October 1 is next week, which means both the rent and your LibraryReads votes are due. Here are a few humble suggestions (for @libraryreads.bsky.social, not for your rent. I can't help you with that).
Book cover for THERE USED TO BE PEOPLE HERE by Kennedy Cole. Dark sky background with silhouette of a treeline, punctuated by a set of headlights and what looks like a falling star or comet or some other space detritus. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "As with the best of sf stories, Cole’s absorbing paranormal thriller uses an otherworldly event to shine a light on very real perils in our society, in this case the insidious poison of prejudice. A truly impressive, deeply moving first outing."Book cover for THE COLD READ by Tara Laskowski. Red letters over a birds'-eye-view image of a white snowy forest with a snow-covered road bisecting it, framed by the frames of a film reel. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Agatha-winner Laskowski’s (The Weekend Retreat, 2023) homage to classic horror tropes, slasher films, and the devoted fandom they cultivate is a sharply written page-turner that readers will be hard-pressed to put down...An absorbing and enjoyable ride."Book cover for THE TRUTH ABOUT ISHA by Namrata Patel. White letters against a purple background featuring a city's skyline with a woman wearing blue pants and a turquois shirt reading pages, as larger pages fly around the cover. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Patel (Your Next Life Is Now, 2025) writes a nuanced and touching story about grief and complicated families, showcasing how loss shapes the trajectories of our lives. Readers will find Alya, in all her messiness and struggles, a unique and sympathetic main character."Book cover for BAD COMPANY by Sara Paretsky. White background, red letters, a silhouetted eagle in flight with an image of a mountain and lakes projected on it in blue. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Utterly thrilling, Bad Company is pure Paretsky, with an intrepid heroine who will let neither age nor the U. S. government get in the way of her making things right."

LibraryReads votes are due Sept. 1st, WHICH IS NEXT WEEK, so here are some helpful suggestions for October. @libraryreads.bsky.social
Book cover for THE TULIP POPLARS by Silas House; an impressionist painting of a green grove of trees with two men chilling in it. Book cover for AS YOU WAKE, BREAK THE SHELL by Becky Chambers; cover depicts two planets, one on top of the other, one is pink, one is green and blue. The Booklist starred review describes it as well-crafted, with textured world building and found-family side characters that often steal the show; "Fans of Chambers’ other cozy sf works will snatch this up, but the book is also recommended for sapphic-sf fans of works like Malka Older’s Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti series or The Stars Too Fondly (2024), by Emily Hamilton."Book cover for PUBLIC ACCESS AFTERWORLD by Jane Schoenbrun; old-school TV screens against a black background; one depicts a smiling face, one a grasping hand, the others are just fuzzy. From starred Booklist review: "Filmmaker Schoenbrun makes their print debut with one of the best novels of the year, a love letter to the history of television, which also depends on that adoration for its existentially terrifying, Lynchian horror...The less readers know about this wildly original take on the haunted media trope the better; all they need is to trust Schoenbrun’s confident hand will guide them through."Book cover for FREEDOM'S DAUGHTERS: HOW A GENERATION OF BLACK WOMEN RESISTED OPPRESSION THROUGH LITERACY AND EDUCATION by Celeste Headlee; a series of colorful book spines against an off-white background, one of which features the face of a woman. From the starred Booklist review: "Freedom’s Daughters shines a much-needed light on the women who put their lives on the line to help others. Headlee’s engaging writing style smoothly incorporates her extensive research, and she also makes connections to today’s political climate. It is a must-read for those looking for stories of Black women’s advocacy and triumph, and of fighting back when obstacles seem insurmountable. Essential for public and academic libraries."

LibraryReads Day! Woo!

Susan Maguire @booklistsusan.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
We're just about halfway through August (ARE YOU SERIOUS), but it's never too early to start thinking about your September LibraryReads @libraryreads.bsky.social picks. Here are a few humble suggestions:
Book cover for MAZYWOOD by Tananarive Due; light blue film reel on a dark blue background; on the film reel sits a cabin in the woods with smoke coming out of the chimney that transforms into the title of the book. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Featuring alternating time frames, immersive world building, brilliant character development, and perfect pacing, this is a creature feature with brains and bite that will chill readers to the bone, and when it finally fades to black, they will give it a standing ovation."Book cover for AVALON, RISE by Madeline ffitch; indigo pressed flowers in the center surrounded by the title and author in ombre orange-to-yellow letters. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "It all adds up to a nuanced portrait of a forgotten town on the brink of change, in which many remember the fighting spirit of their Appalachian forebear, while others are driven by survival mode. Economic realities are harsh, and anger and love are two sides of the same coin. AVALON, RISE is a powerful and beautifully written ode to a region that will resonate with readers far and wide; book groups should take note."Book cover for THE THREE GRACES OF PEARL STREET by Elizabeth Wellington Rollins; still life with a bowl of fruit, grapevine, wine bottle and glass, painting (or a window to a rural scene), cat, daffodil. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Inspired by the Roman story of the Three Graces, this comforting family tale is full of heart and humor. Each character is distinctly drawn, and each point of view highlights the relationships between the women. The wry and sarcastic Graziella, full of life even in her waning years, is the star of the novel. Suggest to readers of SANDWICH (2024) by Catherine Newman."Book cover for THE CASTLE: ADVENTURES IN A WORLD OF UNRAVELING MEN by Jon Ronson; bright yellow background with orange stripes behind it, with a central black-and-white image of a deconstructed fancy man. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Fans of Ronson’s previous work will recognize his candidly brusque style in both sentence construction and reporting style. The Castle is compellingly nuanced in its social analysis as Ronson arrives at outcomes that are both concerning and empathetic."

