In 1975, 26-year-old teacher Jane Ellen Wakefield disappeared from Iowa City just months after filing for divorce from her husband, John. She never returned home, never contacted loved ones, and was never seen again. Even after an infrmant comes forward with an alarming story of what happened, the case went cold faster than anyone could have expected. Nearly fifty years later, the mystery surrounding Jane’s disappearance remains unsolved. On January 26, 2001, 33-year-old Diane Whipple returned to her apartment building in San Francisconever knowing she was walking into a deadly encounter. In 2012, Cari Farver after blowing up at the man she had been seeing, vanished from Omaha, Nebraska but what followed made no sense. Her family, Dave Kroupa who she had been dating, and a woman named Liz Golyar, who dated the same man, began receiving disturbing, erratic messages from Cari. As the texts escalated into threats and harassment, it was clear that Cari was a stalker, hellbent on destroying lives.  However, as the investigation unfolded, the truth became far more disturbing than anyone imagined. In 1980, two unidentified women were found murdered in California, one in Ventura County and the other in Kern County. For decades, they were known only as Jane Does, their names and stories erased by time. Their killer, Wilson Chouest, was identified years ago, but the identities of his victims remained a mystery. Now, through advances in forensic genealogy and relentless investigative work, both women have finally been identified, restoring their names after more than 40 years. In February 1978, five young men vanished after attending a basketball game in Yuba County, California. Their car was later found abandoned deep in the snowy wilderness of Plumas National Forest far from their route and with no clear explanation why they went there. As searchers uncovered eerie clues, including a remote trailer stocked with untouched supplies, the mystery only deepened. Four of the men were eventually found, but Gary Mathias was never located. On a blisteringly hot day in Phoenix, Arizona, 13-year-old Myron Traylor set out with his mother to do laundry. The 2014 unsolved murder of D’Lisa Kelley has raised serious questions about investigative decisions and accountability. When 17-year-old Corinne Perry disappeared from Creston, Iowa, she seemed to vanish into thin air, leaving behind only an abandoned car and carefully folded clothes. What happens when the danger isn’t on the job, but waiting at home? Robbie Doerr was a veteran firefighter who never imagined the greatest threat would come from someone he trusted.  When Evansville, Indiana, is rocked by the murder of a beloved member of their community, the police have very few clues to go on to find the killer. On a cold night in March of 1976, a young couple was brutally murdered in an apartment in Chicago. The murders were as violent as they were baffling. Who would want to hurt them, and why? At the same time that police were investigating the scene, Gregg Owen was taking the bar exam and would go on to become a prosecutor. 4 years later, Gregg would take the case, determined to put the man guilty of killing the couple behind bars when no one else would. Three years ago, I explored one of California’s most tragic true crime cases: the disappearance and murder of the McStay family, Summer and Joseph McStay, and their two young sons, Gianni and Joey Jr., on February 4, 2010. On August 7, 1972, 16-year-old Jeannette DePalma left her home in Springfield, New Jersey, to go to work, but she never made it back home. Six weeks later, Jeannette's body was found atop Devil's Teeth, a cliff in Houdaille Quarry. In the late 1990s, Italy was worried that Satanism was on the rise. There were whispers of cults and worshippers performing dark rituals to appease the devil and citizens were flocking to their churches worried about their immortal souls and the safety of their loved ones. This fear was not completely unfounded. In the outskirts of Milan, in Busto Arsizio, was a heavy metal band that had taken the idea of Satanic worship and twisted it until their desire to appease Satan turned them into killers. In 1995, 15-year-old Kiplyn Davis disappeared in broad daylight from her high school in Spanish Fork, Utah. Her belongings were abandoned in her locker, and she never made it to her afternoon classes. No one has seen her since. Thirty years later, the mystery of what happened to Kiplyn has endured in a community that refuses to forget her. Join CJ from Rainbow Crimes as she tells the story of the Highs Ice Cream Store Murders.  On April 11, 1967, in Staunton, Virginia, Sisters-in-law Constance Smootz Hevener and Carolyn Hevener Perry were shot and killed while working at the Highs Ice Cream Store. While a prime suspect was arrested, charged, and tried, he was ultimately acquitted, and the mystery of who killed these young women went unsoled for over 4 decades. Finally, after the case had long gone cold, someone came forward with the answer as to who the killer really was.
