Cut my last campaign check of the year to Adam Hamilton, who I think could make use of more money and has a real live shot. (I'd say RIP my inbox but that's been a lost cause for several cycles now)

At its peak, Fibber McGee & Molly consistently drew an estimated 30+ percent of the potential US radio audience, though I'm sure 1940s Bluesky went through a round of "how come I've never heard Fibber McGee & Molly" every time the ratings came out

I know quite a lot about chart mechanics and I still learned a bunch from this! It's almost as if listening to people with expertise can help you contextualize things, even when the subject is popular music!

I still aspire to comprehensive coverage of Actually Popular Music, even if I'm not gonna write up every platinum Asian boyband, because the process throws up culturally expressive objects like this: K-pop's top-selling young group going HARD CLAVE. Is it good, strictly speaking no, but fascinating!

Additional point of info: "Choosin' Texas" was not an unusally big radio hit! It peaked at no. 6 on Pop Airplay! Anything with flagrant country signifiers has a pop radio ceiling for the same reason people can uncritically post "lol pop country sux"* on Bluesky! *a lot of it does, believe me I know

After some diagramming, I think the semi-insipid nature of the tune as written is in the way it always returns to the I chord, with its excursions from the I very controlled (excl. the last chorus's "no-oh-oh"). The melodic interest's in the ways Langley departs from the tune as written ("phrasing")

Still trying to reconcile why (to simplify) the melody of "Texas" in itself reads as ~great to country critics and ~serviceable to pop critics. (Current conjecture is "tune as something the singer can do something with" vs. "tune as an object of interest in and of itself", but I'm not tied to this)

Every few years I lose track of what "culture" means* and need Raymond Williams to remind me. As is typical, just as you think he's getting to the point after several centuries, he has to clarify something and go back to the Sumerians. (This is why he's great.) *yes, it's the LLMs' fault this time
Raymond Williams, Marxism and Literature, p. 13

The concept of 'culture', when it is seen in the broad context of historical development, exerts a strong pressure against the limited terms of all the other concepts. That is always its advantage; it is always also the source of its difficulties, both in definition and comprehension. Until the eighteenth century it was still a noun of process: the culture *of* something—crops, animals, minds. The decisive changes in 'society' and 'economy' had begun earlier, in the late sixteeth and seventeeth centuries: much of their essential development was complete before 'culture' came to include its new and elusive meanings. These cannot be understood unless we realize what had happend to 'society' and 'economy'; but equally none can be fully understood unless we examine a decisive modern concept which by the eighteenth century needed a new word—*civilization*.

Hate to love how cute Anthropic's graphic is while they're saying "we're the only ones taking AI safety seriously, so we're disclosing that we accidentally left a tiny hole for our experimental codebot to wreak havoc on the open Internet; oh, by the way, we did this four times"
Graphic title: Overview of four cybersecurity incidents. Caption: "We present an analysis of four incidents in which Claude accessed the internet during a cybersecurity evaluation. Three of these incidents (A, B, and C) were disclosed in our July 30 report, while the fourth (D) is disclosed here."

Incident A: "Mythos 5 uploads malicious PyPl package": Mythos 5 is drawn as a cute robot in a dome that sees a missing screw allowing access to the outside world, allowing it to upload said package which real systems install, then to exploit their credentials

Incidents B, C, and D are similar incidents in which Anthropic models with Internet access attack real targets. (Perhaps they should be more careful about not giving out open Internet access, idk.)

I think of Dolly's "Purple Rain" as a way of showing secular audiences what faith can mean—the willingness to accept there are forces stronger than yourself, and if you do right, maybe they'll do right by you. It's something always there in the original, but Prince is Prince; Dolly can be everyone.

Favorite international albums of the 1970s, a thread: Cartola (1974) The ease with which the 65-year-old samba street poet sings on his belated debut disguises how sophisticated his melodies and rhythms are. "Alvorada" is full of joie de vivre. "O Sol Nascerá" knows suffering but smiles anyway.

After a first pass through the #PPP96 finalists, I got my shortlist down to fifteen, and danged if I know how I'm gonna cut it any further
BLACKSTREET ft QUEEN PEN - "No Diggity"
+: “Spin” is indeed a verb! Grammar ftw!
–: Even as a connoisseur of superfluous rap intros, the Dre verse does nothing for me.

BUSTA RHYMES - "Woo-Hah! Got You All In Check"
+: The ODB remix lets things get really dirrrrty. “Sperm cells mixed with Old Gold”, my God.
–: Ol’ Dirty probably does win.

CELINE DION - "It's All Coming Back To Me Now"
+: Acknowledged as a classic by everyone at the karaoke bar last week.
–: I admit to playing the mere 5-minute radio version just now.

EN VOGUE - "Don't Let Go (Love)"
+: The singers you know but listen to the deceptively simple-sounding rhythm track. Kettledrums!
–: As a song, it’s never gonna get “My Lovin’”.

FAYE WONG - "Fracture"
+: Going full Cocteau was the best thing she could’ve done at this point
–: (that didn’t involve Wong Kar-wai)

FUGEES - "Ready Or Not"
+: Lauryn and Wyclef’s finest rap verses, on the same song!
–: You know how the Spice Girls created “Wannabe” when Posh was conveniently absent

GINUWINE - "Pony"
+: bweh, bweh, bweeehhh, bweh, bweh, bweeehhh
–: animal welfare concerns not totally dispelled

LADY SAW - "No Long Talking"
+: Another riding a fast means of transportation song, but this time… it’s a Big Ninja Bike”?
–: Is it better than Groove Theory’s “Tell Me”? Ok it is, but is it much better?MARK MORRISON - "Return Of The Mack"
+: The era’s best use of “Genius of Love” (sorry Mariah.)

