I was just amazed at how un-sheepish the rest of Europe (apart from the UK, that is) was.

The elderly Polish gentleman who used to live opposite me (and always raised his hat when we met in the street) fought at Monte Cassino. He looked after the museum in the Polish club in London well into his nineties, and managed to go back for one of the recent commrmorations.

Democracy volunteers is Britain's biggest observer group. They observe all UK elections, plus some European and parts of US elections. John Ault is their chair and spokesman.

It's ridiculous that he could have organised thuggery on this scale without anyone noticing.

If there's ever a time for invasive police powers, surely this is it. There should be a police car permanently parked outside this Tommo bloke's house to keep an eye on him. They should be tapping his phone, bugging his house and reading his emails. We know they can do it. 1/2

People say to me, "You lived in Africa. You must be fine in the heat." Last Thursday Abidjan, where I lived, was 25 degrees. London was 38.7.......

Yup. That's why everyone in Liberia took the wheels off their car.

Don't go to India. Metal beakers and plates everywhere, only mitigated in some cases by a banana leaf on top.

What a great thread! Social media was made for this.

Those are what we used to call "lying down shoes", only to be considered if you expected to spend most of the evening horizontal!

Surely the main issue with early release is that they will come out and do it again. A real worry with domestic abuse cases, but no one is suggesting these prisoners will come out and run over more policemen.

I always thought Soho was more about horizontal drinking.

Do you know if the museum (or indeed anywhere else) sells replicas? I would love a set of cups like that.

She was doing a social work placement, and found it a fairly extraordinary place. Not cruel, as some were, but rather cloying; the nuns didn't seem to want the girls to leave.

Back in the 1960s I had a friend who worked in St Uncumber's Mother and Baby home. I suppose the nuns thought a bearded virgin was a suitable role model for their unmarried mothers.

Exactly. And Balogun himself was reported as saying he accepted the referee's decision. But then when FIFA said he could play, he accepted that. And that was all he had to say. I hope this affair doesn't blight his whole career.

He also reportedly said that when he got a red card he accepted the referee's decision. When FIFA told him he could play, he accepted that, and he had nothing more to say. Good man.

The BBC is celebrating the US's 250th anniversary by rebroadcasting its classic 1996 series on American art. This, on America's classical vision for its national capital, is sadly timely. American Visions, 1. The Republic of Virtue: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00g6w7m

Robert Hughes charts the foundation of a national identity that sought architectural inspiration from Greece and Rome. He also looks at America's earliest major painters.

Wake up at dawn. Open everything. As soon as the sun is up, close curtains on the sunny side of the house. When outside temperatures start to rise, close everything and don't open again until it's cooler outside than in. The flaw in this is you can never get cooler than the night time temperature.

Radio has to make do with having strange, unexplained noises in the background, blogs get something which makes no sense on paper, and heaven knows what listeners in Mogadishu make of it, once it's been translated for the Somali service. 2/2

And that is because the Corporation's favourite way of saving money is to do just one report and use it across all outlets. And since domestic TV are the big boys, they get their reports tailor made. 1/2

True story: Andy Burnham’s wife, Frankie van Heel, is Dutch. Years ago she went on the TV show Blind Date, and won a date with a guy who turned out to be comms director for the Conservative Party. When they got backstage she said: “Fuck off, I never want to see you again”. And then she married Andy.
