Federal style dining table comprised of two end pedestals each mounted to half of top (a-b) and a middle leaf (c). The two pedestals each consist of a reeded-edge table top on a lathe-turned pillar with four splayed legs. The tops of the pillars are urn-shaped, and the front face of each of the legs is carved in a waterleaf design on the upper portion and widely reeded on the lower portion. The legs terminate in brass paw feet with casters. The edge of the middle leaf is also reeded.

CONDITION: Good. Some scratches on table top and nicks on the edges. The finish is slightly alligatored. The piece was fumigated after entering the museum, as the discovery of frass indicated possible insect infestation.

Chair, Stained maple, beech, upholstered slip-seat and armpads. Back composed of two canted, identical open elements which meet at centerback. Each side of back consists of paired cusped arches below a quatrefoil inside a single larger ogival arch rising to a large finial. Lower portions of rear and front ribbed posts are octagonal with vertically-placed recessed rectangular panels which taper to pointed lower legs and small bun feet. Arms are padded with remnants of faded fabric terminating in grotesque mask handholds; bearded lion's head with pointed ears and ram's horns. Sided of arms with three pointed ribbed arches below armpads. Seat rail with oblong-shaped lozenges around front and sides. Rear seat rails are undecorated. Original stained faux-walnut finish.

CONDITION: Good.

Table clock. Wood (stained and painted), printed paper, glass, and metal. Original electrical wiring. Round wooden body, decorated with twelve incised radiating lines, sits on a black rectangular wooden base with convex front. Clock face of printed cream paper has a large gray circle at center; set behind glass. Surrounding center circle are radiating dots of two sizes; larger circles replace hours and smaller dots represent minutes. Narrow, red, straight, second hand. Black triangular hour and minute hands. Back of clock undecorated. Three dials and patent numbers on back.

CONDITION: Good; paper dial yellowed, wooden body over-cleaned, front is lacking varnish; black base repainted; on back (near proper left bottom screw) wood has split and broken off.

Dinner plate. Glazed Earthenware, cream ware body. Narrow concave rim. Design outline transfer printed with hand coloring. Large female fowl facing proper right with open beak and extended talons; feathers light brown, yellow-brown and light yellow. Proper right, down-curving orange poppy on light green stem with two poppy-buds. Bamboo-like branch in yellow-green intertwined with poppy. Abbreviated, abstract blue brush strokes in background above fowl.

Condition: Good; small rim chip at 11:00 o'clock; normal surface wear.

Pair of Spurs www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollecti…

A pair of silver spurs said to have been copied from an old pair now in the Museo Nacional in Mexico which belonged to Mr. Algara's family. There is no definite proof of this, however. They were made by William Spratling. They are engraved and decorated with relief carvings of dogs along the edges. Each rowel has twelve points and there is a silver chain in back of each spur.

"Heaven" pattern. Circular plate with wide rim in white porcelain with vitreous glaze and transfer-printed decorations. Rim is decorated with irregular bands of blue, which in places spills onto plate. Three comic cherubs in pink outline fly across top of plate.

Upholstered in leather. French provincial style. Rounded barrel back with arms sloping in continuous downward movement from back and terminating in boldly articulated knuckles upholstered over on leather. Has checkered woven seat and back, red and green interwoven cotton strapping. Back and sides stitched; threads exposed. Drop-in seat cushion also upholstered in leather; with buttons. Front seat rail of wood; slightly bowed. Front legs square in section; outsides slightly curved; inner sides undulated with widest point at juncture of flat, shaped front stretcher. Side and rear stretchers plain; rectangular. Each chair leg has a metal caster.

CONDITION - Good, right rear leg replacement; plastic wood added; wood considerably worm eaten; upholstery good.

Serving dish, silver-plate on nickel silver (white metal). Circular dish with deep bouge; flat rim with plain applied band. Edge of rim articulated in eight sections alternating serpentine scallops and flat, slightly rounded sections. Bouge and rim showing unplanished hammer marks in the arts-and-crafts manner.

