Before Central Park is a history book that hits like a jolt. Edwards resurrects Seneca Village with clarity and quiet fury — a Black community building stability in a city that chose to erase it. #book #booklover #bookworm #books #bookish
A book titled Before Central Park: The Lost Story of Seneca Village by James G. Edwards II rests upright. The cover is split between two scenes: the top shows modern Central Park with tall New York skyscrapers rising behind green trees; the bottom depicts a 19th‑century village with people walking along a dirt road lined with wooden houses and churches. The subtitle explains that Seneca Village was a Black property‑owning community erased to build the park.

Industrial Manchester at full throttle — smoke, grit, and the quiet desperation Gaskell threads through Mary Barton. A novel that still feels raw: class tension, heartbreak, and the human cost of survival pressed into every page. Stark, honest, unforgettable #book #booklover #bookworm #books
Cover of Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell (Wordsworth Classics). The illustration shows a 19th‑century industrial city with tall factory buildings, chimneys pouring smoke into the sky, and horse‑drawn carriages moving along a busy street. The scene conveys the harsh, smoky atmosphere of Victorian Manchester.

The Italian Chapel is a quietly powerful read — a WWII love story built not on drama but on stolen moments, moral tension, and the fragile hope carved into a chapel made from scrap. Paris turns a small corner of history into something tender, atmospheric, and deeply human #book #booklover #bookworm
A weathered stone chapel stands in a rugged mountain landscape under a cloudy, muted sky. Its bell tower, topped with a simple cross, rises above broken walls and missing roof sections, giving the building a ruined, timeworn appearance. In front of this scene sits the book cover for The Italian Chapel by Philip Paris, featuring a brightly illustrated white chapel beneath a colourful night sky and two silhouetted figures standing together

Mary Costello’s Academy Street is a quiet gut‑punch — a whole life rendered in spare, luminous prose. Tess Lohan moves like a whisper through the world, yet every page lands with the weight of a heartbeat. Small moments, huge ache. A beautiful, devastating little novel #book #booklover #bookworm
A smartphone lies on a wooden table, its screen showing the audiobook Academy Street by Mary Costello playing. Around it are a cup of coffee, a pair of glasses, a small stack of books, wireless earbuds in an open case, and a notebook with a pen, creating a cosy reading‑and‑listening setup

Ann Patchett’s Whistler is a quiet, star‑lit ache of a novel — tender, atmospheric, and full of the kind of silences that say more than dialogue ever could. A slow, luminous meditation on love, memory, and the spaces between people #book #booklover #bookworm #books #bookish
Book cover of “Whistler” by Ann Patchett. The artwork shows a saddled horse standing alone in a grassy field under a deep blue night sky filled with stars. The scene feels calm and slightly mysterious. The title “Whistler” appears at the top, with a quote from the Sunday Times above the author’s name at the bottom

The Hound of the Baskervilles is Doyle at his moodiest: fog‑drenched moors, a family curse, and a hound that may or may not be real. Watson takes centre stage, Holmes lurks in the shadows, and the tension never lets up. A gothic detective classic that still bites. #book #booklover #bookworm #books
A black‑background book cover for The Hound of the Baskervilles featuring a cream silhouette of Sherlock Holmes with a pipe at the top, a stylised teal hound with glowing red eyes in the centre, and a small lone tree near the bottom. The title and author, Arthur Conan Doyle, appear in bold cream lettering, giving the design a moody, gothic

Cassie Steward’s number thirty‑two is a quiet bruise of a novel—soft on the surface, but every page hides a pulse of unease. A house full of ghosts, a story full of truths people don’t say out loud #book #booklover #bookworm #books #bookish
A small curly‑haired dog sits on a teal cushion in front of a full bookshelf. Beside the dog, a copy of number thirty‑two by Cassie Steward stands upright, its yellow‑door cover bright against the books behind it.

Fabulous bookmail from a book buddy who sent me a fabulous copy of Frankenstein to read while I recover from surgery #book #booklover #bookworm #books #bookish
1. Heart‑and‑flowers Frankenstein cover

A stylised anatomical heart sits at the centre of the cover, wrapped in purple and lavender flowers and gold botanical flourishes. A gold crescent moon hangs above it, and the title “Frankenstein” appears in bold gold lettering across the heart, with “Mary Shelley” below.

---

2. “A Note on the Text” interior page

A printed page headed “A Note on the Text,” topped with a delicate illustration of a flower and branching leaves. The text explains the publication history of Frankenstein, noting its anonymous 1818 release, later editions, and Mary Shelley’s 1831 revision.

---

3. Painted page‑edge design

The closed book’s page edges are painted with a gradient from deep purple to dark green. A yellow crescent moon, stars, and branching lightning‑like lines frame a dark green snake with a purple tongue winding through the centre, with scattered purple leaf motifs

---

4. Quote‑focused Frankenstein cover

A black cover decorated with purple flowers, pale pink petals, and branching motifs. At the top sits a gold crescent moon. Centred text reads: “IF I CANNOT INSPIRE LOVE, I WILL CAUSE FEAR!” Beneath it, “Frankenstein” appears in gold within a rectangular frame.

Medlock by S. G. Hartnell
Medlock is a modern Gothic horror novel that reimagines the classic tropes of haunted estates, buried secrets, and psychological decay through the eyes of a housekeeper in 1978. Set in the eerie confines of Marwood Manor, the story follows Mrs. Medlock, a loyal servant to a fading aristocratic family, as she navigates the crumbling grandeur of the estate and the sinister truths it conceals.

Powerless is my latest audiobook and it’s such an easy listen and so well written #fantasy
“Powerless” is the debut novel by Lauren Roberts and the first installment in The Powerless Trilogy.

Set in the kingdom of Ilya, the story follows Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary—someone without supernatural abilities—who survives by posing as a Psychic to blend in with the magical Elite.

Her precarious existence takes a dramatic turn when she inadvertently saves Prince Kai Azer, the future Enforcer of the realm.

This act propels her into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition designed to showcase the Elites’ powers.

Without any abilities of her own, Paedyn must navigate the deadly challenges of the Trials while concealing her true identity.

As she grows closer to Prince Kai, she grapples with forbidden feelings and the constant threat of exposure.

The novel masterfully intertwines themes of survival, identity, and resistance, set against a backdrop of political intrigue and societal divides.

“Powerless” has been praised for its compelling characters and intricate world-building, making it a standout in the young adult romantasy genre.
