I've noticed the same thing. Not sure why though.

Found this lovely @torbooks.bsky.social edition of Wells's The War of the Worlds. The wear and tear at the edges of the cover is part of the design.

Seen it so many times I can watch it in my head. Coincidentally, I just reread Goldman's Adventures in the Screen Trade, with its discussion of the film.

A deliberately misleading blurb, or journalistic incompetence? It's so hard to tell these days.

I mean, just look at this paragraph (about boosters of the auteur theory and the way they wrote about Hitchcock). You gotta know the references to get what he's saying. And Goldman shows us the respect of assuming we do.
What they did in their writings was to elevate him. Let's say he was Ian Fleming before they began. Well, they didn't say he was John le Carre, they made him Graham Greene.

Reconnecting with an old friend. The thing I like most about the book is this: it's written for people with some knowledge of the subject. Goldman drops terms and names (a parenthetical mention of Gore Vidal) with no supplemental explanation, assuming we know what he's talking about. He respects us.

Apparently there are a bunch of websites that reproduce social media posts, then summarize them, and call that an article. That's just lazy.

I love the original Mission: Impossible (1966-73), but oh boy they did a lousy job of hiding their stunt people's faces.

SECOND NATURE by Joyce Carol Oates is "a joy to read," says Booklist. "Compelling, virtually impossible to put down...taut, marvelously twisted...tales of obsession and tragic desire."

Booklist calls the QUARRY series "one perfect book after another" and QUARRY'S REUNION "an entirely appropriate finale to this touching story and to a long, hard life."

Excerpt from an email I received today from a publicist. I've never heard of her, or the publisher, but somehow she knows I've read a horror novel recently.
"Hi david,

I hope your August is wrapping up nicely! Since you've read a horror leaning thriller recently, I'm flagging a debut novel in the same vein that you may love."

Now reading. Irwin Allen bought this and the similarly-themed The Glass Inferno, by Robinson and Scortia, so he could make The Towering Inferno. Stern's first novel, 1958's The Bright Road to Fear, won an Edgar Award.