CONDITION: Much wear and surface scratches, otherwise fine.

Opalescent or "Favrile" glass vase, pyriform shape with flaring lip and footed base in silvery green-blue iridescence on a mottled yellow ground with scalloped blue, brown and purple bands.

CONDITION: Broken and repaired; the break is about a half inch from the foot and continues all around the piece. Another crack goes up to the side and encircles the shoulder and neck. (lab report 4/4/97)

Highly polished round pewter plate with wide rim that curves upward at edge. Incised line around rim, about 1/4" from edge, and around center.

CONDITION: Poor; shows heavy use with deep scratches and pitting all over; rim has cracks that have been mended; rim is bent in several places; bottom of plate dented / misshapen such that plate does not sit level.

Candle holder, chromed metal and colorless glass; one of a pair. Flat rectangular metal base with three vertical stems; each stem consists of two squared metal rods aligned from front to back; in between the rods and running across the width of the object are six stacked glass cylinder rods that slide from side to side; on top of each stem is a flat metal square supporting a candle cup with flaring rim.

Condition: Good; some spots and light scratches on metal surfaces, small chips at ends of glass rods, crack in middle candle cup.

Sphinx doorstop, sewer pipe clay. The reclining sphinx is on a pedestal base and is a loose interperatation of the well-known Sphinx of Egypt. About three-quarters of the object was painted in a dark maroon color.

Condition: Good overall condition. Minor loss to the item around the nose and hair. Firing cracks to the base.

Doll's or Child's Side Chair: wood, plywood, brass tacks. Two turned front legs with rings in center and near juncture with seat rail are joined by a turned, double-ringed stretcher above midpoint and by a plain front seat rail. Two plain stretchers on each side and one plain stretcher connecting rear legs. Rear stiles form rear legs then cant backward to support back; connected at top by arched crest rail. Back and seat formed by continuous piece of three-ply plywood with shaped edges at back, connected to frame by six brass tacks at front seat rail, six brass tacks at crest rail and two brass tacks at each rear stile near where rear seat rail would be. Seat pierced with star in circle in rectangle; back pierced with the word "PET' below pierced crest and above "Y" under arc.

Condition: Some joints loose. Plywood splintered at mid-section of proper right edge of seat. Stain on finish of seat. Some splintering around pierced holes on underside, especially at seat and near central hole near crest. Oxidation to brass tacks. General wear.

Glazed earthenware, white with gray flecks, thick-walled covered dish (a) and lid (b). Dish is a biomorphic, oval shape with one end pulled to a point and a molded rectangular handle with oval cut-out attached at rim on long side. Transfer-printed decorative band along inside edge opposite handle consisting of dark gray ribbon pattern superimposed on light gray band of elongated oval shapes. Conforming flat lid has two molded indented finger grips in center and same decorative band along side. When lid is turned so that the decoration is at top, lid resembles an anthropomorphized head.

Condition: Very good.

Table lamp, "Steelite #5". Steel, fiberglass, wood, rubber, thread. Welded steel base of trapezoidal form raised on four rounded black rubber feet; on top of base, round black rubber socket with oblong clear light bulb at center; flanking light bulb are two tall metal rods attached near top by horizontal metal rod inside wooden tube, from which is suspended a black mesh shade of trapezoidal shape joined by thread, wire rods, and tiny black rubber washers; black industrial electrical cord attached to underside at base.

CONDITION - Excellent.

Wine glass, molded etched colorless glass; U-shaped bowl, stepped rectangular stem, low pyramidal seamed rectangular base etched on underside in two repeats of shooting star motif. Etched decoration on bowl consists of motif repeated three times: ridged six-pointed star enclosed by four graduated star outlines contained within four concentric circles; shooting star motif with two stars flanking tail moves from top left to bottom right of each circle.

CONDITION: Very good.
