to me it seems like they're missing the point, which is that coding, in the sense of writing the syntax, is the easy part. the hard part is designing the solution to fit the problem and to be maintainable, and actually maintaining it

unfortunately it's still at the point where choosing the sounds requires specific knowledge of what bytes to write to the chip's sound registers. (Or fortunately, if you want to learn how the hardware works, hahaha). Eventually most of it will be abstracted away.