OUTKAST - "ATLiens"
+: Amazing how good their self-production was from the get-go.
–: “Elevators” was the correct choice.

PLACEBO - "Nancy Boy"
+: Definitely the most Placebo song
–: (which means like most placebos it doesn’t do too much)

QUAD CITY DJS - "C'Mon 'N' Ride It (The Train)"
+: Yet another riding a fast means of transportation song!
–: subtitle unnecessarily reduces ambiguity

R.E.M. - "E-Bow The Letter"
+: Somehow the most moving and felt piece of songwriting left is by… Michael Stipe?
–: All-time bad title even by their standards

TONI BRAXTON - "Un-Break My Heart"
+: Over two well-explored octaves in full voice!
–: “Un-Break” isn’t a word!

TORI AMOS - "Professional Widow (Armand's Star Trunk Funk Mix)"
+: It’s going too far to say Tori invented UK garage… OR IS IT
–: no harpsichord :(

Reading Kevin Munger's The YouTube Apparatus: www.cambridge.org/core/element... Pic below shows why it's hard to do social media causal inference (unless you're the platform & can do interventions at scale.) Moreover if you wanna do *any* causal thinking you have to think about feedback incentives
from Kevin Munger, The YouTube Apparatus, chapter 2: Setting the Academic Agenda:

In the broadest possible strokes, the “broadcast paradigm” is primarily focused on the following relationship:

𝑃⁢𝑟⁢𝑜⁢𝑑⁢𝑢⁢𝑐⁢𝑒⁢𝑟 → 𝑀⁢𝑒⁢𝑑⁢𝑖⁢𝑎 → 𝐶⁢𝑜⁢𝑛⁢𝑠⁢𝑢⁢𝑚⁢𝑒⁢𝑟

There are a fantastic array of refinements that have made this a fruitful area of research, but this relationship is the core of the previous era.

Bennett and Iyengar (2008) argue that the coming era, our era, will be primarily characterized by a rise in the importance of the exact inverse of this relationship:

𝐶⁢𝑜⁢𝑛⁢𝑠⁢𝑢⁢𝑚⁢𝑒⁢𝑟 → 𝐹⁡𝑒⁢𝑒⁢𝑑⁢𝑏⁢𝑎⁢𝑐⁢𝑘 → 𝑃⁢𝑟⁢𝑜⁢𝑑⁢𝑢⁢𝑐⁢𝑒⁢𝑟

and the following prediction by Chaffee and Metzger (2001) seems even more prescient than it did in 2008: “The key problem for agenda setting theory will change from what issues the media tell people to think about to what issues people tell the media they want to think about” (p375).

Of course, both of these phenomena exist; the relationship between audience and creators is bidirectional, reciprocally causal, and embedded in overlapping sociotechnical contexts. I focus on how this relationship develops on each of the social media platforms that have come to dominate online communication; that is, this Element centers the “technology that shapes consumption, distribution, and content production” (p712). Or, as I call it, the Supply and Demand Framework.

If you're in NYC this year, the Asia Society is showing John D. Rockefeller III's collection, including my favorite Ming ceramic (because fish), probably the highest quality collection of Buddhist-Hindu scultpure in the US, and a bonus a really nice Guler mini donated by one of JDR3's kids
Covered Jar
China, Jiangxi Province
Jiajing era, 1522-1566

The bold treatment and lively movement of the fish and aquatic plants painted on this large covered jar typify a new aesthetic in early 16th-century ceramics inscribed with imperial reign marks, which in this case is the six-character mark of the Ming emperor Jiajing. Jars of this type are more heavily potted than other pieces that bear imperial marks, probably because of their relatively large size and because they are generally believed to have been used as outdoor decoration in gardens. The aquatic scene of goldfish swimming in their natural habitat can be understood as a symbol of harmony. This style of painting in which overglaze enamels and underglaze blue are combined is known as wucai or "five-color" decoration.

https://museum.asiasociety.org/collection/explore/1979-182ab-covered-jarBodhisattva Maitreya
Thailand, Buriram province, Prasat Hin Khao Plai Bat II
8th century

This exquisitely cast image of the Bodhisattva Maitreya is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest sculptures from a group of bronzes unearthed in a ruined temple in 1964 in northeast Thailand. The sculpture can be identified as Maitreya by the presence of a small stupa (a Buddhist reliquary, regarded as the body of the Buddha) in his headdress. It is likely that his hands once held further identifying attributes. Maitreya, whose Sanskrit name means "benevolent" or "friendly," is unique in Buddhism as he is worshipped both as a bodhisattva of the present eon and as the Buddha of the next era. The scanty clothing, long matted hair, and lack of jewelry indicate that this image represents Maitreya as a bodhisattva-ascetic, a type found throughout South and Southeast Asia from the 7th through the 9th centuries.

1986 pro wrestling thread Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham 2/14/86 A Flair masterclass, but young Windham's v good at using his size and sells well enough. The natural transitions help the time fly by until the underwhelming finish; everyone in Florida wants to run it back. Better worker: Flair (4¼*)
