Ilkley - the moor and the town - looking mighty fine this morning. Huge thanks to @ilkleylitfest.bsky.social for inviting me to speak, looking after me so well and putting on a great event, and thanks to all who attended or watched online - the turnout was fantastic!

Only just seen this: Bowie in 1993 'arguing that violence is justified in extreme circumstances' against racism/fascism and saying he'd 'retaliate physically with every last breath of my body' if his loved ones were targeted (pic from Bowie Fascination FB group)

Fascinated by this moment in typography: the revolution of 1958 when Cambridge University Society of Arts went from serif to sans, and in a big way. Of all the things I've found while clearing my mum's old house, this is (perhaps weirdly) one of my favourites

Lovely to see my book in the Guardian's list of 70 Brilliant Books for the Summer! Thanks to those who compiled the list and those of you who've bought the book (and to @vendicepartners.bsky.social for letting me know about this) www.theguardian.com/books/ng-int...

Obviously the conversations around Bowie were astonishing - McCaslin was to Blackstar what Ronson was to Ziggy - but McCaslin's own work is fantastic too and deserves to be heard far and wide. Great to meet him and get my copy of his latest album signed. And he's v nice!

Most pleased to be appearing at this year's Also Festival! It takes place in July in a lovely corner of Warwickshire, and is packed with fascinating talks and great food and music and whatnot and is, well, Quite a Thing. I'm much happier about all this than the photo suggests

This may well be great but I'm a bit alarmed by this bit of the press release (Harty wasn't 'reduced' to anything - he was just being Harty, and Bowie didn't seem in control of very much at all)

There's something I find incredibly artistic about this somehow. It's like a moving painting. (No sound)

This sticker was used on the tour - it looks like that word is Isolar, spelt in a version of Bowie's own 'Isolaric Alphabeth' - and it doesn't half make me think of a similar design used 40 years later, again with its own alphabet(h)

When I was writing my book, all I really wanted was to see in my local Waterstones one day. And now - there it is, between Matthew McConaughey and Paul McCartney! There's been plenty else going in the book's first week out in the world. Here are some particularly lovely things:

She barely sold a painting in her life, but she could be brilliant. Here are a couple of my favourites (the one on the left is Trafalgar Square on the day of the 1981 Royal Wedding)

My mother, a simply extraordinary woman named Priscilla, died on Wednesday night. She had a rare and priceless gift of being able to see beauty in anything, while being ferociously discerning. A fierce wit, an enchanted disposition, wild, magical, deeply and unsentimentally loving

My book is published today in the USA! Blimey If any American readers are baffled by the book's references to Floella Benjamin, Paul Daniels and Zig & Zag, I apologise - just get in touch and I'll explain everything (And it's on the front page of @barnesandnoble.com's site!)

On BBC iPlayer at the moment is one of the most heartbreakingly brilliant things I've ever seen. I first watched it when I was eight and it's fair to say it stayed with me. An astonishing and unique piece of art

Along the way, we meet a cast of extraordinary characters, from Kierkegaard and Nietzsche to the theologian Paul Tillich and Dion Fortune, a woman who fought the Nazis with magic. There are new interviews and some lovely previously unseen snippets from his archive

Bowie called it the strand that ran through his remarkably varied career. Turns out he was right. It's there on all his great albums and in many of his best-known songs: Space Oddity, Starman, Golden Years, "Heroes", Let's Dance, Modern Love, right up to Blackstar and Lazarus

Pretty thrilled to announce that my book will be published on January 15! It's called David Bowie and the Search for Life, Death and God. It’s published by @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social and tells the story of Bowie's spiritual explorations - and why they were fundamental to his work

We all know the Grammys are a farce but this would have been a hilarious letter to send to Bowie at any point in the past 50 years, let alone after he'd died

I was lucky enough today to be among the first people to use the Study Room at the V&A's David Bowie Centre. It's the place where you can examine paper records - his notes, handwritten lyrics, jotted-down ideas, those kinds of things. If you're interested in that stuff, you'll love it there

One of the weird things Bowie does to you: you end up reading stuff you never otherwise would. He's been dead for ages and he's still doing it. I hadn't even heard of this book until last week

Ha, yes! And good to hear David Buckley given his dues, too - completely agree re Strange Fascination, and this battered old thing was my Little Red Book back in the day. It happens to fall open (and apart) on relevant pages!
