For some time now the SteamVR forums are spammed by these posts, like... a handful or two per day, at least. It's suffocating normal posts and pulling down my motivation to keep up with things. You'd think there would be some filters to set to reduce this.

Right. No great success in getting a Steam Controller. I was told just click until it works. I clicked until I got rate limited. And now it's seemingly out of stock, even if shipping is still in 6-10 days. I'm bewildered but also defeated and confused, haha. Oh well.

Got a new Kensington rrackball, not happy with the button mapping so looked into how to customize it. The page for the software has AI-gen + repeated images and garbage formatting. This does not infill me with trust, so hesitant to download and install anything 😬 www.kensington.com/software/ken...

AI is going great. I'm integrating with an API that _generates_ its JSON output. Sometimes it decides to embed the whole output in a Markdown code block, because why not. The solution? Deal with it. Talking to backends can now be non-deterministic which means it needs to be handled like user input.

One of my complaints to Valve regarding soundtracks on Steam is that the vast majority lacks any trailer or preview at all. Then we have the GOAT, Nuclear Throne, that seemingly has their _whole_ OST as the trailer, over an hour, just bonkers bananas! 🤣 store.steampowered.com/app/428400/N...

I keep getting reminded that AI can pretty much replace me already, which doesn't increase morale. Considering this, how are the plans for universal basic income coming along?

Huh. This might have existed for a year, but I can't recall seeing the effective discount in my Steam order history before. This is... neat? I guess it showcases how much money I have saved, or, uh... not wasted on things that end up in my backlog.

I'm passive aggressive when it comes to unsolicited sales calls. I should probably be more direct, it takes effort if they start to pitch though. Me: I'm at the office, I don't have time for this now Them: Right, can we call in a few days? Me: Sure that's fine. End of call. ... Number blocked.

Oh no. Someone asked me a question about Gunheart today, one of my favorite shooters in VR, so I booted it up. Cannot get online, only one server left that doesn't connect, and thus my cloud only save is gone. Going onto Discord to check, their whole server is gone. Site still online: drifter.games

My biggest mistake with my open source projects was naming most of them OpenVR[Suffix]. This as I keep getting questions if they will work straight with the Meta runtime, I expect because most people don't know what OpenVR even is. Live and learn I guess.

I've been addicted to RoadCraft for the last few weeks, I love this game. It has a cockpit camera mode that is so close to a VR experience that I'm begging Saber Interactive to add a VR mode for the cockpit view, the rest of the game could be an overlay screen like in GT7 on the PS5 with PSVR2. 😬🤞

My project Discord server has quite simple rules, which includes: 1. Do not friend mods 2. Do not DM anyone unless prompted to do so 3. Do not tag people, we will read the server anyway I still get a fair amount of people that do _all three_ immediately after joining, I presume to get attention. 🙄

I finally got reminded of something on Reddit, after ten years 😯 This was a prediction by a character, but I don't think I have the energy to figure out if it's true now. I imagine many architectural workflows are internal business secrets, so there would be a lot of inquiries to build a data set 😅

I went and set up a Patreon page, then when adding the first post, I realized it doesn't seem to have support for code blocks. Which makes it almost entirely redundant for my purposes. 🙄 Anyone got any good substitute for Patreon for programmers? I want to post free content with optional support. 🍌

Doesn't Steam mandate that if you sell a game on Steam, it should not be more expensive than elsewhere? If that is the case, it is not applied to soundtracks, even if the content appears to be the same. Maybe I should not buy them on Steam, eh? 🤔 I haven't used Bandcamp much yet, though, but might.

Just installed a PS5+PSVR2, I think I'll have to look for controller boosters, again. I'm a bit concerned with the Frame controllers, more of the same probably.

This is a potential logotype for "BOLL's VR Toolkit" that I'm working on! I still have a full time day job so progress will be slow, but I'm considering setting up a Patreon for development updates, lessons learned and code examples 💭 That should be OK using non-commercial Jetbrains IDEs, right? 🤔

I noticed this icon had appeared on my desktop, apparently the new desktop application name, which I still have installed as I at some point want to play Lone Echo 2. Thing is, I have the notifications on, but have never been notified about any discount from the store. Has anyone ever seen that? 🤔

Tried using my old G27 in Roadcraft, not supported but almost worked, and felt like the way to play 🚛 Tried out MudcraftVR, no wheel support, binary interactions done by gestures, not 1:1. I just wanted to drive off road with good wheel support in VR, but they made it a motion controller title 🤔

I played the original Oculus DK1 Crashland demo and loved it. No standalone headset at hand, so haven't played v1.x, but the FAQ does say a PCVR version of v2.0 should become a thing, at some point. I definitely look forward to it. ☺️ I still have the v0.3 demo files from more than a decade ago 😅

I planned to build a new PC this winter, but then that was shot down by insane memory prices. I guess my 7y/o system still has to last a bit longer, and I'll try to reuse an old PC for a Linux server. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hmm. I guess the community page for SteamVR is not in use much, I only got to it as I was linked from Valve's dev wiki. It hasn't seen a new post since 2018 😅 Still contains imagery for the original Steam Controller and Machine. Whelp! steamcommunity.com/steamvr

Yeah this is a stupid quote chain, but I started it so it's continuing. I have created my app, but holy information overload. Guess I'll leave this be for now and actually work on developing the software, hah. It'll definitely be a learning experience to publish though. Looking forward to it! 🙃

Seems I am in! Just had to do the tax interview twice, and enter my bank details thrice, hah. Feels good to have gotten through that though, time to explore the Steamworks partner site.

