Don't normally do this but felt mine was different enough from those going around. Hopefully it's not all age 😆

Also nice clear example of why nothing but guild-based unions will ever work in the game industry
From the article above As organizers came to realize, a sizable portion of Double Fine’s staff had been “managers” by some definition, at some point. Maybe they only managed one person, or maybe they had been in charge of a project that was eventually finished or canceled. Some were currently in leadership roles on projects that conferred some decision-making power, but had no direct reports. A few people were HR-adjacent, but not officially HR. What’s more, a lot of Double Fine’s most senior staff had moved overseas during the pandemic. While their roles remained unchanged, they were legally classified as contractors, who are legally ineligible for such a union.

like, welcome to a job? wth. Interesting story tho: kotaku.com/inside-the-f...
Quote from article with second half highlighted
I was also told by many that Schafer’s opinion carried great weight at Double Fine not just as a boss, but as a publicly-visible, well-liked social leader of a very tight-knit studio, a beloved colleague who often played board games and hung out outside of work with his reports. Over and over, I heard people express fear that their ability to succeed or fail at Double Fine was intrinsically linked with not just how Schafer felt about them personally, but by extension how senior members of the studio who were themselves close with Schafer felt about them

Correction, androids have moved into the neighborhood
Close up of an npc with the texture bug from the previous skeet, revealed a grey grid texture making them over just their face and nott eyes nose eyes, making them look like some sorr of android

Texture problem? Or neighbors not so sneakily planning a heist?
NPCs from the cozy city sim Neighborhoods sitting at an outdoor cafe at different tables. Tables in the game's diorama style are made up of twisted champagne toppers with cocktail umbrellas as patio umbrellas. Two NPCs have grey faces with normal flesh tone eyes popping out, making it look like they're wearing ski masks.

So in Neighborhoods we have funny business names, because why not. My wife actually suggested this one, & everybody that see its laughs. But this got banned on TikTok because it "violated community guidelines"...

While I was confident the game would find an audience, I am pleasantly surprised in finding more fellow bollard sickos on Steam:
Steam forum comment screenshot reads:

Bollards

This game needs bollards. Also stanchions, flexi-posts, and other ways to cordon off areas. But especially bollards, including permanent bollards, retractable bollards, and automatic hydraulic bollards.

This would add modal filters to the game so that only lightweight traffic can filter through and cars would be blocked off.

But, bollards in particular would also serve a defensive function and prevent out-of-control motorists from ploughing through pedestrians. And particularly chonky bollards can serve double-duty as scupltures, benches, bike racks, or tables.

Imagine a one-lot parklet surrounded by chess tables. But the chess tables are actually bollards. And then you have an event where the residents run a Christmas market in that park, and a deranged motorist tries to rip through them. Boom, smash, the motorist is reduced to a smear of plastiline while the cute clay people in the market blissfully go about their holiday business.

If you're wanting to read just one article/interview on Xbox and/or Gen AI in games, this is the one. Lot's of great snippets but this is my favorite: gamesbeat.com/what-an-xbox...
Blackley: Games follow a cycle similar to winemaking or beer brewing. There’s an addictive side to it that takes over. Sometimes, the alcoholic nature of these things is more important to the business than the artisanal side. You see the importance of microbrew beer wax and wane. The pretension of winemaking waxes and wanes. It’s the same thing.

With winemakin,g the intention is to let the grape reach its maximum potential. That’s the job. When you do that you’ll have a superior product. Then you do that and you make a lot of money, business guys move in and want more of it. Then you lessen the quality of the product. The audience gets a little sick of it. Some people start to drink other stuff because it gets them drunk faster. Then the bottom falls out and it’s out of favor for a while to allow the grape to reach its potential. The business is about something else. After that cycle consumers get sick of that and one guy comes out and says, “I’m a winemaker. I’m going to let the grape reach its full potential.” There’s a New York Times article 15 or 20 years later about this great natural wine movement and we’re back to that stage again.

The irony of this clip from this failed genAI game trailer, is that if they had actually used genAI for the text, it would have spelled it correctly:

The notion that you could use the term phD in marketing as a product this is laughable
Posing chat got a riddle with one word wrong (what happens twice a second, once a minute, never in an entire year, where second should be moment, and the answer is the letter m, but chatgpt doesn't understand letters and words so it repeats the "correct" answer.

Curious if anybody has any great examples of design pillars for games? An example would be God of War's Combat, Father/Son, Exploration (those are bulleted out for the team, still kinda generic imo but hey). farm5.staticflickr.com/4860/4607905... blog.playstation.com/2018/12/05/h...

I'm like aha got to bluesky now I feel like I can post more, only the main reason I don't post is really most of my interesting side thoughts are quasi work related and I don't want it to sound like I'm subtweeting work 😆Sp here's our new kitten (Ruffles) helping me work:
