Additionally, Unfamiliar is a much more ambitious book, longer for sure, with more characterization, more drama, things that push my creative comfort zone. And that last bit? Just imposter syndrome; imposter syndrome comparing me against my past self.

I fretted and fretted over if this book would measure up to the positive reception that the first received, and worried if I had somehow become a worse writer. In retrospect, I don't think that was the case; sequels are notoriously hard to write and anxiety is natural.

Writing The Light of Unfamiliar Stars was a much more difficult endeavor than Destroyers, and while writing I wondered if part of that might have been due to catching Covid in-between. I sometimes couldn't think of simple words I wanted, and keeping the whole story in mind was a challenge.
