These results highlight the different strategies mosses can use to withstand sudden environmental change, and the need to better understand the resilience of epiphytic communities to increasingly frequent extreme events. #Bryophytes #Mosses #PlantEcology #ForestEcology #ClimateChange

But they did not all respond in the same way. ☀️ H. sericeum increased carotenoid concentrations, pigments involved in protection against excess light. 🌿 L. sciuroides showed a morphological response, bending its branches to protect sensitive tissues.

🔬 The study, lead by Pere Miquel Mir-Rosselló, followed three common epiphytic mosses: • Homalothecium sericeum • Leucodon sciuroides • Leptodon smithii Despite the abrupt increase in exposure, mortality was very low in all three species.

Effect of sudden exposure due to canopy damage on three epiphytic mosses
Extreme climatic events, including intense storms, are expected to increase in the Mediterranean Basin due to global change. Intense storms, such as the storm Juliette which hit the island of Mallo...

The activity ended with a field trip along the coast to identify areas where invasive algae may occur and put what we had learned into practice. Many thanks to the PN Peninsula de Llevant and everyone who joined us! #InvasiveSpecies #MarineAlgae #Mediterranean #PNLlevant

🔬 Participants learned how to identify several invasive algae already present in the region, as well as species not yet recorded in the #BalearicIslands, an important step for early detection. 📲 We also used the #CitizenScience tool #Biodibal_UIB to help report observations.

During winter, we carried out a first field campaign 📍to collect material for DNA extraction and analysis of leaf trait variation. We have now returned to the field to collect seeds that will be sown under controlled conditions next autumn.

🌿 The project focuses on Crepis triasii, a Balearic endemic species distributed across a strong climatic gradient in the Gymnesian Islands. This species shows substantial variation in functional traits 🍃 that may be the result of adaptation to local environments.

🌱 Interestingly, Diplotaxis ibicensis lacks obvious specialized traits for long-distance dispersal. Even so, the genomic data reveal a complex history of colonization, isolation and genetic differentiation among populations.
100
BOTLAND @botland-uib.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
🏝️ The results show that present-day populations are not explained by an ancient land connection. Instead, they support rapid and recurrent long-distance dispersal events across marine barriers.
