This beauty is out today by Donna Gowland. It's the first in a new series of mysteries featuring Mary Shelley and I think everyone should read it

On Friday (this week) I'm heading into my publishers to sign and number the first 200 copies of my book, which are available now on pre-order!! These exclusive copies are ONLY available here: tinyurl.com/ycwdfphn because I want to support the brilliant indie bookstore @biggreenbooks.bsky.social 😀 📚

A photo of the book in hardcover against a wooden background. The cover is a very light peach colour and has illustrations by Adam Beer of: a café in orange, a seagull and a girl with a kite in blue, a green pigeon, pink cow parsley and plastic bags and a yellow origami boat and leaves. The title is The place I’m in ‘WHAT I SEE WHEN I STOP TO NOTICE’ in black letters. It has this quote at the bottom ‘This Book is lovely’ by Philip Pullman.

A photo of a double-page spread of chapter heading ‘ON THE STREET’. The colour of the pages is blue, and the book is against a pink background. There are observations by me (the black text is too small for most people to read) and black-and-white illustrations by Adam Beer of: umbrellas in the rain, a puddle, the top of a double-decker bus, the side of a building and peoples’ legs and feet waiting in a bus queue.

Just had a rejection from an agent for The Titanic Cat. It was a lovely, kind email, but still a rejection. So unless any other publishers or agents out there would like to read Jenny's story, I may just have to go it alone

The Story and The Engine was another excellent #DoctorWho episode, visually beautiful and superbly written. More Inua Ellams please. Then there was *that* cameo and *those* clips! As for *that other* cameo - what did that mean? This series is too short. I want to travel with 15 and Bel forever.

This series of #DoctorWho continues to prove that we need more than two series of Ncuti Gatwa. In two short scenes he showed both ends of the Doctor's character. His angry vengeance towards the man who betrayed his friends was magnificent

I'm just glad he didn't bring the Easter Bunny along

The Well was brilliant. It's jumped into my favourite ever #DoctorWho stories, certainly since 2005. Varada Sethu is one of the best actors to grace the role of companion and Rose Ayling-Ellis is among the all time great supporting actors. (All my own opinions)

Alan Cummings was absolutely immense as Mr R and there were some genuine scares. I didn't mind the fan bit and I'm thoroughly intrigued to know what the deal with May 24th is and who Mrs Flood is. I'm hoping my Davies delivers on both. On this basis, it looks like he might just do that

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 20/04/2025

So yesterday's #DoctorWho then. It was all I hoped for and more. Ncuti and Varada have the potential to be an all-time top TARDIS team. They're both gorgeous but their on screen chemistry is immense. The thought that this might only be for eight episodes makes me sad. I want more!

Yesterday marked 113 years since the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic, an event with which I have a close family connection. I have written a middle grade novel about Jenny, the cat who didn't sail on Titanic and I'd love to hear from any publishers or agents who fancy a read of it!

#RIP Jean Marsh. Co creator of some of the best series ever to be seen on television, as well as playing two iconic roles in #DoctorWho. It's a huge loss.

Overall, a much more solid, enjoyable episode than I was expected from the trailers and publicity. That means the episodes I am excited about should be amazing. I just hope this isn't echoing Sylvester McCoy. He had an excellent last season too...

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 13/04/2025

It wasn't perfect. The dialogue veered from the sparkling "timey wimey? Am I six?" to some clunky exposition, and I'd question whether the incel line was absolutely necessary. And as for the cat...didn't like that and yet I've probably watched hundreds of humans die like that in Who!

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 13/04/2025

I loved the design work, especially the rather Flash Gordon rocket and the robots' guns. I'll swear I had one like that in the 70s that shot sparks. I'm not usually a fan of cutesy robots (hated Gadget in Waters of Mars) but the polish bot was adorable and I want one

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 13/04/2025

Loved last night's #DoctorWho. It was my favourite companion intro since Partners in Crime and as Belinda, Verada Sethu might end up among the all-time great companions. She's the perfect foil for Ncuti's bouncy, occasionally reckless Doctor and the chemistry they have will light up our screens

But, and this is the point of this thread, there has never, ever been a time I wanted the show to be cancelled just because there were things I didn't like. I waited for better things and they always came. I'd quite to be able to continue doing that please.

000

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 11/04/2025

I liked a lot of the McGann movie but hated the proposed plans for how it might continue. In the modern era, I wasn't keen on the Slitheen, The End of Time, the whole death of the Doctor and its resolution thing, the Monks episodes, Missy's redemption arc, Orphan 55 and Space Babies

000

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 11/04/2025

I thought Tom Baker stayed too long and I was very much ready for him to leave. I don't think Warriors of The Deep is all that bad, but Time Flight is. I didn't particularly enjoy the Colin Baker era or the start of the McCoy years. The later McCoy years were great.

000

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 11/04/2025

I should add that I'm not saying the show is perfect, but then I can't think of one season since the show began that has been. I find The Sensorites very slow, The Invasion takes too long to get going, but is ace when it does and The Mind of Evil is dull.

Bob Stone @bobstoneauthor.bsky.social · 11/04/2025

I'm hoping the #DoctorWho community here is less unpleasant than other places. My personal take, as a fan since 1971, and having now seen all existing episodes is that I'm very much looking forward to the new episodes. I love Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Verada Sethu looks great. Bring it on!

20 years since #DoctorWho returned. I waited nervously to see the new version of the show I've loved since 1971. I've always found something to love in every Doctor, every companion, every story and don't see that changing any time soon. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to my favourite show

Gutted that I was unsuccessful in the Hachette Children's Book Awards, but if any agents/publishers would like to read a MG book about the cat on the Titanic, give me a shout!

Once again I have failed to prepare for World Book Day by having inadequate stock of Disney books and books based on things on the telly #badbookseller

I won't be making pancakes tomorrow. My wife says I'm not very good at it. At least I think that's what she meant by 'hopeless tosser'...

As someone just four years younger than Phil Mitchell, tonight's #EastEnders moved me and made me think in ways I wasn't expecting. Superb piece of telly. Congratulations to all concerned

And finally, lumped together became they don't fit anywhere else, is my only children's picture book (to date), a collection of one-act play scripts and a ghostly, WW1-set novella. And that's it so far. All the above books are available on Amazon

I returned to self-publishing, with the wonderful support and assistance of the awesome TAUK Publishing for the Chapel Bay series, two of which were written as fundraising challenges supporting breast cancer charities

Next, I was lucky enough to have a Young Adult urban fantasy trilogy published by Beaten Track Publishing. There is also a novella and a short story collection which complement the trilogy

Seeing as this is now my social medium of choice, I thought I might say a bit more about my author journey. It started when I self published two tales of Squish the red squirrel and his forest pals, illustrated by Holly Bushnell

I had too many characters in one of my books finding themselves doing something or other. My editor told me more people found themselves in my book than they did at Woodstock 😂

Blimey Rachel. Sounds like something out of Father Brown! Haven't heard anything like that since I ate a box of polystyrene chunks because I mistook them for Cheesy Wotsits
