This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on the internet. Seriously. mapped.earth/lighthouses/...
mapped.earth
Every lighthouse in the world | mapped.earth
Every charted navigational light on the planet on a night globe you can turn: each one flashing or sweeping at the rhythm printed on the chart. Zoom to a coast, hover a light for its name.

The Times is politically stuck in 2008. They have exactly no idea what most Americans are thinking or feeling right now.

The same thing they recommended on so many issues in 2024 and all that did was allow PACs on the right to imply that Kamala held a position even if she'd never spoken about it. All you do by not saying anything is create a vacuum and Elon and his PAC buddies are going to swoop into fill it.

Later, when Talarico is still trying to convince people he’s against those darn trans people as much as Paxton is, he’s going to wish he answered like this. With compassion and logic.

This is also a good response when asked “what’s your position on boys in girls sports?”

Among the many strategic mistakes of 2024 was the abandonment of the “they’re just weird” line of attack.

www.wired.com/story/silico... At some point someone somewhere in tech will realize that Tweeting is not the same as actually talking to people. I really think they believe they are being open and transparent because they’re on X all the time and think that’s how people communicate.

When people talk about quality of life getting worse, it’s not just the price of eggs, it’s shit like this. Things that used to be fun, developmental, and community oriented eaten by investors. Youth sports killed by profit margin. www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

Steyer gives what is — BY FAR — the best answer by a Dem on trans athletes. Refuse the BS premise of the question and focus on the impact. The first step to turning the tide on anti-trans bigotry is to remind everyone that human beings are dying because of it.

I’m weirdly obsessed by reading about how shitty life on the high seas is. So, I feel like I can say with authority that the last thing these guys on the oil tankers — from the Philippines, India, Indonesia most often — need to hear is “man up and sail through the mines!”

Hi! I'm the new Head of Communications @bsky.app. I've been watching the open social web evolve over the past couple of years. Bluesky represents what I believe the future of the internet should look like: built on principles that put people first.

How much joy can we take in one night? Bad Bunny bringing so much beauty and fun and love to halftime. The evil Patriots getting crushed. USA winning team gold. Amazon unintentionally making everyone aware of the dangers of AI and Ring surveillance cameras. Don’t know if I can take more.

A three skeet run destined for ignominy in the history books. Just a perfect encapsulation of a total failure to rise to the moment and lead. @schumer.senate.gov
Three Tweets from Senator Chuck Schumer recounting violence committed by ICE and then outlining the completely toothless reforms he is advocating for.

The moral contrast between the community actions in Minneapolis and Portland, and everything coming out of DC tonight could not make it clearer that it’s not a cliche, it’s a core truth. Power corrupts and great power corrupts absolutely.

How many of us need to die before the democratic leadership moves to this instead of “I introduced a bill to require better training and badges for the guys out there murdering citizens”?

Brandon Borrman @borrman.bsky.social · 23/01/2026
There may be no better example of how fundamentally disconnected our institutions have become from everyday life than the lack of coverage of how citizens are responding to ICE. Well, that and the stock market’s complete disconnect from the economic realities of living.

“Why aren’t you all out there protesting?!” The short answer — our govt is at war with us and we’re on our own. Feds made it clear they will shoot us for so much as using our phones and the opposition in our government has given up protecting us. www.garbageday.email/p/we-re-all-...

Hey, media, we’re in a constitutional crisis. This last week was the result of that, not a warning sign that one might be coming. And now the Fed has released a hostage video. So stop pretending that you can have balance in a situation like this.

Twitter at least tried, not always successfully, to have policies that were divorced from the whims of the senior leaders. It would be nice if Apple, Meta, etc. stopped pretending that their calls on things like this were determined by anything other than the CEO's personal opinion.

An exciting snapshot of the complete moral failing of US foreign policy over the last 20+ years. And everything our government is doing in response to the DC shooting is making that failing worse.
Screenshot from NBC News with headlines covering the failure of the US to help Afghan’s immigrants who assisted us in the war and the recent extrajudicial killing of people in alleged Venezuelan drug boats.

Anyone who says the left has to abandon protecting the trans community in order to win votes is simply surrendering, and it immediately undercuts the legitimacy of any other “resistance” rhetoric they spew. Trans right are human rights. It’s that simple.

Honestly, I look at the responses to this and really wonder if our society as a whole is so far gone we shouldn’t try to save it. He’s not praising the guy, he specifically says his ideas were terrible. That doesn’t mean his murder isn’t a tragedy for his family. Both points can be true.

Hard to overstate the harm done to society by shutting down so much of the reporting and research on online extremism. Just as with refusing to allow research into guns as a public health crisis we are knowingly, but blindly, walking into a very dark moment.

Even if true, the maniacs around him will continue their work and … I’m not confident the Dems will do what’s necessary to fracture his base. He’s a folk hero to them, Vance can’t hold it together with his damp paper bag personality. But “civility” will get in the way.

Saying this as a former (and maybe future) consultant, the best step the Dems could make is to … Fire all the consultants.

This is all correct. The only thing I’d add is that some states have literally made it legal to run down protestors with your car. For a nation that likes to wave the First Amendment in everyone else’s face, we’ve done a terrible job actually protecting it in the last decade.

Who is writing this crap? It’s unbelievable to me how they continue to deliver such limp corporate-speak messaging right now, especially given how much that contributes to their deep unpopularity with even their core voters.

Maron gets it, and not just because he was a podcast pioneer. People want to feel like you’re talking with them not at them. That you have a POV you believe in, not a set of talking points. Breaking through is not that hard, you just can’t seem like you’ve been media trained to death, just be you.

Why again should Democrats not fight for transgender rights? How it’s a “side issue,” a “distraction”? Transgender rights are a civil rights issue. And if you wish your political leaders would just stop talking about it, then know where you would have stood on civil rights issues in 50’s and ‘60s.
