The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

(not trying to dunk or pile on, I think labor and toil reduction is usually a good thing in the big picture, just have a brain itch about the broad statement)

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 29/09/2026
Is that actually true? Like, what is the more specific claim/observation about labor markets? Has anything ever reduced long-term employment? it's always felt like saying "eh, these things tend to sort themselves out".

our main focus is getting the directory operations transferred. doing transparency logs and post-quantum definitely on everybody's minds.

I'd registered that earlier thinking we might want the shorter domain. but it emphasized the cred/red confusion, and the .org is nice both as a TLD signal being actually part of the entity name

I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

this would return the record in CBOR with commit-like metadata, eg in a STAR-lite file. you don't get to reuse the signed commit like you do for public broadcast, but that is already the case with full repo exports

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 28/09/2026
we are hoping/planning to add an endpoint that requests a single space record and gets a cryptographic commitment on that single record the same way you get one on the overall repo. eg, LtHash of a set with one element (or maybe just SHA-256 of the record or something)

Hello World from the PLC organization (plcred.org)! The org was soft-announced back in March at AtmosphereConf. We've been working through logistics step by step and now have a public web presence we can point to.

if/when we do community notes, it would be cool if everybody who interacted with the OP got a notification when an annotation goes live. (idk if twitter did that)

yeah, though I do like it being '*l' in ASCII versus hex, and having space for version/variant in there is good
030
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
oh, I see the size limits are in the text. i'd probably make that more flexible? eg, a default or recommendation, but feels like it should be able to adapt if atproto norms change

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
eg the blobs example I gave they would end up with 'blob/...' at the end, which would be out of overall sort order. for multi-space-repo export, could be nested, with keys being space-ref, and the value being a STAR file. would expect readers to have configurable "max block size"
240
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
yeah this looks nice. nit-picky, but I think of magic bytes as being 4x bytes, which is also a bit more word-aligned. could be just another 0x00 for now. explicitly possible to have zero key/value pairs, right? wonder if the key sort ordering should be more use-case specified...

has anybody tried asking an AI agent to help migrate an old platform account to atproto? eg, "migrate all my instagram posts to grain", or "migrate my twitter account to blacksky". like it requests and processes an export, matches following graph particularly fun if meta muse can do it

FWIW my overall vibes around this being the spaces repo serialization spec are that i'm now open to it. I still think a CAR format would not be too bad, and being boring/consistent would be good. but i'm not strident about it.
060
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
I've always kind of wanted a way to optionally include blobs. maybe that could be a second section, after all the records, with path 'blob/<cid>'? varints: i'd stick to what is currently used count in header: I'd probably skip? feels like Content-Length HTTP header would be more useful (but hard)

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
as danny notes being able to do a "multi-space" repo account export might be nice for backup+migration. though maybe that could just be a zip or tarball. ability to do a single space record would be nice, wrapping a CBOR record. maybe a different magic version and header CBOR '$type'?
150
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 25/09/2026
some notes parallel to @dholms.at: I'm confused why the commitment (integrity?) hash would not go in the header CBOR. I like having magic! and it being extensible. combining the "type" and "version" together in a single byte might work?

I'm not super surprised? huge amounts of fuzzing, static analysis, defense in depth, etc had already been thrown at it. very far from human review/eyes alone. i'd be curious what flavor of tooling has had the best payoff-per-compute-cycles, but path dependency makes that hard to sort out

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 23/09/2026
one idea around this was that the auth server would detect if permission-sets "covered" any bare inline permissions, and would "roll them up" if so. i'm not sure if that ended up shipping in the ref impl

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 23/09/2026
as an alternative metric i'd be curious about "fraction hours of productive/positive web use than happen in a browser session w/ bookmarks". eg, i'd assume browser usage is power law, and heavy users more likely to use bookmarks
010
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 23/09/2026
eg, ctrl-t (new tab), or meta-f (new browser session), then type a word that matches a bookmark or recent website is a sub-conscious flow for me. remote search is slower and almost never what I want, I have it disabled. also super psychologically helpful for me to drop tabs in to black hole folders

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 23/09/2026
I use them intensively on my main device (laptop, don't use sync). I organize social posts and essays that I link folks to frequently. search is bad for finding important stuff if I don't know exact keywords/names. I heavily use location bar type-ahead, which matches bookmark titles+URLs very fast

the simplespace managing-app thing makes it very easy to define space access based on arbitrary info, without managing an actual member list. you could create restricted spaces based on: - handle on a domain or TLD - PLC identity minted in a time window (eg, elders only) - account labels
