Went to the lab to do some science. Lost lots of time. But also sorted out quite a few things. This reminds me that I am not employed to just read reports and write emails.

This is an interesting piece that covers the flaws in the current system, and also offers some views on what future systems of paper evaluation may surface. I am skeptical, but also interested in what directions emerge... (I also like clear sass on paper volume 💅)
Text that reads:

Counting productivity

The simplest metrics count papers. Totals travel well across forms, spreadsheets and panels — papers overall, papers as first or senior author, papers in the last five years. A long list suggests energy. It can also reflect a field where papers are cheap, a laboratory organised for output, a culture of fragmented publication, or a career spent near large collaborative machines. A short list can mean low productivity. It can also mean slow experiments, difficult fieldwork, a hard organism, a risky idea, a piece of software, a dataset, or years spent making something work before it produced any papers.

These 3 reports are not glowing of my teaching - I get pretty rubbish scores, and the comments don't do me favors. The comments rile me (more later). BUT the statistical threshold of reporting for my class cohort size is 40% return. 5/

So yesterday - I managed to run a marathon. It's a hard & type ~2.5 activity. It wasn't helped by the cold rain, & yes, I am unsure if I will do it again. Chosen to do because it's a thing grown people can do at a certain age & I hang out with too many runners. A representative self at the end.

You also might like SEM micrograph set - showing the different detectors. T1 = BSE heavy; T2 = ~near surface SE; T3 = very surface SE, and high contrast. From the same titanium alloy sample/area - just with the immersion lens on, and contrast well balanced etc. (These are quite small areas, 😅) 🧪🔬
A set of three micrographs showing the different imaging modes of the microscope, and then a higher magnification zoom of the same area. Each panel is a grey scale image showing microstructural features. The scales on these are both 'great', with a 1 micrometer scale bar for the upper set and a 100 nm scale bar for the lower set.

One joy from my job is that I still get to do some hands on microscopy. Here we have the microstructure structure of a titanium alloy, as revealed with our new scanning electron microscope. The width of this image is the same as the width of human hair. 🔬🧪
A great scale image showing lots of grains and internal structure. The micrograph is 100 micrometers across.

I always have this quotation in mind when I, purposefully, Out myself to a class of engineering students. (Quote from Cech and Waidzunas 2011 doi.org/10.1080/1937...)
Text that reads:
Eric’s responses illustrate the pressures he faced to pass as straight:

Before I was out . . . I happened to laugh in a very gay way and [another student] mocked my laugh in the same kind of gay way that I laughed and then asked me, with obvious hostility, ‘are you gay?’ Other people were around him at the same time. And I said, ‘no,’ I was not gay. (respondent looks visibly uncomfortable at this point; he grimaced as he said this line, tugged at his shirt, shifted in his seat between ‘no’ and ‘I was not gay.’) Fortunately, the conversation ended there, but he really hurt me by that. He made me feel unsafe, and denigrated based on my sexuality. I never forgave him for that. (Eric)

We can also talk about the IP theft that was performed to train many of the "successful" LLMs - and I seem to recall that most Universities try really hard to protect the IP of their members, and yet, roll over in buying into some of the AI-hype... www.wired.com/story/anthro...
Text from wired that state:

"But the judge ruled that the manner in which Anthropic had acquired some of the works, by downloading them through so-called shadow libraries, including a notorious site called LibGen, constituted piracy. Alsup ruled that the book authors could still take Anthropic to trial in a class action for pirating their works; the legal showdown was slated to begin in December.

Statutory damages for this kind of piracy start at $750 per infringed work, according to US copyright law. Because the library of books amassed by Anthropic was thought to contain approximately 7 million works, the AI company was potentially facing court-imposed penalties amounting to billions, possibly more than $1 trillion dollars"

I stand with workers and their right to withhold their labour via a strike. I appreciate the intent of Federal Powers that can curtail strikes in a national interest, but invoking then only 12 hrs into a strike feels like an overreach. #AirCanada www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Text that states: "To legislate us back to work 12 hours after we started? I'm sorry, snowstorms have shut down Air Canada for longer than we were allowed to strike."

It's a simple headline that hides lots of detail. Most of the renewables have a technical potential that is >1x current energy demands, and they will all help us move forward (probably with some other choices) For geothermal - it's worth thinking about technical potential & locations
