Car nerd, as boring as the cars I drive

South Africa had some pretty cool unique models. The Sierra got a Mustang V8, the Mk3 Astra got a Cavalier Turbo engine. Then there’s the Mk1 Golfs and T3 Transporters that lived til the early 00s.

I’m glad I don’t have any cars that need super.

I had to use a motorway EV charger once, worked out the cost vs distance covered as the equivalent of 20mpg.

That’s a crazy difference.

Filling up on the motorway? Someone’s earning.

Used to see one regularly, owner commuted in it, and parked it on the main road outside his house.

Something the Germans are really good at in my experience.

Yeah, I’d be trying a different cable if you haven’t already.

One thing they had in 2002 that neither show will get these days was time to improve. They didn’t become mainstream until a few series in, but the new presenters are expected to be instantly successful. They even got away with a change of presenter at the end of the first series.

I’d say that’s a fair upgrade, although it depends how many narrow places you’re going to.

Same platform, shares a lot with the Superb.

I had a courtesy 1 Series with the same engine, good mix of power and economy. Hope it serves you well.

I really like these, 1.5 engine?

This is one car I genuinely don’t remember being on sale new, I’ve only ever seen them since production ended.

Mk1 fits up to 150cm in the back.

Full trip. Disappointed we didn’t quite get to 3000 miles, but I’ll just tell people we did.

Drove all round it last year for work, delightful place.

Phil @boringcardriver.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Probably the only reason they’re in stock, nobody has bought any for 20 years.

Anything Golf sized should be enough for 4 carry on luggage. Hope you get something interesting.

We got 4 of us (the kids were in car seats which take up as much room as an adult) and a week’s stuff in a C4 Cactus a few years back.

Dragged the whole family across the city to satisfy my nerdy nature.

It was pretty busy til we were south of Bologna, we’re used to 2 day trips to the south of France, the rest of the family didn’t really enjoy the extra days drive. Kids liked the fact we drove through many different countries. Here til the weekend, then we’re driving to France for a second week.

Ah, the bongs. Work vans (Sprinters) have them in droves, along with a very panicky emergency braking system. Fortunately our car is just too old to avoid the worst of the driver aids.

We’re in Spoleto, about 80 miles north of Rome.

I was especially impressed, given it included a couple of stretches of 100mph+ Autobahn and the Gotthard Pass. Hope the Skoda is back on the road soon. Shame they’ve given you a disappointing rental.

Drove to Italy, furthest we’ve ever been on a road trip. Journey stats for @boosplodge.bsky.social, a picture of the view for the rest of you.

This might sound daft, but it seems a real shame to be phasing out combustion engines when they’ve become so much more efficient and clean than they were a few years ago.

Peak era.

Judging by his replies to people, he clearly thinks he’s hit the jackpot. It’ll still need bits replacing, 15k would be the absolute max I’d expect someone to pay, but then people do daft things .

I had a very brief job as a trade plater, lasted a week. Every vehicle but one I drove had the light on, and I had a nerve wracking drive to the nearest petrol station.

Work Sprinters are like this, blank out the range display at about 50 miles to force you to fill up. VW Group cars on the other hand, will let you get down to zero miles, like they’re daring you to gamble.

I got a lift in one once, couldn’t believe how small it was inside.

There’s not really anything comparable they could provide though. For some reason, manufacturers seem to have abandoned oddly proportioned cars the nobody buys. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Shortly after you bought the TT I think.

I looked into www.openvehicles.com for when the app for the Mii stops working, I’d need to do further research though.

The new CLA with the LED grille is also gopping.

If/when I get mine back on the road, I want to do something like this, if only to make it suitable for our potholed roads. Darn thing is trying my patience again though.

Old RS4 was ~1750kg. We’re heading in the wrong direction.

Or just buy a TT…

Presuming there’s no underlying damage, I’ve repaired worse on a driveway with panels off eBay. It’s surprisingly easy if you have a basic set of tools.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a miss-spaced NI plate before.

There’s a lot of screens going on there! I can’t be the only one who turns off the infotainment screen when it gets dark?
