I’ve used historic air photos to characterize post-logging and fire suppression conifer encroachment into meadows in the Sierra Nevada. They can be wonderful tools. Doesn’t hurt that the WW2 military reconnaissance imagery is fairly high resolution.

Is he allowed to keep the remaining $26,111 in illegal contributions? If so, it doesn’t sound like much of a disincentive to violate the state’s campaign finance laws.

Conservative groups seem to be dropping a lot of money on ballot initiatives in Colorado, too, which seems like a wild use of resources.

Bridget Platt @bptt.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
A lot of the ballot measures are deceptively named and worded, and I’m afraid they’ll pass because of it. They have a couple anti-tax, a pro-fossil fuel, and an anti-protected species act that they dressed up in pseudo-progressive language. And then an anti-trans one disguised as anti-trafficking.

Bridget Platt @bptt.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I’m deeply confused what Republicans think they have to gain putting these kinds of resources into Colorado. The one state to vote more democratic in the last election while other blue states shifted right. Also a state where the DSA just won a primary in a dark blue district.

I keep getting mass text messages from Republican groups asking me to vote on the slate of regressive measures they managed to get onto the ballot. Like fuck for voter id referendum. Fuck your three anti-trans measures. Fuck your mass incarceration measure. Fuck your anti-environmental one too!

It’s a combination of the special formulation and the quality of oil they’re set up to refine. CA refineries are built to refine Bakersfield crude, which is pretty low quality. Big part of why CA historically imported oil of similar grade from South America.

Bridget Platt @bptt.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Oregon doesn’t have sales tax, and California taxes gas fairly heavily. Additionally, oil companies have always jacked up California’s prices because they figure people could afford to pay more. CA produces oil, but it’s low quality that is more expensive to refine, OR doesn’t produce any.

I passed out last night and fell over the the bannister above the stairs at my house, and ended up getting to spend the rest of the night in the ER. I got extremely lucky, not only did I not die but I didn’t even break any bones. But it still hurts like heck. 0/10, do not recommend.

NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%. 80%! A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

I ❤️ lidar! Having fun with a 0.5m lidar dataset of Death Valley, California. Both images are of the playa near Willow Canyon.
Meanders and ox-bow channels in the lake bed. Total elevation contrast across the image is ~1m. Red colors indicate higher elevations, dark green lower elevations.

I wasn’t able to locate them, but there should be WW2 military intelligence aerial photos of that area. The Army collected them incase Japan invaded California. They tend to be high quality and are usually online. That should make it easier to ID the location.

I’m assuming that a major produce packing house of that era would have been on the rail line for logistics. The USGS has 1931 and a 1947 topo maps of that area that show the locations of buildings. Not sure which it is, but there are only a few options. ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/vie...

Checkerboards in general impede management and public access, but usually counties oppose consolidation as it can result in a loss of tax revenue, if the new private parcels end up in another co and they get left with increased Fed lands.
