So for this month, I watched a film that came across my Letterboxd because of one review or another... DEMONS from Toshio Matsumoto. Absolutely an exhausting, dark film that obliterates all lines. Love twists our soul and humanity, indeed. I feel completely changed after this one.

THE ICEMAN COMETH is Clarence Fok, Maggie Cheung, Yuen Biao, and Yuen Wah greatness. Continuing my Maggie filmography, finally getting to watch this 80s awesomesauce and it's brutal with an incredible final fight. Maggie's little demon laugh is amazing. Biao is awesome, too.
Maggie Cheung with a cigarette between her index and middle finger, a white scarf billowing around her neck and glorious shades concealing her hotness. Beautiful hair and a wine gass in her left hand. From the film THE ICEMAN COMETH.

Damn, the anime is so gorgeous and this Grimoire Edition has me excited. Basically a deluxe version ala Berserk, Vinland Saga, etc that companies have been doing. WITCH HAT ATELIER deserves it, too, because Kamome Shirahawa deserves it. The art, man. THE ART.

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE was aggressively fine. Everything about it was fine and breezy, too many quick segments plastered one after another. The animation was quite gorgeous, and Bowser and his kid were enjoyable but that's about it.

PROJECT HAIL MARY is spectacular and another awesome film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It's HOPEcore but I don't really care, and with Greig Fraser behind the cinematography, it's so stupendously beautiful it makes me giddy. So giddy.

I have now read both RED RISING and GOLDEN SON in basically 4 to 5 days each. GOLDEN SON I just finished and it's incredible with Brown quickly getting even better at writing. The ending was so staggering I gave my dad money to go get me the third. Give me this book in the Deluxe Slipcover way.

THE BLUFF was great the first hour ish, but it got steadily worse with a horrible end fight between Karl Urban and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Green screen schlock and bad editing, it just didn't work. Also no swashbuckling even slightly, a waste.
With blood dripping from both her nose and lower lip, smeared blood across her throat, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is ready to fight to protect what's hers. Her sister-in-law and son in the fuzzy background, against a tree. From the film THE BLUFF.

ANGEL TERMINATORS 2 is a better sequel than some folks give it credit for. Why? Yukari Ôshima's looking as cool and tough as ever. This film also goes REAL damn dark, and doesn't let up. Plus Moon Lee's a cutie most of the feature.

FIGHT AGAINST EVIL 3 is magnificent. Astonishing fighting that has influence from some Baby Assassins goodness, plus Xie Miao doing awesome work again under Yang Bingjia. With Bingjia behind the camera, he makes it more charming and intense. Appreciated.

SHELTER is another Jason Statham film and not a good one. The inciting incident that brings Mason and the girl together is the girl being a dumbass, and then she proceeds to do nothing of note. A shame but the fighting wasn't all too exciting.

So I have a Barnes and Noble closer to my house than the last one I went to, and me and my dad went this morning... Absolutely GORGEOUS place with a healthy supply of books, manga, Criterion, and other sorts. Me and my dad have suggested going monthly with one another. Hell yeah.

THE FORBIDDEN CITY is an action film that rocked my heart. From director Gabriele Mainetti, starring a new action hero in Yaxi Liu. Liu is pretty awesome both in fights and emotional moments, making this film a notch above others. Can't wait to see her future in the genre.

THE WRECKING CREW hails from Ángel Manuel Soto, who gives us another really solid flick. Momoa and Bautista give us brotherly love, and Jacob Batalon is hilarious, but a criminal use of Frankie Adams. She is one big badass woman, USE HER ACTION MOVIES.

THE SHADOW'S EDGE is a Jackie Chan banger from 2025. Dude must be in his 70s and can still go with a good script. That's what set this apart from other films, a script that makes likable protagonists and antagonists. Zhang Zifeng shows out too with the action.

THE RIP is Netflix slop that's typical slop. A script that overwrites everything possible with action at the end that makes it "entertaining." Competently made laziness with a star cast that simply wanted money and to hangout together. Nothing special nor exciting.

