The real crisis was never migration. It was a response that normalised violence, stripped away rights, and treated people seeking safety as threats. And none of us are safer as a result. deathzone.borderforensics.org

The Poland-Belarus border did not become a “death zone” by accident. A new report shows how political decisions, pushbacks, border infrastructure and militarisation transformed forests and rivers into sites of preventable deaths. www.borderforensics.org/investigatio...

"We then, in collaboration with Sam Chambers, modelled how different border-control interventions and scenarios extend the time migrants spend in these environments, thereby intensifying their exposure to meteorological and topographical harm." www.borderforensics.org/investigatio...

Monthly 1 km downscaled surfaces of minimum duration-limited exposure (DLE, hours, masked to the area of interest, for January 2021 through December 2025. Higher values indicate longer allowable exposure under the assumed clothing and activity conditions, whereas lower values indicate shorter allowable exposure and therefore greater cold stress. Seasonal structure and spatial heterogeneity are evident. Figure 3.36.
Monthly 1 km downscaled surfaces of minimum required clothing insulation (IREQ, clo), masked to the Poland area of interest, for January 2021 through December 2025. Higher values indicate greater clothing insulation required to remain within the modeled cold-strain criterion, whereas lower values indicate lower clothing demand. Seasonal structure and spatial heterogeneity are evident but not identical to DLE.
Modelled cumulative cold exposure and distress-call clusters along the Poland-Belarus border. This map overlays a scenario-based surface of cumulative cold exposure across the borderland with the spatial distribution of documented distress-call clusters. The blue surface represents the modelled intensity of cold exposure under the selected delay scenario, while yellow circles indicate distress-call locations/ clusters. These layers show that exposure is produced not only by environmental conditions, but by the interaction between terrain, bordering infrastructures, and the forced duration of migrants' immobility or rerouting. Figure 4.31. Cold-stress scenarios, documented deaths, and distance to the Belarus border. The maps compare death locations with cumulative cold-exposure contours under successive bordering scenarios. The contour values are used as an exposure index rather than as literal core-body temperature loss. Across scenarios, added delay compresses dangerous exposure thresholds toward the border. The distance-to-border analysis shows that mapped body-recovery locations remain situated within the wider borderland, with a particularly marked 2025 concentration near the legal border and along river-border sections. Table 4.2. The table shows the median distance from the Belarus border at which deaths occurred, along with the number of deaths recorded within 5 km and within 10 km of the border, illustrating how closely fatalities are clustered around the border zone.

The Death Zone: For five years we’ve been told what happened at the Poland-Belarus border was a migration “crisis”. A new investigation reveals a different truth: the catastrophe was created by political choices.

Our research found that the increased numbers of deaths in the Channel took place close to the French shore as a result of new mechanisms: extreme overcrowding and chaotic launches. We linked these trends to increased border policing, aerial surveillance, and supply chain disruption.

From 2019 to 2023, there were 68 dead and missing from 21 fatal incidents in the Channel. Between August 2023 and January 2026, 129 people died or went missing in 48 incidents. At the same time the numbers of boats and people crossing fell. See @hollybancroft.bsky.social's article here 👉

Alongside unveiling patterns, the Archive of Absence stands as a witness. Many records lack important details. Some deaths go complete unrecorded. The AoA allows to submit information to help acknowledge and collectively honor the memory of those who lost their lives at the hands of the police.

So, did racism kill Nzoy? Our evidence points to a systemic pattern where race, masculinity, and various forms of othering shape who is policed, how, and with what consequences. Our research also shows that especially racialised men are overwhelmingly overexposed to lethal policing.

Border Forensics Agency @borderforensics.bsky.social · 30/10/2025
A racialised geography of violence emerges: over the last 10 years, the Canton of Vaud had been the deadliest in CH – both in absolute terms and relative to population and police size. Who died? 67% of cases show one marker of othering; 28% show multiple. Over 45% were racialised. We see a pattern.

In the past three decades, shootings went down, yet police-related deaths have remained steady. Our platform documents 84 people killed in police interactions from 1992–2025: more than two per year. We include deaths from shootings, restraint, neglect or abuse in custody as well as police chases.

Border Forensics Agency @borderforensics.bsky.social · 30/10/2025
Silence surrounds these deaths. Officially released numbers mostly cover deaths through police fire arms while fatalities from restraint, custody, or neglect are obscured by euphemisms. This invisibility conceals violent patterns of police practices and thus the causes of reproduced violence.

The result of our analysis challenges the prosecutor’s claim that Nzoy ran at the officer with a knife. His hands were open and empty when he was first shot. This exposes bias in official narratives of lethal policing and support the demand for #justice4nzoy. borderforensics.org/investigations/nzoy

The frame-by-frame motion shows his left hand outstretched across his body and his right hand with visible finger articulation. Both moved naturally as open palms. This is bio-mechanically inconsistent with gripping a knife.

By cross-referencing a #3D model of the scene with the camera’s perspective and optics, we measured the distance to Nzoy’s hands. The pixel data gave us a precise dimensions: 19.7 cm. Our results matched Nzoy's autopsy records.

From four extracted frames, we studied the size, shape, and motion of #Nzoy’s hands – open vs closed. The police investigation ignored this sequence, despite the witness who filmed it testifying that Nzoy held nothing.

Our analysis further locates Nzoy's killing in relation to other police-related deaths in Switzerland. Our video analysis combined with 3D-reconstruction demonstrate that Nzoy's hands were open just before the first two shots were fired at him. Contrary to the police's claims, it was thus highly unlikely that he was holding a knife at that moment.
