If you haven't read 1984 lately, or at all, I'm not going to make you... But if you at least read through this Wikipedia page you will likely gasp multiple times finding yet another similarity between today's world and Orwell's […] [Original post on techhub.social]

At any moment, however, an alliance could shift and the two states that had previously been at war with each other may suddenly ally against the other. When this happened, the past immediately had to be re-written—newspapers retyped, new photos glued over old—to provide continuity. In many cases that which contradicted the state was simply destroyed. This occurs during Oceania's Hate Week, when it is announced that the state is at war with Eastasia and allied to Eurasia, despite the assembled crowd—including Winston and Julia—having just witnessed the executions of Eurasian prisoners of war. Winston describes how, when the announcer spoke, "nothing altered in his voice or manner or in the content of what he was saying, but suddenly the names were different". Orwell describes the war as one of "limited aims between combatants who are unable to destroy one another, have no material cause for fighting and are not divided by any genuine ideological difference". These wars, suggests the writer Roberta Kalechofsky, "stimulate the news or 'the truth'".

If you have 74 hashtags in your post you're getting blocked. Mastodon thrives on hashtags but it's not for spamming and there just isn't any other reason I can think of for having anywhere close to that many tags. So good job on making it into my feed and I'm glad I'll never see your posts again.

A crop of a screenshot from a mastodon post showing hashtags used. It displays hashtags for economics, markets, and economy and then hides the rest but says there are 71 more in the post.

This is the first 4th that my air filter in my living room (and the one in my bedroom on the other side of my apartment) has responded to a significant drop in air quality (from fireworks outside blocks away).

A shark cleanIQ air filter showing the air is only 83% clean and with an orange ring indicating reduced air quality.

Now that the heat has ended the weather is going to pull another painful trick on me.

A weather forecast showing 95°F on Sunday which declines through Wednesday when it will be 71°F and then jump back up to 95°F on Thursday.

I'm so tired of seeing this. Over the last 3 weeks I think about 60% of the time I try to create a shipment I get this error (one time was a login error instead). This is from different networks as well. Anyone else been having issues with FedEx? #FedEx

I think it's worth sharing the email announcing the song.as well

Hey Eleventyfriends,

Camerashy is out today on all streaming platforms. I don't have words for the horrors that we've witnessed in the US since the first of the year. It seems like every day that passes, creating music becomes more an act of resistance. It feels pointless to pursue in the face of such societal disfunction, and even so, it's one of the only ways I know to heal. This new song was written after the civilian shootings earlier this year in Minnesota. They could have easily been our friends. For months now I've been fearful of receiving calls that someone I know and love is gone, missing or dead because they stood up to cruelty. My little corner of America feels radioactive with the ghosts of every cautionary tale I read in high school English Lit.

I imagined this song as a warning system played at a club or party. I wanted it campy. I wanted it serious. When so much resistance is required, do we have any choice but to make it fun? This track is my personal reminder that I can't afford the cost of being camera shy about standing up to hatred, corrupt power, and willful ignorance.

Graciously,

Matt / Eleventyseven

So what Democrats are demanding are requirements that ICE follow the laws that they already aren't following? The democrat party and especially Chuck Schumer are going to continue to have blood on their hands. These theatrics for constituents are shameful […] [Original post on techhub.social]

Senate Democrats want any bill to fund DHS to restrict the tactics that ICE uses in the field, specifically calling for them to stop wearing masks and carrying out searches and arrests without a judge's warrant. In a memo made public earlier this month, ICE authorised its agents to make warrantless searches.