PREDATOR: BADLANDS is Dan Trachtenberg doing what he seemingly does best... making awesome Predator films. Dek is more human than not, just like Elle Fanning's Thia. Bud might be the cutest creature in years. The action was really dope.

NO OTHER CHOICE is another Park Chan-wook banger. It's crazy the amount of incredible films this dude has, and this is another. Would have landed on my top 2025 list if I saw it last year. Lee Byung-hun continues to be an exceptional, hilarious actor.

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is another stunning banger from Big James Cameron. Love how the older I get the more I fall in love with this series. Not as good as the second, but it might be darker? Feels darker. Stephen Lang could be the best character in this series.

28 YEARS LATER is an absurdly gorgeous, incredible film from Danny Boyle. Instantly one of my favorites of 2025 and definitely rejuvenated the series. Has so much heart packed into the Alex Garland script.

FRANKENSTEIN is another Guillermo del Toro masterwork picture. I'm just heavy for that Mexican maestro, and partial to his films. Even with Netflix, this film looks gorgeous as hell and Jacob Elordi just stuns. He's absolutely stunning and brilliant. Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth do their thang.

THE SEVENTH CURSE is amazing. Never seen a film with such horror AND action aplenty like this, and it unequivocally rules. Another Maggie Cheung banger, adding to her astonishing resume to being the Greatest Actress ever. The effects are GNARLY for this one.

THE LOST BUS is a solid enough, entertaining enough feature. I would recommend watching Greengrass's film just for the directing because all that fire and the chaos it brought was very good. Ferrera and McConaughey do serviceable, fine jobs fit for their talents.

WEAPONS is another Zach Cregger banger. Much more enjoyable than his prior feature, Weapons has a thrilling, mysterious, dark energy about it with some really good performances. Gladys is a fucked up lady, lemme tell ya. Shoutout Donna's bust.

CAUGHT STEALING might just prove Darren Aronofsky isn't for me. Neither The Whale nor this. Charlie Huston's script doesn't do well for much, especially Zoë Kravitz's role. Austin Butler, Matt Smith, and Regina King do entertain.

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB is a fantastic, hilarious satire that had some incredible, gut busting moments, especially from George C. Scott and Peter Sellers as Mandrake. Stanley Kubrick did his shit.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is PTA back to being PTA after his weakest film so far to me. This feels important, feels needed, and with stunning directing and acting, it blows the mind. Especially that third act. The highest star here, though, is newbie Chase Infiniti. Remarkable!

HARD EIGHT is PTA's debut feature film and it's very enjoyable. You get a surprising charming lead from Philip Baker Hall as Sydney, John C. Reilly and Gwyneth Paltrow are fucked up, with a good performance from Samuel L. Jackson. PSH pops up too for a great cameo.

LICORICE PIZZA just isn't for me. Probably the weakest PTA that feels aimless for me. The premise of the film, 15 year old and 25 year old fall in love, feels completely off PTA and the running anti-Asian gag in the first half also doesn't feel like him. It's pretty, but that's it.

PHANTOM THREAD is another stellar PTA film, and it might be his best. Or my favorite. I didn't realize the talked about toxicity of the main relationship was from BOTH sides, but Alma's just as bad as he is. A beautiful, twisted love that I can get behind.

THE LIFE OF CHUCK is Mike Flanagan being painfully try-hard deep. It's unfortunate, but watching this film, getting intrigued and loving the first act or "Act Three" and then realizing at the end of that really... it had no purpose was upsetting. Performances GOOD, though.

LOVE UNTANGLED is a supremely good, enjoyable Korean romance film. Shin Eunsoo, who I know from the drama TWINKLING WATERMELON, is assured here as the lead with charm and adorableness bouncing off her. Gong Myung bounces off her well. The Gong Yoo cameo was such a double take.

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is the first, for me, full on masterpiece 5 star beauty from Paul Thomas Anderson. It just hit me gobsmacked and didn't stop. His shot layouts were exquisite, the writing was so good, and Adam Sandler was pretty special. I'm so happy I finally watched this.
