If countries that don’t have capital punishment are weak on crime as the author suggests, it is also true these same countries have much lower rates of violent crime than the United States.

This is the reason Canada, in the long run, will win this trade skirmish. The Canadian government and the Canadian people have a far higher level of motivation than the American administration at this moment. It is an existential matter.

The article attempts to spin Trump positively when it is him alone that is responsible for the ambiguity around NATO alliance commitments.

True, but there are many other ways that AI will supercharge inequities, most notably concentrating an even greater share of the economy in the hands of a few and reducing competition.

If you emptied every Canadian city of its adult population and sent them to ‘the bush’, you’d only have five people to ‘manage’ one square kilometer of boreal forest. This forest management thing could take a while…

This in my mind is exactly the end game with AI. It is about centralizing and gatekeeping large parts of the economy in the hands of a few. People will be conditioned to accept shitty AI law and shitty AI accounting long before AI is adequately up to task.

WTF is it with “kinetic” strike? It’s just a “strike”. It was a word-salad effort from the very beginning to provide nuance to something entirely without nuance.

If you remove energy from U.S.- Canada trade, the U.S. runs a massive trade surplus with Canada running $45B to $60B a year. It is in fact the United States of America that is sucking off of the Canadian economy.

If a sitting President is immune from prosecution according to the Department of Justice, would it not make sense that the President of the United States should be likewise precluded from initiating civil proceedings while in office?

Red herring. The rich don’t pay income tax. Jeff Bezos certainly doesn’t. “The rich” they are talking about are upper-middle class wage earners who do in fact pay higher rates of income tax.

Countries with MAID (medical assistance in dying - you can call it euthanasia if you like) generally have significant public support for the policy. This is true in both the Netherlands and Canada where it is seen largely as an issue of personal choice.

In a similar vein, it begs the question, what important areas of the economy face under-investment and what opportunities have been lost when all the big money floods into AI? Capital is finite.

Copyright as a construct has a purpose, namely to incentivize work, creativity, and innovation. By your logic, a person commissioning an artist could have a valid claim to copyright. There is no need to, and no upside in extending copyright to AI generated work (AI trained on copyrighted work).

Canadians at the median are wealthier than their American counterparts. MAID provides dignity and individual choice over one of the most fundamental questions in life and is broadly supported by a large majority of Canadians. Canada is rising in global reputation while the U.S. is a laughingstock.

Why is it that Americans get such an embarrassing hard-on for military force? I think it is because individual people who are powerless, relatively unimportant and quite stupid to be frank suddenly feel powerful and important. Can’t fix stupid though…
