If I were running a university where staff spent weeks and weeks of time putting grant proposals together only for UKRI to feed them into LLMs without informed consent—effectively theft of the time and work—I’d be taking serious action to defend those staff. But I’m not running a university, so

Students don’t want to be fleeced and swindled by profiteering outfits like United Student, to whom many unis have outsourced their accommodation problems. Well done young people.

Dark Lotus (noun): A genre of films and tv series in which a cast of unlikeable characters travel to a holiday destination or resort, only to be beset by misfortune - with much of the entertainment value derived from watching them suffer, unravel, or mutually destruct. Etymol.: 'The White Lotus'.

I managed to slip in a pretty blatant dig at the modern university managerial class in my last article. And neither the readers nor the editors saw a problem with it. So it’s right there, in the published version, and open access too! 😂

If I’m honest, I didn’t love The Odyssey film. But I don’t want to break “Zeus’s Law” (whatever that is), so I’ll simply say: Up the Sea People!!

Got my hands on a copy of this — hot off the press. Her writing is absolutely gorgeous. Her earlier book, The Land Where Lemons Grow: The Story of Italy and Its Citrus Fruit, is one of my all-time favourite books. This one should be just as good.

Literally every word of this article. These bastards are largely responsible for the job cuts and all the other atrocities. Management consultancies should have no role in the running of universities, or any public-sector institution for that matter. It’s basically privatisation by stealth.

But then when it goes badly, the manager gets sacked not them. The lowly paid staff at the club receive redundancy notice, not them.

Like the Pro-Vice Deans, sporting directors at clubs have overwhelming authority on everything from finance to transfer to youth development to style of football. They earn huge amounts of money while occupying such positions.

These people, like the Pro-Vice Deans in modern universities, now call the shots. Yet they themselves are almost never accountable for failures.

This is what injustice looks like: we don’t have anything from books 7-10 of Tacitus’ Annals, yet we have four books — FOUR long tedious books — of Ovid’s Ex Ponto.
