Never mind that attributing capabilities specifically to general intelligence is difficult. Never mind that intelligence is difficult to define. Never mind that benchmarks don’t measure what we think they measure. Just trust the authors’ inference to the ‘best’ explanation.

Since releasing our recent position paper against treating #AGI as a north-star goal, I’ve often been asked about what expectations policymakers should have instead. My personal opinion: expect many future forms of AI having many surprising impacts across many contexts.
