When you think you look macho and inspirational like George C. Scott in the opening monologue from "Patton" but you come across as a testosterone-addled idiot like George C. Scott playing Buck Turgidson in "Doctor Stranglelove."
George C. Scott in the opening monologue from "Patton," complete with silly uniform and oversized American flag backdrop.

This is 1000 times more suspenseful than the scene in that Star Wars movie when Anakin is fighting his way through the droid assembly line.

There's something kind of hilarious about building highly dextrous humanoid robots just so they can operate industrial tools built for human hands. There's a reason almost every industrial factory robot everywhere has built-in tools INSTEAD of hands.

Expanding on this point: it also only makes sense to choose “the devil you know” if your *only other option is also a devil.* We are more than two years out from the 2028 election. We should have more than enough time to find a non-devil, non-doucheass candidate.

The number of good movies to come out of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is pretty impressive when you consider it's a series based on a 1960a theme park ride. (That number is exactly "one.")

SPOILER: The tech oligarchs aren't proposing a slowdown on AI development because they are suddenly worried about public safety or human welfare. They're worried because they've been spending at an unsustainable rate and are trying to find a way to forestall the inevitable when the bubble bursts.

Claiming Americans were united under a common bond in the weeks after 9/11 without acknowledging the anti-Arab / anti-Muslim racism is like claiming Americans were united under a common bond after Pearl Harbor without acknowledging how Americans of Japanese ancestry were put in concentration camps.

The speed at which companies have been capitulating to Trump's every whim reminds me of that "Treehouse of Terror" episode (based on an earlier Twilight Zone episode) where Bart gets godlike powers and everyone races to help conform reality to his every whim.
Mrs. Crabapple announces that the nation's history has once again changed to match the answers on Bart's test, concluding "…and our country isn't called America animore, it's Bonerland."

Pretending that the tech oligarchs have no choice but to go along with every one of the Trump administration's whims isn't just a cop-out, it's objectively false. We know this in part because some companies (like MapQuest) have chosen not to do so. If you're going to capitulate, at least own it.

When Pulp Fiction came out one of my friends hated it for the sole fact that Saturday Night Fever had set such a high bar for John Travolta dance moves that the scene with John & Uma at Jack Rabbit Slim's felt like a rip-off.

Far too many people have allowed themselves to imagine that there is some kind of thought process behind LLMs, or even something approaching a human-like mind. That’s why it’s so important to peel back the facade once in a while to show just how little is really going on in there.

If there's an afterlife I'm sure Tim Curry is in heaven, but even if he was sent to the other place due to a clerical mix-up he would probably be just fine.

One of the things that bugs me about those creepy-ass Meta glasses is that if the devices had been developed as an assistive technology for visually impaired people instead of as a mass market product by a social media company, it could be genuinely improving lives instead of emboldening perverts.

This is the kind of vehicle/vanity plate combo Homer Simpson would appreciate because he read it as “GRILL BOSS.”
Homer Simpson proudly displays the swag he purchased at the Apron Expo: a flowery design labeled “GRRRL POWER” (which he misreads as “GRILL POWER”)

Sometimes I'm struck by how little tech innovation my teenagers have seen in their lifetimes compared to what I'd seen by the time I was their age. I watched the rise of personal computers, the internet, and eventually smartphones. They've seen iPhones get slightly thinner and the rise of AI slop.

Just say Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and it was a well-made film but I can’t stop imagining how awkward it must have been for a 60-foot-tall cyclops to milk a flock of regular-size sheep. That’s some real fine motor skill right there.

In the entire history of the United States we have had one (1) President who entered office with zero history of public service. Most people can probably guess who that was. How did that work out, assholes?

DOGE always reminded me of the message that would pop up in the original “Sim City” game if you tried to save money by cutting the road maintenance budget. (If you ignored the warning you’d always end up with disastrous road closures that cost you more in the long run).
A popup message with a traffic engineer’s face reads “YOU CAN’T CUT BACK ON FUNDING! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!”

The excuses that Graham Platner apologists are coming up with to wave away his many years of reprehensible behavior are starting to sound a lot like the crap Trump cultists say. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend, or even someone I want as my ally.

This is literally a bit from the cartoon “Adventure Time,” in which the villainous Ice King rebrands himself “Nice King” to trick all the local princesses into trusting him. Satire is dead and buried.

I can’t imagine anyone arguing that progressives should have ignored the bigotry of segregationist Strom Thurmond or the Red Scare antics of Joe McCarthy just because we didn’t live in those Senators’ states. The character and judgement of other states’ Senators directly impacts ALL Americans.

This is like giving the American public a 50% stake in Big Tobacco. It just creates a perverse incentive for the government to help an inherently toxic and destructive business model succeed instead of questioning whether it should exist at all.

I don't want Collins to win this race either, but if Platner makes it to the Senate he's going to be the worst candidate Democrats have put in power since Fetterman. No one can claim they didn't know what kind of human garbage Platner was after the Nazi tattoo story broke.

Why do I get the impression that Trump imagines himself watching this fight from an elevated throne, waiting for the climactic moment when he gets to give the "thumbs down" sign as the victor holds a blade to his defeated opponent's throat?

I've been a fan of Robbie Conal's guerilla poster art since the 1980s; he has a delightfully grotesque portraiture style that emphasizes every pore and wrinkle. I think RFK Jr. may be the first one I've seen where the caricature is less visually disturbing than the real thing.
RFK Jr., the less-attractive cousin of that "Hoggle" guy from the 1986 film "The Labyrinth."

These fucking ghouls are getting EXACTLY what they voted for; it's not like Trump ever made any real effort to pretend he respected their Christian beliefs. They wanted a President who would hurt all the people they didn't like and that's exactly what they got.

Creating a stricter code of conduct for this agency will do nothing given that they have proven time and time again that they won’t follow laws or guidelines that are already on the books. Dismantling ICE entirely is the only solution. Schumer isn’t rising to the moment.

I’d say we are at the “General Ripper from the movie Dr. Strangelove” level of government malfeasance, except that’s kind of unfair since the President in Dr. Strangelove recognized General Ripper was a nut and did everything in their power to stop him.
