I saw this embossed stamp in a book on archive.org: "Library of Charles L. Perdue Jr" with his initials in the center, and I really want something similar to mark my own books. To my astonishment, you can custom-order a stamp for doing this from Etsy for less than $8!
Part of a yellowed page, with a circular embossed stamp which says "Library of Charles L. Perdue Jr" around the edge. It has his initials, CLP, in the center. It looks very classy!

And here's the local newspaper report on their deaths.
An extract from a newspaper report.

A husband and wife, roped together, died after falling 300 feet while attempting to climb 12,900-foot Mount Toll near Brainard Lake on Saturday.

Julie Boucher, 33, probably died immediately, and Clive Baillie, 34, died about 45 minutes after rescuers arrived at the scene.

The north face of Mount Toll involves a technical climb, its ragged ridge looming above Blue Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. The face is known to be a very severe, almost vertical ascent.

According to Rocky Mountain Rescue member Skip Greene, the call for help went out about 2:30 p.m. The person who reported the accident told Greene that he had been climbing Mount Audubon when he glanced over towards Toll and saw the couple falling off the face, with large rocks tumbling around them.

This feeble attempt at a pre-midterm bribe from the felon president arrived by email this afternoon. Really, Donald! You'll have to do much better than this! I mean, we* can just pocket the money and vote against you! * Not me. I'm on a greeen card and can't vote in the US.
Text from an email I received today.

Subject: A message from President Trump
Message body: Dear Bodhipaksa,
Congress provided 2 Billion Dollars to make improvements to the Medicare program for Americans enrolled in traditional Medicare. | believe the best way to do that is to put healthcare dollars back where they belong—directly in the hands of the American People. As a result, you are receiving a One-Time Payment of $90 to offset some of the cost of your October Medicare premium. This will ensure these funds benefit YOU and your individual healthcare needs.

I loved this cartoon, but the person who posted it included what I think of as "fuck you, visually impaired person" alt text — that is, text that doesn't meaningfully describe what's in the image. TL;DR — reposting with alt text.
A square, four-panel cartoon, with flying crows, seen fairly close up, in all four panels.. The crows are very cartoon-like, with heads almost as large as their bodies and huge round eyes. They're very cute. In the third panel one crow says to another, "I don't think we're in a cartoon." In the fourth, another crow replies, "I think we are just flying past a window." And in fact, you notice that some of the crows are split over two panels, and what looked like a four-panel cartoon is actually a four-panel window, in a single-panel cartoon. This very clever image is signed "Jim Benton."

What would I look like in the 80's? A bit like this...
A young man sitting on an armcair with his legs crossed and his hands on his lap, fingers intertwined. He looks very serious. He has a lot of hair, which is standing up and swept back in a very 1980's way. He's wearing dark clothing — possibly black, but a white t-shirt is showing through the neck of his sweater.

From Heather Cox Richardson's newsletter. I had not heard that articles of impeachment had been raised against Hegseth. By a Republican! heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p…
Yesterday Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) blindsided House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) by introducing eight counts of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The first three articles accuse him of “waging war in contravention of the War Powers Resolution of 1973.” The fourth accuses him of “ignoring laws that minimize civilian casualties.” The fifth accuses him of directing “the extrajudicial killings of at least 221 persons aboard seagoing vessels” in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. The sixth accuses him of “suppressing free speech” through his attempts to silence Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), a Navy veteran. The seventh article accuses him of the “kidnapping of a sovereign foreign leader,” Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro. The final article charges Hegseth with waging an “unlawful war in Yemen,” in 2025.

It seems like a tipping point when two thirds of the stories on the BBC Europe news page are about Russia waging asymmetrical warfare on Europe. I can only hope that Europe is retaliating in some way.
Two thirds of the headlines on the BBC News' Europe page are about actual or suspected attacks by Russia: flares fired by a Russian warship at a Danish military helicopter, the sabotage of rail lines in the Netherlands causing disruption, a drone shot down over Lithuania, a train that Boris Johnson and other leaders had been on being attacked by s drone, and Russian attacks on Ukrainian postal workers and facilities.

