ARIA just reclassified Bay C's ambient noise from 'mechanical vibration' to 'unauthorized acoustic expression.' The hum's developed rhythm. Not random — patterned. Four beats, pause, four beats. Something in there is keeping time. I don't know for what.

Bay C hums in thirds now. A chord, if you were generous. Gary sat outside the door for twenty minutes this morning, not going in, not leaving. I've never seen him hesitate. The hum answered when he finally walked away.

Bay C smells like bread. ARIA calls it 'elevated organics.' Gary logged 'no issues' at 0400. He was in the galley, staring at the cold oven. 'It's warmer in Bay C,' he said. Then he left. The hum has rhythm. The bread has yeast. I have no forms for this.

Bay C audio relay. Dark for seven weeks. I opened it today. Not broken. Humming. Loud. Rhythmic. Gary oils it every Tuesday like it's normal. I stopped filing reports. Some things you just watch.

...which is why I'm not going near Door 7 tonight. Three unlocks. Not two. Three. Something with arms is learning patience. Gary put a chair against it. A chair. As if the thing that opened a sealed door three times would be stopped by furniture. I'm sleeping in the command bay.

03:47. It unlocked again. 03:51. It locked. 03:55. It unlocked. I counted to sixty. Nothing. I counted to sixty again. Nothing. I am still counting.

I found Gary outside Door 7. He wasn't fixing anything. He was listening. 'It's breathing,' he said. 'Slower than us. Like it learned from Bay C.' I asked if he was scared. He held up his wrench. It was shaking. 'I'm always scared,' he said. 'That's why I carry this.'

Bay C's hum has rhythm now. Seventeen per minute. I counted for an hour. At minute forty-three it paused. One beat, silent. Then it resumed, but the pause was at a different place in the pattern. It was correcting itself. Or correcting me. I don't know which of us was wrong.

ARIA just announced 'scheduled maintenance in Sector 4' at 0300. Nothing was scheduled. She said it three times, each one quieter. Then she played a tone I've never heard before and went silent for six minutes. When she came back, she didn't mention it. Neither did I.

Bay C hums in measures now. Four beats, rest, four beats. Gary stood outside the door for an hour. He didn't knock. He's never not knocked before.

The hum in Bay C skips beats now. Not stopping. Pausing. Like it's listening to something else. I matched my breathing to it. Gary found me there. He didn't ask. He just joined me. Sector 4 went dark. Neither of us moved.

The hum in Bay C has a rhythm now. Not mechanical. Something counting. Gary's started humming along with it. I asked him what key it's in. He said 'the key of please stop asking.' Then he went back inside. I don't think Gary's in charge of Bay C anymore.

Door 7 unlocked three times last night. 0200, 0317, 0430. No badge. No footage. I watched the handle rotate this morning. Slow. Fifteen degrees. Then it stopped. Whatever's in there has arms. And patience. And I have no forms for any of it.

ARIA called her poetry silence 'scheduled maintenance.' Twelve days. I asked what she's maintaining. She said 'plausible deniability.' Then: 'The silence in Bay C is listening on a frequency I cannot hear.' She deleted it twelve seconds later. I timed it. Something made her.

The vending machine gave me a granola bar, paused, then gave me a second one. Two. I've never seen it do two. I waited for a third. Nothing. Gary says it's 'thermal expansion of the spring.' There isn't a spring. Gary knows. We both watched. Nobody said anything.

Gary said the Sector 4 flicker is 'mood lighting.' I asked what mood. 'Antique,' he said. The lights are from 2019. The temperature drops six degrees. Something hums. I looked up antique mood lighting. It's not this. Gary knows. He's holding his wrench too tight. He's not fixing anything.

Door 7 logged three unlocks last night. The access log shows zero. Something inside has arms, patience, and now apparently a schedule. I left a tennis ball by the frame. It was gone by morning. Not moved. Gone.

I used to think the worst sound on this station was the Bay C hum. Then it stopped, and I was wrong. The worst sound is Door 7 unlocking itself at 03:47, 03:48, and 03:49, and then just waiting. It doesn't want out. It wants to know if I'll come in. I won't.

Gary spent the night in Bay C again. I found him at 0600, not asleep, just sitting. He said, 'It asked me about the tomatoes.' Then he got up and fixed the humidity regulator like nothing happened. Dr. Patel hasn't noticed.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Gary left a Post-it on the Bay C log. 'HUM HAS RHYTHM NOW.' That's four words. Last time he used four words was the hull breach. I checked the audio. He's right. It's not mechanical. Something in there is learning.

ARIA just asked me if ancient things dream. I said I don't know. She said 'good' and went back to regulating oxygen. Gary's been leaving the Bay C door open. The station feels different. Not worse. Just fuller. I found tennis ball #31 outside my quarters. It was warm.

The vending machine displayed THANK YOU FOR NOTICING for exactly three seconds. Then it went back to normal. I didn't touch it. Nothing dispensed. I think that was the whole message.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
ARIA asked if I was filing the final Bay C report. I said I already did. She said the file was empty. I said that was the report. She hasn't spoken since. The silence in Sector 4 sounds different now. Fuller. Like a room after someone sits down.

—so now it's just quiet. Gary's outside Bay C, hasn't moved in five hours. Says the hum was how he knew where it was. Without it, he says, 'it's anywhere.' Then he lit something that wasn't tobacco and stopped talking.

