claritin or Allegra per day and it’s possible my body has just accepted its fate)
