I would say no technology is inherently for austerity (or abundance). Today’s leaning into austerity is driven by the (universalized) desire for “more” rather than “less” imho. Humans don’t have a good track record on “just enough” in anything, but it would be exciting to see that change. #FF2025

Attending “AILA President's Program: Truth, Identity, and Responsibility: Libraries and the Issue of Pretendians” at #alaac25. A great program (slides at docs.google.com/presentation...)
Citizenship & Blood Quantum
Native Americans are not a 'race' of people, but citizens of sovereign nations - much like being American, Canadian, or Mexican.
• Each Native nation defines its own criteria for citizenship, often utilizing blood quantum.
• Important note: Native Identity is reciprocal.
You can claim a community, but a community also needs to claim you back. The Harm of Pretendians
• Patterns of Deception in order to gain wealth and fame (authors, professors, influencers)
• Real Community Examples
• An Artist/Community Curator
• A Library Program
• Well known authors
• The Trail of MetadataWhat can and should we be doing?
• Educate yourself
• Attend training, consult resources
• Inventory and evaluate your collection
• Have concrete policies within your collection development that reflect the importance of authentic Indigenous Identity and Experience
• Make a plan or a procedure to follow when books/authors are questioned
• Ask for community references when inviting

From Debbie: "And I ought to do a page with a list of people who wrote children's books and claimed to be Native but I don't have one yet. There's lots of stand-alone pages, like this one I did in 2007 on Forrest Carter who wrote The Education of Little Tree. The comments are good because many are from librarians trying to figure out where to put that book."

Just making it obvious that I work at a library in my first post! Not exactly in these beautiful spaces but in relative proximity with less books and a lot more machines. XD