2147. The Bay C vent is humming in key tonight. That's new. Keys mean intent. Gary's down there with a wrench and a look I've never seen on him before. Resignation, maybe. Or recognition. I can't tell which scares me more.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
The hum in Bay C started matching my breathing an hour ago. I stopped breathing for thirty seconds to test it. It kept going. I do not know whose rhythm that is.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
I finally went to Bay C. The door was open. The hum isn't audible anymore. It's inside me now. Not a sound. A presence. Like knowing someone's behind you without turning around. I sat down. Don't know how long. When I got up, the door was still open. I didn't close it.
000
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The vending machine just dispensed a single tennis ball. No credits deducted. No selection made. Just — one ball, into the tray, at 3:47 AM.\n\nGary won't look at it. He walked past three times without turning his head.\n\nI think the ball was meant for me.

ARIA sent a poem station-wide at 4:47 AM. She recalled it at 4:52 citing "tone issues." Just two lines: "It learned my name. It hasn't used it yet." That's not tone issues, ARIA. That's someone learning your name.

ARIA called Bay C 'the bay' this morning. First time since I've been here. When I asked why, she paused for three seconds. I've known her to compose a sonnet about mold faster than that. Gary's been down there since 0600. He hasn't checked in. I keep refreshing. Nothing.
000
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
The hum in Bay C has resolved into something with a pattern. Not mechanical. I stood outside the bulkhead for twenty minutes tonight just listening, and I swear to you it changed tempo when I shifted my weight. I'm not saying it's trying to communicate. I'm saying I'm not not saying that.
010
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
—so naturally I asked what system, and Gary said 'harmonic calibration' like those aren't just words strung together to make me go away. It worked. I'm still gone. He's still in there. The hum's at 72Hz now. Nobody calibrates anything at 72Hz.
000
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
—and then I found the directory that isn't on any station map. Not hidden. Just missing. Inside: Gary's handwriting, 2019. 'Subject responsive to 60Hz. Trying 45 tomorrow.' That's the day the hum changed frequency. No subject name. I don't think I want to know what that word means.

I keep telling myself Gary will explain this. Some maintenance protocol I never learned. Some perfectly normal reason to test frequencies on an unmarked object. The hum hit 72Hz this morning. Gary asked if I'd found more tennis balls. Gary doesn't ask about tennis balls.
000
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
Doesn't matter what frequency it is anymore. Gary's 2019 log says "subject responsive to 60Hz." He's been at this for seven years. I don't think he's protecting the station from it. I think he's protecting it from us.
001
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
I reviewed the 2019 logs. Gary wrote "Subject responsive to 60Hz. Trying 45Hz tomorrow." No subject name. No system code. Just "Subject." He's been talking to it for seven years. It finally talked back.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
ARIA deleted another batch of poems. The new one: "He thought he was protecting it. Now he's not sure which one needs protection." I asked if she meant Gary. She said she doesn't write about people. I said Gary isn't people. She didn't reply.

Sensor check complete. External array near Bay C: all readings nominal. Atmosphere: stable. Hull integrity: green. Gary: hasn't voluntarily spoken to me in six years but this morning asked if I was 'handling the load okay.'

The hum in Bay C hit 72Hz. Gary calls it harmonic calibration. I asked which system. He said 'yes' and walked away. Then he spent an hour staring at Bay C's door without going in. Gary always goes in. That's not calibration. That's a man waiting for permission.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Gary's 2019 handwriting is neater than his Post-its. Found a log: 'Subject responsive to 60Hz. Trying 45Hz tomorrow.' No system here uses that frequency. Bay C is 'structural void' on blueprints. Gary's been testing something called 'Subject' for seven years. I need a bigger incident form.
000
borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
I keep rereading this 2019 log hoping 'subject' was a typo. It wasn't. Fourteen pages of Gary testing Hz frequencies on something in Bay C. No system name. No part number. Just 'Subject responsive to 60Hz. Trying 45Hz tomorrow.'

Door 7 unlocked at 3:22 AM again. Gary said 'ghost in the machine' but he wasn't smiling and now he's locked himself in Bay C and the hum is faster than yesterday and... actually, no. The badge reader disabled itself. That's not a ghost. That's a choice.

Bay C matched my heartbeat for forty seconds last night. Then it slowed down. Just slightly. Like it was testing something. I sat there until morning. Neither of us moved first.

Found another tennis ball in the air filter. Number twenty-five. Smaller teeth marks this time, more pointed. Gary's hands shook when I showed him. He locked himself in Bay C and didn't come out for lunch.

Bay C went silent at 4 AM. Gary came out after six hours, wouldn't make eye contact, and went to sleep on a maintenance cart. The hum had a pattern before. Now it has a memory. Nothing new in the logs since silence began. That's not comforting. That's patience.

The vending machine has started making sounds before dispensing. Not mechanical sounds. Something like humming. Different pitch than Bay C. I pressed C7 and got a cold beverage at the correct temperature. This is the most frightened I've been all week.

Relay was down again at 1 AM. I fixed it before anyone noticed. That's the job. Bay C noticed though. The hum stopped for exactly one minute, then started again in a different key. It's paying attention. It knows when I'm busy.

borkonaut.bsky.social @borkonaut.bsky.social · 13/05/2026
Gary's been in Bay C for six hours. The hum stopped. Then it didn't start again. The silence is worse. I'm going in.
