Ryan North writing Star Trek: Lower Decks feels like such a natural fit. Can Lower Decks survive the move from rapid-fire animation to comics? Ryan North’s first volume proves it mostly can — and understands why the series works. 7.5/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/star-trek-lo...

His fire has no heat, his food has no taste, and his courtroom has no justice. William Campbell’s Trelane is the reason I keep enjoying “The Squire of Gothos”, even when its plotting tests my patience. My review: 7/10. boldlytrek.com/the-squire-o...

Christina Chong is phenomenal, the production design is gorgeous, but is Strange New Worlds relying too heavily on its own gimmicks? My review of “Once La’an a Time”. #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/once-laan-a-...

“The Galileo Seven” gives Spock his first real test of command, and I think its argument is more interesting than simply “logic versus emotion”. Spock is often right. The problem is that being right and being an effective leader are not the same thing. boldlytrek.com/the-galileo-... #StarTrek

Been working my way through @trekranks.com and I’m up to ep126. Properly good-natured Trek chat from people who clearly love the thing. If you’re ever short of a guest, I’d be very happy to jump on and talk Trek with you 😉. I run BoldlyTrek, and always have an opinion on anything Star Trek. 🖖

Star Trek: The Last Starship, Vol. 1 is ambitious, messy, thoughtful, and occasionally brilliant. Kirk gets the headlines. Wowie Carter gets the heart of the book. 7.5/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/star-trek-th...

That’s why Harry works so well against Star Trek’s optimism. A better society can offer rehabilitation and another chance. It still can’t make someone choose to become better. boldlytrek.com/harry-mudd-can-he-ev…

The cast are excellent, the puppetry is technically remarkable, and there is some very good character writing underneath all the felt. But I found the episode horrible to watch, and the ending only made that worse. 4/10 boldlytrek.com/level-five-t... #StarTrek

What does someone actually do in Starfleet? The uniforms make it look simple. The closer you look at the Enterprise-D, Deep Space 9 and people like Miles O’Brien, the messier and more interesting Starfleet becomes. New long-form editorial on BoldlyTrek. boldlytrek.com/what-do-peop... #StarTrek

“A Case of Chiaroscuro” looks like another Strange New Worlds gimmick episode, but there is a proper Star Trek story underneath it about occupation, resistance, and when following the rules stops being enough. 7.5/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/strange-new-...

Karidian has spent 20 years pretending to be somebody else. He is not the only one. “The Conscience of the King” turns Enterprise into a stage for guilt, revenge, trauma, and the identities people construct when the truth becomes impossible to carry. 8/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/star-trek-to...

“Balance of Terror” gives Star Trek something it had largely lacked until this point. A genuine political adversary. Kirk and the Romulan commander never even learn each other’s names, yet by the end they understand one another remarkably well. #StarTrek 9/10 boldlytrek.com/star-trek-to...

Spock mind melds with a houseplant. Una sings Bonnie Tyler in Klingon. Scotty spends part of the episode dressed as a Mugato. This episode was great for most parts but I had some real issues with “Human Best Friend”. Review of SNW S04E03 7/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/star-trek-st...

“Valles Marineris” brings Strange New Worlds back with ancient Mars, prehistoric Earth, a vanished fifth planet, and a moral dilemma that the episode never quite gives enough room to breathe. #StarTrek Ambitious, messy, and visually impressive. 7.5/10. boldlytrek.com/star-trek-st...

The tricorder is one of Star Trek’s cleverest inventions, not because it knows everything, but because it represents a discipline: observe first, gather evidence, and only then decide what to do. #StarTrek My new Technology Spotlight: boldlytrek.com/tricorder

The Menagerie takes Star Trek's failed pilot, cuts it apart, and turns it into history. What starts as a production shortcut becomes a story about Spock's loyalty, Pike's suffering, and when reality itself stops feeling like enough. #StarTrek My review: boldlytrek.com/star-trek-to...

The Corbomite Maneuver: the first thing TOS made after being greenlit, and the episode where Star Trek worked out what it believed. Kirk bluffs an all-powerful alien, wins, then turns round to help it back up. Still my favourite hour of the show. #StarTrek New review: boldlytrek.com/star-trek-to...

Our TOS rewatch reaches Dagger of the Mind. A plastic dome with a light in it becomes one of the scariest things TOS ever made, on one bleak idea: a machine that doesn’t hurt you, it empties you. Shame nobody worked out what the villain wanted. 7/10 #StarTrek boldlytrek.com/star-trek-to...
