With Kanye claiming he's a Nazi and selling swastika T-shirts, I'm reminded of one of the more prescient books of the last few years from scholar Brandi Collins-Dexter (@brandicd.bsky.social). I interviewed her about the book three years ago. It predicted a lot more than just Kanye's latest turn.

MAGA has long tried to have it both ways, they gleefully traffic in antiBlackness while actively courting Black voters. They want to lay claim to being “real Americans” & playing into nativism, while also using the model minority myth to divide naturally aligned groups. Beyond MAGA, This is America
See, even Black conservatives can sniff out Candace’s hustle because her disdain for Black Americans—and really anyone with half a moral conscience—is too obvious. I don’t even know if she’s trying to hide it.even know if she’s trying to hide it. She gets really close to saying things like white nationalism is a hoax and Hitler would’ve been fine if he had kept the concentration camps in his country.

There’s a video clip of Candace fighting with Steve Bannon about whether to put resources into local Black communities. In it, he advocates for spending money on tech skills development and education programs in major cities to grow the economy.Proudly (and on camera) Candace responds, “And here’s where I disagree with your assessment.… So the problem that you’re facing is that, yes, Black Americans, Hispanic Americans should be competing, but do they want to?… [In Black Americans] you have people that are looking for excuses and looking to be victims..victims, and it’s being promoted in the culture.”

If you had told me that in a conversation between a Black woman and someone who has to repeatedly deny being a Neo-Nazi and white nationalist I would be more on the side of the person who calls himself a “race realist,” I would think you were nuts. But here we are. Welcome to my personal nightmare, where no one wins and we all go to hell.

A lot of the present discourse about H1-B visas mirror a debate I discussed in one of my essays (An Abomination of Obamanation) between Bannon & Candace Owens that was posted on YT (post 1/2) Steve Bannon Joins War Against Elon as MAGA Implodes newrepublic.com/post/189694/... via @newrepublic.com 1

Your point is a good one though, if top tier players can go to Cleveland or even Philly I feel like Baltimore can get there with the right moves. They overly rely on that narrative as a cop out for sure.

That’s not necessaily going to be the same deterrent to a lot of desireable football players. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Obviously Trump has always been a Ron Burgundy style empty vessel. Just like the first administration was made in Bannon’s image, this one will be made in Musk/Thiel’s image. It’s not clunky “MAGA,” it’s about making nationstates irrelevant. Project 2025 is window dressing, Zero to One is end game.

I can’t even just say them, it’s actually an indictment of our broader system how much this is taught through a narrow, US-centric perspective and (depending on the teacher/school) doesn’t delve into the root causes & wealth inequality aspects.

Piece includes a reminder of how Musk’s father’s conspiratorial mind & ethno-nationalist views likely influenced him. Also Thiel allegedly telling a Black female peer that “South Africa’s systematic denial of civil rights to black people was economically sound”. It reminds me of of when..
Article says: What do figures like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, David Sacks, Joel Pollak and Patrick Soon-Shiong have in common? They are public figures of considerable power and influence in the US – who all spent some part of their formative years in apartheid South Africa.article says: Elon Musk went to live with his father at the age of 10, and although relations between the two are highly acrimonious, even Isaacson’s pretty hagiographic biography suggests the two share certain similarities. Among them, suggests Isaacson, is a conspiratorial mindset: a tendency “to read wacky fake-news sites purveying conspiracy theories”.
Something Isaacson does not explore: whether growing up under the thumb of an unabashedly racist father in apartheid South Africa would shape Elon Musk’s future politics.

But the question is surely worth asking – not just of Musk, but of a remarkable number of other figures currently playing outsized roles in US politics. Article says: Chafkin interviewed two black female peers of Thiel’s who decades later both vividly remembered their encounters with him on this score.
Thiel allegedly told one: “It [apartheid] works”.

He allegedly told another that “South Africa’s systematic denial of civil rights to black people was economically sound”. (Thiel’s spokesperson denied all these encounters.)When tech billionaires fight culture wars

“The political views of tech entrepreneurs are not normally discussed or debated,” Newsweek noted earlier this year.
It is no exaggeration to say that Musk, Thiel and Sacks have changed all that.
Sacks is described as “quietly becoming the leading practitioner of a new right-wing sensibility that has emerged in the political realignments provoked by Trumpism and the pandemic”, in a 2022 New Republic profile which begins: “Like his pals Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, Sacks is using his wealth and online clout to unite conservatives and former leftists in a reactionary movement against liberalism”.

Sacks and Musk are former Democrats who have drifted right on a current of perceived victimhood, opposition to the “woke mind virus” and concerns about the future of Western (read: white) civilisation.
