Our favourite street art is by Smug. He created a huge painting on a block of flats in the city centre. This is a detail from a mural in a car park. A cute little rat. #bearinBelgium #streetart

We’re in Hasselt, following a street art trail. In the Beguinage, you can climb a tower. There are peepholes in the stairwell, giving you a bird’s eye view of the street art. #bearinBelgium #streetart

The weather has taken a turn. It really feels autumnal now. The perfect time for a comforting soup and a nice glass of red wine. #bearinBelgium

It's the last day of our little holiday. Human had to pop out for some errands and it's started to rain, so I'm taking some time to reminisce about yesterday's exhibition. #bearinBelgium
A bear in a red and white T-shirt looking at photographs of paintings in a book. The painting depicts a white lighthouse in Heist. The artist is Jean Brusselmans.

In the mid-19th century, the Hubertus Galleries, designed by architect Jan Pieter Cluysenaar, were the longest, tallest and most beautiful shopping arcade in the world, with the greatest amount of natural light thanks to their enormous 200-metre-long glass roof. #bearinBelgium

We appreciate the style because it’s straightforward. At first glance, it appears simple, but there’s a lot of depth to it. These are some of our favourites. #jeanbrusselmans #bozar

A retrospective of the painter Jean Brusselmans (1884–1953) at Bozar. He translates his deep connection with the Brabant landscape and his austere way of life into an authentic and recognisable visual language at the crossroads of abstraction and figuration. #bearinBelgium #art

Today we’re going for a walk in the Heverlee Woods. In the woods, there are sculptures by the artist Ad Wouters, carved from dead or dying oak trees. This is the Troll. As a playful touch, he has carved a cute teddy bear on the back. #bearinBelgium #walkingisfun

Balat’s greenhouses and pavilions were both aesthetic and technical masterpieces. The Balatkas (Crown Greenhouse) at Meise Botanical Garden was his first major project, followed by iconic structures such as the Royal Greenhouses at Laeken. #bearinBelgium

Ode to the Winter Garden: Inspired by Balat. Artists pay a visually striking tribute to Balat’s architecture. Through three-metre-high prints of their artworks, they demonstrate how the light, rhythm and elegance in his work continues to inspire them. This is by François Schuiten. #bearinBelgium

A visit to the Botanical Garden in Meise for the exhibition: ‘Paradise Lost? 200 Years of Vision on Nature and Architecture – Alphonse Balat – The King’s Architect’. The exhibition pays tribute to Alphonse Balat, the master of glass and iron and the inspiration behind Victor Horta. #bearinBelgium

There was another event at Les Invalides (which was why we weren’t permitted to go inside last time), but this time we were able to watch. Medals were awarded for the Croix de la Valeur Militaire (the Cross for Military Valour).

The Black God is a statue of Christ, over 800 years old, located in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboortekerk in Hoboken. According to legend it would disappear whenever it was moved, only to return magically to the spot where it had originally washed ashore on the banks of the Scheldt. #bearinBelgium

The Église Sainte-Catherine in Honfleur is the largest wooden church in France, known for its ship-like roof structure. The church was built around 1450, following the 100 Years' War. As there were no stonemasons available, the locals used shipbuilding techniques. #bearinfrance

Saint-Joseph Church is one of the most audacious architectural achievements of architect Auguste Perret, who rebuilt the city of Le Havre after its destruction at the end of the Second World War. It is one of the masterpieces of modernism. We’re taking shelter from the rain here. #travellingbear

The townhall at Le Havre is a post-war modernist building designed by architect Auguste Perret. The old townhall was destroyed by British bombardment in 1944. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage reconstruction area, built with reinforced concrete. #travellingbear

Last night we stayed in a different hotel to the one we’d originally booked. They moved us to a nearby hotel with a higher star rating. And today, in Le Havre, we’re getting a room upgrade. A big room with a sitting area and a bathroom with a bath – much to Human’s delight. #travellingbear

We walked around the buildings. What’s happening is that President Emmanuel Macron is holding a military ceremony and a parade on the Cour d’honneur at Les Invalides. This marks the end of the renovation work on the historic courtyard. No bears allowed... #bearinParis

We’re spending half a day and a night in Paris before travelling on to Le Havre and Honfleur tomorrow. We had tickets for the Hôtel des Invalides but got a message yesterday saying that, exceptionally, they were closed. There are lots of police around, so it must be important. #bearinParis

It's Open Monument Day in Flanders today. Human signed up for a walk to see interesting buildings in Heist-op-den-Berg. Rain was forecast, so I stayed at home. Marcelleke is rewarded with a post-walk beer – a ‘bosprotter’. That translates as ‘someone who farts in the woods’. 🤭 #smallbearsneedbear

The final days of the ‘Singing Red’ exhibition at KMSKA. This exhibition brings together 3 artists who have redefined painting with rich, unrestrained pigments. They are James Ensor, Rik Wouters and Jules Schmalzigaug, drawing inspiration from the red in Rubens’ paintings. Marcelleke is a fan.