As we all prepare to head to #ALAAC26, don't forget to prepare for LibraryReads @libraryreads.bsky.social! The August voting deadline is July 1! Here are a few suggestions from moi! (Might could look for galleys in the Exhibit Hall...) (I have no idea if these galleys will actually be there.)
Book cover for HEART OF GLASS by Jennifer Hillier; pink and blue background with the silhouette of a woman with long hair blowing in an unseen wind. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "Hillier delivers another knockout thriller with compulsively readable prose and sly, subtle twists. A must-read."Book cover for PLANT LADY by Minyoung Kang, translated by Shanna Tan; an illustration of a woman in a green apron and yellow boots holding scissors dripping with blood stands on a checked tile floor next to a full plant stand full of plants I can't identify because I know nothing about plants, which should not affect your enjoyment of this book. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "This atmospheric, twisty, and darkly humorous novel has a strong message about men’s abuse of women. Readers of relationship fiction will be cheering for Yoohee and her plants."Book cover for QUEEN MAB by Emily McBride; a close-up painting of a woman's ear which is adorned with a dangling bug-and-light earring and the soft silhouette of another bug. From the starred BOOKLIST review: "McBride’s debut is a sublime, serious depiction of madness and imagination in relation to motherhood. She masterfully pairs haunting epigraphs (Yeats, Keats, Tennyson) with each chapter and dusts the narrative with delicious literary allusions, and her Note on Sources is a bonus for lit lovers."Book cover for NIGHT SONGS by Alli Dyer; a black background with pink letters and white branches adorned with some leaves, pink flowers, and black butterflies. No BOOKLIST review yet (because I still have to write it! But it will be a star and it will be wonderfully quotable, I promise).

Just a few more days to contemplate June picks for LibraryReads @libraryreads.bsky.social...here are a few suggestions with starred reviews in Booklist and which I think are great.
Book cover for ALAN OPTS OUT by Courtney Maum; a white man and woman flank big green letters; the man is walking a lobster on a leash. From the starred Booklist review: "Maum’s writing relies on humor and quick pacing to examine consumption, ambition, and social performance, presenting a study of suburban life that questions the cost of success and perfection."Book cover for THE SHAMPOO EFFECT by Jenny Jackson. A painting of a white woman sitting on a beach chair facing the blue ocean, next to another empty beach chair. From the starred Booklist review: "This astutely observed story is funny and gossipy without veering into the mean-spirited. Hand this to readers who love Emma Straub, Amy Poeppel, and Katherine Heiny."Book cover for PUCK by Samantha Allen; Cartoon drawing of a figure in Elizabethan garb and sunglasses sits on a director's chair with silhouettes of move production scenes in the background against an overall lavendar background. From the starred Booklist review: "This is a superb example of a classics-inspired reimagining; Midsummer devotees will be pleased by the Shakespearean allusions throughout, while Shakespeare haters can enjoy excellent writing without fear of looming iambic pentameter. Allen has masterfully pulled the strings of the romance genre to engineer this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud romance that all can enjoy."Book cover for SUBLIMATION by Isabel J. Kim; a gradiated pink-to-orange background with brown stripes in the middle flanked by repeating images of women walking in opposite directions. From the starred Booklist review: "Award-winning Kim’s debut is a tantalizing novel about immigration, desire, regret, and our struggle to know ourselves...Kim’s ability to track her world building into ancient times and modern politics, the emotional rawness of the characters and their many-faceted flaws and choices, and Soyoung/Rose’s quest to untangle herself from herself, all make for deeply compelling sf.

ALA Prevails in Federal Lawsuit to Preserve IMLS. ALA 150, American Library Association.ALA and our co-plaintiff AFSCME have signed a binding settlement agreement with the federal government, keeping the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) intact. This marks the conclusion of ALA's lawsuit - and victory for library supporters. The settlement follows the dismissal earlier this week of the appeal in a separate, related case. But the fight isn't over."When the administration began shuttering IMLS last year, it set off a chain reaction. Libraries across the country started cutting hours, staff and services people rely on - after school programs, support for jobseekers and connection for older adults. This settlement protects life-changing library services for communities across the country. ALA will continue to defend every American's freedom to read and learn.” - ALA President Sam Helmick
