My institution published its budget and the amount of money collected from students for education basically matches the amount given out in student aid. The average student who pays is not paying for themselves, they are paying for the person sitting next to them.

Oh, no, we already have the Real Scientists using agentic LLMs to review the PRs. One is can guess how other reviews are likely done ....

The thing is that this means Word is baked into the future. You can never move away from it because of past generations inability to learn new technologies. "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only Word"

It has been explained to me that you need to "light yourself up like a Christmas tree" and you look decidedly non-festive there.

Went to UCSC and now work there. As I said, a huge chunk of staff and faculty do not live in SC.

There is a bit more on campus faculty housing which is a lot less expensive than living in town. Or you can do what half of the faculty and staff do and live outside of the county (or even the state!)

Hence the following statement from the AAS: Therefore, referees may not use — in any aspect of the refereeing process — any LLM that might use uploaded material for training.

It is my experience that assholes love clear bright lines and strict rules, because then they can just hangout barely inside those lines and say "tell me what rule I violated!" while still ... well ... being assholes.

My mom had them, and, worse, for her last years the place she lived used a separate CVS company that provides meds for institutions. My mom had four different accounts. One them still sends updates like "you owe $2.13" followed a month later by "we are crediting you with $2.13"

I was super lucky and my mom had long term care insurance, a thing that will never exist again. As Medicare will be zeroed out soon enough, I just assume that I will die in a ditch somewhere of cancer?

See Benne, this is what you cannot understand as a European. In America, certain rights are inalienable, like endangering your neighbors with a car. Other things, however, are too important for individuals to decide, like what color to paint your house.

At some point, and this is much younger than you think, you realize that you have to parent your parents. This ain't a boomer thing, this is just a dealing old people with no self-awareness thing. Just work not to become your parents

There is no enforcement for cars. We have tons of pedestrian deaths where I am and the response is literally more signs, flashing lights, and paint on the road. The flashing signs helpfully tell people they are speeding and they JUST IGNORE THEM. Bur sure, its the bikes that are the problem.

Where I live, the US, people drive through stop signs, run red lights (a non-US acquittance was told **when taking his driving test** never go on a green light because people always run reds) and people speed all of the time. I see traffic enforcement maybe once a year?

Anecdotally I have been almost run over by cars driving against the lights and through intersections which I, as a pedestrian, am allowed to cross. It is like these drivers of cars and trucks think they are fully above the law! Maybe we should ban cars until we figure this out.

LA should be a cycling paradise. It is mostly flat, you can ride like 11 months of the year (well maybe not in Burbank) and the traffic is terrible, so many should want to ride.

FWIW I would recommend the bigger tires, I crammed 28 on my 2013 bike and, cause I run a lower tire pressure, it is a nicer ride on our crater filled streets here.

My commute, a local university, has the best rate of routes in the county. At best it's 20 minutes from the transit center to work, but can be 30-40. I can ride a bike to work in 40 and home in 20. (Do the math on the hill involved.) And the bike never closes a door on my face because it is full.

Good luck trying to tell people this, though. “But a bad thing just happened, I saw it on the news/read about in my feed!” People evaluate risk and quality of life based on the worst case anecdotes, not based on the overall experience. If things are on average better, well that is just normal now.