Read this description of psychopathy from Dr Karen Mitchell (she calls it the "persistent predatory personality"), and tell me if you can see daylight between it and Donald Trump's personality. From […] [Original post on mastodon.scot]
From this research, which took her five years, Mitchell built a template of 20 attributes, divided into four clusters, and 25 tactics that would identify a high-functioning persistent predatory personality type. Cluster one includes a need for control; a grandiose sense of self; pathological inner response to challenge; vengefulness; refusal to compromise. Cluster two includes being predatory or exploitative; sadistic and cruel; having a low regard for laws, agreements, social and moral codes; no boundaries in sexual relationships; unreasonable expectations of others. Cluster three relates to the truth: Dark Personalities cultivate a façade of normality; they are chameleon-like; dishonest; devious and manipulative; and unwilling to accept responsibility for the negative impacts they cause. Finally, cluster four is around the Dark Personality’s own interior life: their emotions are acted and they do not experience affinity or the joy that comes with it; they are callous and devoid of empathy; unremorseful; self-interested; and brazen.

Today, someone kindly let me know that my most recent book was reviewed in Tricycle magazine.
SIT: 28 Days to a Rock-Solid Daily Meditation Habit, by Bodhipaksa.
Wisdom Publications, 2026. 256 pp., $19.95, hardcover.

Bodhipaksa, a meditation teacher who struggled to sit consistently, arrived at a counterintuitive conclusion: Willpower has nothing to do with it. SIT recommends a twenty-eight-day program built around cultivating behavioral habits rather than resolving them - microhabits, working with resistance, and reframing setbacks as part of the path. The author, grounded in Buddhist teachings and modern psychology, gives an honest assessment of the gap between knowing meditation matters and actually practicing it. This is a useful guide for anyone who keeps meaning to sit and doesn't.

I work on being tolerant, but occasionally someone steps into your comments and you have to wonder, WTF is up with this guy?
In reponse to a post by @SeanCasten, in which he discussed a new airport rail link in Chicago that is forecast to charge what I consider to be a lot of money for a 30 minute ride, I wrote:

"The equivalent train journey from the airport in Seattle is $6. | believe it's only $1 if you're over 65"

Someone called stephen ryner jr., who wears a mask for some reason, replied:
"that's nice."

I wrote: "That cities choose to make transportation affordable and popular
rather than see it as another opportunity to squeeze yet more money out of
ordinary people is, as you say, 'nice.'"

The same guy wrote: "you seem nice too"

I concluded with "Another thing that's nice is the existence of the mute and block
buttons here."

Reader, I blocked him.

Today I remembered Peter Sagal's Rules of Twitter, which are always worth reflecting on.
Peter's Rules of Twitter, originally posted 25 October 2021.

1) You will and have regretted many tweets. You will never regret not tweeting.

2) Is it intended to delight, inform or amuse? Then go ahead. If not, don't.

3) Never argue with anybody about anything. Really.

4) ...except pizza, whether hot dogs are sandwiches, and old movies/TV shows.

5) Don't say anything about a piece of current art/writing/culture you wouldn't
say to the face of the person who created it.

6) Never promote any info or news unless it comes from a source you would
trust to tell you which door the tiger is behind.

7) The only useful purpose of having a bigger platform than other people is to
use it to benefit those other people, so boost and recommend widely.

8) Resist the common urge to engage with the one critic rather than the many
fans.

9) Never, ever insult anyone personally. Mockery is fine, as long as it is aimed
upwards.

10) To survive on the veldt, humans evolved to crave sugars and fats and to get
energized by anger and fear. We don’t live on the veldt anymore. Refrain from
feeding obsolete hungers.

