Hmm. Depends on how you describe dictatorship. Chateaubriand also lived during Louis XVI's reign, the First Empire and the Restauration. None of them were democracies. And why these writers? I'm not sure Giono minded Vichy as much as Paul Eluard. Or Flaubert vs Hugo for the Second Empire..
