RPS English Pharmacy Board member Mike Maguire highlights the risk of missing the opportunity to shape the future of pharmacy. Voting closes at 5pm, Monday 24 March. Vote now: ow.ly/Ekjw50VkA5s #RPSVote
“When it comes to decision-making, we pharmacists are normally pretty risk averse. However, in terms of the transition to the Royal College of Pharmacy, the greatest risk is that we miss this game-changing opportunity to elevate the standing of pharmacy with government, with other healthcare bodies, and with the public.
Let’s take this opportunity to positively shape our future. Please vote yes and confirm the resolution!”

Membership categories remain the same and any change requires a special resolution vote - The exercise we are conducting right now to change the charter. There is a new clause about associate membership (≠full membership) which could facilitate a faculty if SPGs wished to come under the RC umbrella.

Making dinner for the kids so will circle back but… The changes don’t grant any new powers to the exec. The governance arrangements will change but like now, the governance board will consist of a member elected majority.

Clearly not likening to the regulator. Expect it autocorrected from GPC which is an offshoot of the BMA. Can’t comment on the motivations of the PDA. It is notable that they are the only organisation to have come out against the proposal.

This is also covered in the FAQs. We engaged with members and non-members during the roadshow events last year across the whole country with all welcome. Students and Foundation trainees were very enthusiastic and, quite rightly, disappointed that the charter doesn’t allow them a vote.
100
Brendon Jiang @bpharmjiang.bsky.social · 14/03/2025
Correct. I think there was a scattergraph from the roadshow showing all the health profession Royal Colleges. All were charities except the RCN which is a trade union. Pharmacy already has two strong trade unions.
000
Brendon Jiang @bpharmjiang.bsky.social · 14/03/2025
The FAQ’s cover this in section 6. In a nutshell, the Charities Act 2011. I’m comfortable to shift that from the charter to regulations because our purpose as pharmacists is to improve health. To me the interests of pharmacists practicing pharmacy and public benefit are mutually inclusive.
