You and I have very different experiences with people using that term

I.e. the training embedded a somewhat lossy calculator into the model itself that allows it to perform novel (to it) calculations.

I don't think that's the distinction. The rebuttal against "stochastic parrot" here isn't that the model understands anything, it's that it's not just "parroting" an answer in its training data, it's producing correct answers to questions it wasn't trained on.

"symbol manipulation with very complex heuristics" is a simplistic but completely accurate description of a Turing machine

It also doesn't mean that the monthly costs have gone down when interest rates have been skyrocketing like this.

I don't think they've cracked it, I do think it's crackable and they will eventually.

The vast majority of paths from here to that world run through a scenario where the models are sabotaged to serve up propaganda at scale (we can see Musk slowly working through this with Grok)

This touches on my personal pet hypothesis. I think we hit an inflection point during the low-rate triggered housing price boom of 2021/2022 where rising home prices went from a thing most people liked (my house is worth more!) to a thing most people disliked (I can't afford to move!)

I would be curious to see how the "playing cards" number would change if you expanded it to include videogames (with people you actually know)

Reminds me of Bayaz from the First Law series. Ancient wizard powerful beyond comprehension whose entire life is waging a subtle war spanning centuries and empires against his peers and yet the most common reason for his failures is his own inability to let go of petty grievances and prejudices

Anyone remember the multiple shows where families swapped moms and one of the moms was always borderline abusive?

In that it rolled back protections in a blue area yes, but it's worth noting the subheader of that article is: "The three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals consisted exclusively of Donald Trump appointees."

I can see how this impression formed, 2010-2022 were all base turnout game elections, but Trump's 2024 victory is best explained by him getting swing voters (both between voting/not voting AND between parties) to swing his way, as is the GOP poll cratering since then.

It took way longer than I hoped but at the start of Trump 1 I observed that the newcomers he brought into politics were engaging it like a tv show fandom, and even the biggest pop culture hits (I cited GOT at the time) can't sustain passion indefinitely. Shows get repetitive, audiences gets bored.

Because inequality is bad on its own merits independent of whether real income/wealth is going up overall

I was with you through most of this but this seems completely backwards. Emily's terms seem agnostic to any of the philosophical conclusions about whether LLMs think or reason (or what those mean in context), whereas your favored terminology all assumes the premise that they do.

According to SCOTUS it's only an illegal bribe if you get paid *before* you do the corruption (like, 40% kidding)

Man I thought Dijkstra cut the Gordian knot of this discourse over 40 years ago: "The question of whether a computer can think is no more interesting than the question of whether a submarine can swim."

On the app once you've entered batch select mode you can no longer see anything but the thumbnails so if you took a bunch of similar pics but only want to add specific ones to an album you need to simply memorize their exact placements among the set

Some of this has to be the gap between what's promised and what's delivered, right? Like I wasn't around to hear what Carter was promising, but Trump promised significant DEflation (as stupid and bad as that would actually be) and is delivering moderate-by-recent-standards inflation.

We are so incredibly lucky that oai and ms just basically put in writing "fair use is real and we aren't doing it" because I was certain we were facing a lose/lose where either oai and ms would win or the plaintiffs would win by gutting fair use

Eliminating predatory leveraged buyouts by forcing the *actual* borrowers to be liable for their own debt. That one change would've completely kneecapped our vulture PE economy!

Just to be clear, your position is that the only thing standing between the IRA's actual reception and a huge public celebration of the IRA as a climate win from voters saying climate is their top priority was people assuming and then learning that Biden planned to run again?
030
Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
The outpouring of public, performative apathy to the IRA's climate provisions started way before he confirmed he was running again and I don't remember it being, "it doesn't matter because Trump is going to win again and undo it anyways"

Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
See the problems you face are that self righteousness doesn't actually remove carbon from the atmosphere and your total lack of theory of mind means you've adopted a message to electeds which can only be received as "there is only downside to taking action on climate"
100
Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
It was the largest climate bill in world history. If your message as a voter is "either do 9x bigger than the biggest effort in history next time or don't even bother trying" the rational political response is to not even bother trying.
100
Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
And what does it accomplish to show politicians that they'll be pilloried for taking action on climate by the people who profess to care the most?

Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
It was, at absolute worst, two steps forward and one step back. The energy efficiency tax credits were massive.

Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
This is how people talk about Dems after the Biden administration spent immense time, effort, and political capital to pass that largest climate bill in world history. What lesson do you think politicians are learning from that?

If it exists at all I'd put dollars to donuts it's comparing the mental health of people who never had dysphoria against the mental health of people who received GAC. Every study shows trans people who are allowed to receive GAC have better MH outcomes than those who aren't.

I'm not sure it's *that* novel, I constantly find myself thinking of the old Dijkstra quote, "asking if a computer can think is like asking if a submarine can swim"

My pipe-dream admissions reform is that colleges set some standard (doesn't need to be purely score-based, just as consistent as possible) and then everyone who meets that standard is entered into a lottery for acceptance.

That's the number of people. I was giving the number of housing units.
030
Ohai @bop.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
You know what's amazing is that you've jumped ass backwards into agreement with the consensus that CA has a housing shortage of millions of units, because there *should* be ~20m units in CA but there are only 14,877,017 according to the US Census Bureau
