I frigging love how phones recording exposed the prevalence of violence and racism.. But hate how quickly it was restructured into a giant corporate surveillance machine

Seven days I say that the butcher had pork for $9/kg. So I bought lots and dry cured it. Today I smoked it for 4 hours. This evening I made chicken bacon pasta.

I wish the self sufficiency, vege garden, preserves, off grid groups on the Internet weren't also into tradwife, kill the sodomites, antivax, and white supremacy. Why is my supermarket avoidance and understanding how things are made so overlapping with this, and the groups so tolerant of this....

This is absolute bullshit. I know so many 70+ year olds who won't eat brocoli because it's "new" and unfamiliar. Won't eat kale cos that's what cows eat. Won't eat capsicums cos they're too hot. Won't eat fish cos they won't... Won't eat this that and the other thing www.rnz.co.nz/life/wellbei...

Why fussy eating didn't exist 100 years ago
Modern kids are picky eaters because we give them too many ultra processed snacks and don’t let them get hungry, a food historian says.

I'm not convinced this was as widespread as people remember. It was a status symbol to say the wife didn't work, but plenty did. The era of a married woman not doing labour beyond childcare was brief, and held up by colonialism and exploitation of others.

Stating the obvious but it plays to the idea of the old two parties are grown ups, while Maori, women, are children.

Plenty of strides into normalising parenting as men's work too. And we changed parenting too. Can't just hit the kid with a belt when they don't meet your expectations now. Tho we know plenty of nzers still beat their kids.

People aspired to it. For sure. New Zealand had job adverts plenty saying whether a job was for an unmarried woman. Plenty of forces at play. Automation of household chores (laundry! Fridges.) Feminist thought. Rights (still working in those). Disconnection, and no crops to harvest is another.

Alongside the worldwide diversity. The 1950s usa housewife was a small population, narrow demographic, yet somehow the story of that idea fell into our history as normal ..

Potato enthusiast 🇵🇸🥔 @br3nda.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yeah that was a thing, but it was a brief from 1950s to 1970s... Before that both worked. Locally. At home in your farm, bakery, greengrocery, butchery,..... Women working was normal until suddenly the idea of them not "working" became a status symbol.

I hate tourism, and how much of a hard-on our successive governments has for it. Taking our local wonders and pricing it out of reach of our families. Creating jobs paid lower then the current average, driving wages down. Building infrastructure only for the needs of people who are passing thru.

Potato enthusiast 🇵🇸🥔 @br3nda.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The good news is we still have trains. We could fix this so easily by considering it transport not tourism.

Somehow it's become unchallenged that we are solo units of parents+ children, disconnected from our parents & adults siblings, our neighbours... Every struggle is some capitalist individual household struggle now. Everyone gets things wi money to some chain corporation. Food. Clothing. Childcare.

School holidays exist in colonial culture as a comprise with parents because they needed the children's labour at crop planting time and at harvest. It was also how the children earned to do these things that school doesn't teach.

Potato enthusiast 🇵🇸🥔 @br3nda.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The school holidays are not new.whats new in the last few generations is not being able to bring kids with u to work, not having grandparents and aunts to help, that's probably the biggest factor in the struggle these days.

Potato enthusiast 🇵🇸🥔 @br3nda.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
News stories about parents struggling with school holidays are after school are. These tell the real struggle but they seldom delve deep enigh into how we got like this.

Why does Hansard publish some days' transcripts inconsistently? Most of the data is recorded under the day it happened, but then it suddenly appears as a multi-day session, so u need to look up 9th to see what happened on 12th. handful of these in the 30 years hansard.parliament.nz/hansard-tran...

BTW, yeast is pretty similar to sourdough starter if you want to make it. It's flour plus sugar plus some left over dough or the dredges at the bottom of the fermenter from making beer. Bonus points if you grow the wheat... I haven't grown sugar yet but maybe elnino year is when I try. Hmm.

Potato enthusiast 🇵🇸🥔 @br3nda.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
For slugs, a bit of yeast and warm water, in a jar, level with the soil, and they will happily drown themself. Some people use beer, but yeast is cheaper and more convenient.
