It depends on the editions and books I think! Recently they made a change to their hardbacks so that they're a lot more inkeeping with other hardbacks on the market, leaving the in house editions to be the Special Editions.

Connemara marble is a rare green marble formed over 900 million years ago, and it's the official gem of Ireland. Each piece is cut from the official quarry at Lissoughter in Recess, Co. Galway and then handmade in Dublin, so no two are ever the same. 💚

Bellona, Roman Goddess of War - Bramble & Bone
Bellona, Roman goddess of war, held both the formal rite of declaring war and the blood-frenzy of her priests - and her trail runs to Roman Britain.
000
Bramble & Bone @brambleandbone.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
🗝️ She held the threshold of war - the formal declaration- alongside the frenzy that came with the fighting, kept by her black-clad priests on the Day of Blood. Two faces in a single pair of hands. 🛡️ And she reached these islands: a #Roman war #goddess with traces on the northern frontier.
100
Bramble & Bone @brambleandbone.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
⚔️ Most people meet #Bellona as a single line in a list of Roman gods - the female counterpart to Mars, and little else. 🏛️ Rome gave her a temple outside the sacred boundary, where the Senate met to weigh war and receive foreign envoys, and built the whole rite of declaring war around her column.
A deep red-toned photo of Roman soldiers in red tunics and chainmail, holding tall red shields marked with golden wings, with an iron spearhead crossing the frame. Overlaid text reads: New Blog - Bellona, Roman Goddess of War.

Vows in his name had to be sworn under the open sky - never under a roof. His temples had a deliberate hole cut in the ceiling so oaths sworn inside could still rise unobstructed. Roman houses had the atrium compluvium - that open roof section that let the sky in even indoors.

Bramble & Bone @brambleandbone.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
His name fuses dius (the bright sky-god aspect, cognate with Jupiter) and fidius (sworn faith, the binding power of a vow) - together they make him the divine oath-keeper.  The most distinctive thing about him is the oath rite itself.

🏛️ #Bellona, the goddess of war, was among them. She held temples at York and Carlisle, with further dedications and separate altars at Colchester and again at Carlisle - one of them an altar stone, found on the old Red-Dial Carlisle road.

🗡️ Where the legions marched, their gods marched with them. When the #Roman army came to Britain, it brought its full religious life along - carried in the altars and dedications of soldiers drawn from every corner of the empire. It's there  we find the majority of the military gods of Roman Britain.

⚔️ In front stood the columna bellica, the war-column. When a foe lay too far off for the old border rite, a priest hurled a spear over it towards enemy ground, and the column stood in for the frontier itself. It became a piece of foreign soil held inside Rome. #Bellona

Bellona's temple stood on the Campus Martius, deliberately outside Rome's sacred boundary, because armed force and foreign envoys were kept beyond that line. The Senate met here to receive generals returning from campaign, and to hear ambassadors who weren't allowed any further into the city. #pagan

Then there was Ma-Bellona. After the general Sulla dreamed of a war goddess handing him victory, Bellona's worship merged with that of Ma. This cult ran on frenzy. Her priests, the bellonarii, dressed in black and used ecstatic trance, cutting their own arms and legs and offering the blood to her.
