Chicago resident here, baffled by my city’s placement.

This is how I ended up spending 45 minutes (in a gown & heels!) stuck in an overcrowded elevator that descended to the sub-basement of the Palmer House hotel in Chicago. Once they found us and pried the doors open, we were ~3 feet below the floor. CFD had to haul us out one at a time.

My vaccine appointment is in a few hours, so I’ll see how it goes for me this year soon. I’m in the Midwest, and “early to mid October” is my doc’s usual suggestion. We don’t seem to be getting the early wave some other parts of the country are seeing.

Moving the arm after a vaccine is a great suggestion. I’ve adopted it, but it appears that I am still destined for “arm hurts, ow” for a day or two after getting a shot. Not fun, but a small price to pay to avoid getting really, really sick.

Booked for flu & Covid shots tomorrow. Have done them at the same time the last couple of years and it has gone ok. (Sore arm, feel kinda crappy for ~24 hours. Way better than getting either flu or Covid.)

My appointment for both flu & Covid vaccines is tomorrow! Having a sore arm and (maybe) feeling lousy for ~24 hours sure beats the alternative.

Isn’t it funny how many different ways white men have come up with to justify their “right” to rule (and, not coincidentally, have sex with anyone they want)?

There’s a synagogue one block away from my hair salon. I usually get haircuts on Saturdays and almost always see a security guard outside the synagogue. I happened to get a haircut the weekend of Rosh Hashana. There were at least three security guards that Saturday. :(

A lot of people who claim to be big believers in free markets don’t like the results of actual free markets.

Happy 906 Day to all who celebrate.

Before Target decided to embrace bigotry, I used to buy most toiletry items there, since my local Target doesn’t lock them up. (They do lock up pricy liquor and higher-end skincare, but most stuff is grab-and-go.) But now I’m boycotting Target, so it’s back to buzzing for drugstore mascara.

I can share my West Loop Walgreens experience with locked items: when employee finally arrives, I point at the item I want, the employee retrieves it from the case, then hands it to me and I carry it to the counter. (I hate all of this.)

Tenure at *Minnesota* at that. It’s not even the top ranked Big 10 law school! Where does he think he works, Harvard or Yale? (Apologies to the many fine profs and students at Minnesota who do not deserve to be brought down by this bozo.)

I suspect some people perceive literal public service as a bad thing—the mayor is supposed to be a Big Shot ordering people around, not politely applying wristbands and offering directions like some minimum-wage nobody. Lotta authoritarian followers out there.

“Small government” and “state’s rights” were always a lie. What they really believe is that power should rest at whatever level will enact their preferred policies.

Proud moment: when a respected con law prof came down to the law review office (!) to tell us an article was one of the best things he’d read on the post-Civil War amendments (sigh) in years and he was looking forward to seeing the final paper in print. (2/2)

3L year, I was one of 3 articles editors. No peer-review, but policy was to run every draft article by a faculty member with appropriate expertise to make sure we weren’t going to publish anything embarrassing. (1/2)

In my 2L year, I cite-checked an article that had 528 footnotes. Even with the help of several “source gatherers” (other law review members who tracked down anything not online), I needed an extension. But I did it, because that was the job.

Student-run law reviews rightly get criticism for not being peer-reviewed, but they absolutely pull every source to confirm it exists and says what it is cited for! That’s what a cite-check is! You check ALL the cites.

When I left Big Law 11 years ago (yikes), my old shop had just implemented 2 weeks of paternity leave for associates. I heard they raised it to 4 weeks at some point. More importantly, some guys were actually using it (sometimes 1/2 when the kid arrived and 1/2 when spouse returned to work).

In short, the current Good Friday Catholic liturgy isn’t a Mass. Telling Catholics there won’t be a Mass on Good Friday is like saying “Free Cheeseburgers for Protestant Attendees” on Good Friday. Observant Catholics are fasting anyway, not that it diminishes the insult.

BeLinda Mathie @bmathie.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
If you want to limit the statement to “currently, the Church does not conduct Mass on Good Friday,” consider the record amended. FWIW, there are several other differences between the Good Friday liturgy & a traditional Mass beyond “not consecrating the Eucharist.” www.ncregister.com/blog/grondel...

5 Things to Know About the Liturgy for Good Friday
‘Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name.’ (Philippians 2:8-9)

Oh man, a real-life “well, actually” opportunity, not that the Pentagon will understand/care. There NEVER is a Catholic Mass on Good Friday. It’s the one day the Church doesn’t celebrate Mass; the GF liturgy is distinct. But way to make clear Catholics don’t count as Christian in certain eyes.