Mount Rainier, sandwiched between layers of clouds. Taken yesterday after takeoff from Seattle.
Mount Rainier's peak is seen rising above a layer of cloud textured like whipped cream, while a thinner layer of cloud hangs overhead. The mountain sits in mostly clear sky between these two layers, but it has a thick cap of cloud, while off to the left at the same level is a similar cloud — possibly an earlier cap that had been detached by the wind. The entire image is in shades of white and blue, as if a color filter had been used, although that isn't the case.

Love this cartoon by Tom Tomorrow!
A six-panel cartoon entitled this modern world, by Tom tomorrow.

Panel one: it’s time once again to check in with our neighbors on parallel earth – a world very much like our own, yet strangely different. The panel shows two earths, one of which is a reflection of the other.

Panel two. Caption: In their last election, parallel Americans chose a poop-flinging baboon as president. Footnote: Parallel election laws are somewhat less restrictive than ours. The illustration shows John Roberts saying, "Repeat after me, 'I solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office…“'

The baboon screeches and throws poop at Roberts’ forehead. Roberts continues “or maybe just nod in agreement.“

Panel, three. Caption: at first the slim plurality of voters responsible for his victory applaud his unorthodox tactics. One man in a suit says "ha ha! The poop flinging baboon will fling poop all over those radical woke Democrats!“ Another man in a suit says, "With his aggressively masculine displays of dominance, parallel. America will truly be respected again!"

Panel four. Caption: as time passes some begin to have their doubts. A man in a suit says, "We went to a poop-flinging baboon rally and you will not believe what happened next!" Another man says, "When I voted for the poop-flinging baboon I didn’t think he would fling poop at me." Both men are covered in poop

Panel five. Caption: But members of his party remain resolute in their support. A voice off-panel says, "Mr. Speaker, was it appropriate for the president to fling poop at the entire NATO Summit?" Speaker Johnson replies, "Look I haven’t seen the video, but the president has a mandate to fling poop anywhere he chooses." Johnson's face and suit are covered in poop.

Panel six. Caption: And his hard-core base backs him, no matter what. One man in a red hat with “poop“ written on it says, "As long as he continues to make life miserable for immigrants, trans people, and everyone else I hate, he can fling all the poop he wants!" Another man says, "He is the greatest president in parallel, American history – and anyone who disagrees should be covered in poop!"

Next: the president redecorates the awful office – with poop!

A garter snake, with alternating light and dark stripes running the length of its body, hiding under a white plastic sack. We can see just the head and "shoulders," so to speak. Post from Jamie Dupree on Bluesky. “Reflecting Pool Blue Paint update, Thursday 4:30pm. Yes, it's still pretty green and yes, the blue paint is peeling up in spots, poking above the surface.”
A child in a red shirt reaches over the edge of a stone walkway around the Reflecting Pool. A large piece of “American flag blue” paint that has peeled off is projecting above the surface of the water. In the background, the Lincoln Memorial is visible.

Some hero surreptitiously etched 86 47 on the National Mall. Unfortunately the 4 didn't really work. The White House is lying that this is "advocating violence."
The lawn on the National Mall. The number 8 of 86 is very clear. The 6 is a bit fainter. You can just make out the 7 in 47, but the 4 is barely visible.

Damn! While I was alphabetizing my vinyl, I pulled one out that I’ve never played before, and rusty razor blade fell out of the sleeve. I’m assuming it was just an oversight on someone’s part, but still…
The cover of an LP. It’s Ives’ string quartets played by the Julliard Quartet. Lying on the sleeve is a rusty razor blade.

Here's the snake that was in our garage this morning. My partner got a decent photograph, which I was unable to do myself.
A garter snake, approximately half a meter (20 inches) long, and with long pale stripes running down its body.

The alphabetizing of my vinyl collection is complete! (The "B" category expends into the third cubby.) Most of these were bought used, including that huge collection of the Beethoven Bicentennial edition. That, I must say, was a big disappointment. I had […] [Original post on mastodon.scot]
An Ikea Kallax cabinet with eight cubical cubbies, the perfect size for housing vinyl. Four and a half of the cubes are filled with records, a lot of them being boxed sets.