BOLL @boll.software · 02/12/2025
Good thing I'm not in a hurry. Turns out my bank data didn't match my tax data so had to fix that with my bank and then restart the process, hah. I'm not even going to charge anyone, but details are details and need to be correct 😤

Is this what happens when Microsoft uses AI for a third of their new code eh? Seems to be working out just fine... yeah: no.

Saturday activity? Setting up a Steamworks account. I want to publish all my VR tools as a single SteamVR application, so I'm prepping while awaiting the release of PanGui. I still need to add bank and tax details even if I want to release a free app, oh well. Brain is too mush, tomorrow it is! 🙃

What happens when work has been very stressful and suddenly that project is finished and I'm left completely brain dead? Abusing my PC in stupid ways of course.

In anticipation of the Steam Frame, I tried just how it is to use the game theater in SteamVR. The game itself has a nice reflection, but any other spawned overlays do not. Overlays cannot be easily moved away either, it's 1:1 only, and windows off screen can be displayed but not interacted with. 🙃

More questions regarding Steam Frame: 6. Maximum tracked space, still Chaperone? Dynamic? 7. Will having a large library of current SteamVR games mean I will soon have a range of ARM titles? 8. Will WebXR be possible in the Steam browser? 9. How sweat resistant is it? 10. Boosters for controllers?

Google Antigravity seems interesting, I might try it in a sandbox for non-essential test projects. That said, if AI does all the coding for us, what will happen in the future when no humans actually code? Unless AI then is an actual AI and can progress science and technology, stagnation? Brainrot.

BOLL @boll.software · 19/11/2025
What do you think is the most popular and/or usable toolset to produce a WebXR project? I have been checking out examples made with A-Frame and Babylon.js, but appear to have a seemingly 50/50 chance of actually launching in VR (Windows, Chrome, SteamVR, Index), which makes me hesitant to jump in.

BOLL @boll.software · 16/11/2025
Questions I still have regarding Steam Frame: 1. Can we make custom tracked objects with IR LEDs? 2. Can we run Android apps in floating windows? 3. What will desktop only background apps act like? (like mine) 4. Can we build & run remotely, up to IDEs? 5. Can we read thermal sensor data? Yeah 🤔

Yesterday, Steam Frame was announced, thoughts: I look forward to: 1. Eye-tracking 2. Wireless 3. Light weight/balanced 4. TMR sticks 5. Tracked gamepad Concerns: 1. Wireless latency 2. LCD dynamic range 3. Audio solution, on par with Index? 4. Comfort of controllers, seem small. Time will tell!

I found out about LitRPG series with Dungeon Crawler Carl, I enjoy the game mechanics applied to a fantasy/sci-fi world, as well as rapid character progression. But as a series progresses and the story is fleshed out I find myself caring more about that than the leveling and skill acquisition.

I might have figured this one out, @valvesoftware.com here's a bug report: steamcommunity.com/groups/Steam... In short: It might be caused by the install path including an escaped backslash. That is what I've seen as a common factor as of yet in any case.

Hah, the current Steam sale has some funny stickers you can get by going through the discovery queue, that I will never use as I basically never use Steam chat, but they are neat to see anyway. I feel like this is an inside joke for the developers. It's not... overflow, but close enough.

Three weeks after starting my research into OS licenses I've finally updated the ones I was concerned about as well as added contribution license agreements where needed. Now I just have to try and get my past contributors to agree to re-license their existing contributions. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hah, I'm going slightly insane 🤪 I am trying to find a media server + Android app combo that will let me: 1. Do differential syncs 2. Sync favorites 3. Run headless server So far Navidrome, Kodi, Plex as server, Symfonium as client, no luck Does anyone run any combo like this? I get stuck on #2 😓

I'm still trying to figure out OSS licensing. I figured I'd ask /r/opensource for feedback. Oh yeah, this is not working out. Automod blocked the post as I mentioned ChatGPT, even if it's not about a solution connecting to it. I'm told to contact mods, but Reddit removed the messaging system. 🙃 Yay.

Now I want to combine my tools into an app on Steam. I've used AGPLv3 as mentioned, which Valve says no to. I'm looking into: 1. How to grant a separate license to Valve 2. How to handle contributed code for that license 3. Any need to re-license projects 4. Possible CLA Publishing FOSS is hard 🥲

BOLL @boll.software · 13/09/2025
I'm checking out VR tools on Steam, I found a familiar interface. I just posted to their forums to ask if they are following the AGPLv3 license or if we had a prior agreement that they could fork and sell my open source project. OpenVROverlayPipe is mine, they published before I added the license. 🤔

And now I'm looking at... * Dear ImGui, but no C# support. Used in Desktop+ * Ultralight, but C# is community built, might work? * Coherent Gameface, made for engine integration? Urgh. I figured this would be a solved problem, or an easy pick, but seems that is mostly true for C++, not for C#. Hm 🤔

BOLL @boll.software · 10/09/2025
Apparently NoesisGUI is an alternative. It seems mainly made for games, but they have a C# SDK seemingly made for applications. I'm not sure how mature it is, there is an official and bundled Rider plugin, but no project template, leaving me mildly bewildered. I'll look for more options.

I just ended development on a custom SteamVR settings page system, as it's just too limited, even if I got it working. Has anyone built a GUI for a SteamVR overlay/app in C# without using a game engine? I'm looking at @avaloniaui.net but not sure if it will work. Guess I'll just have to try it out.
