Microfluidics reveals new strategy for disrupting bacterial communication - Bluetools project
A new microfluidics screening method finds genes that disrupt bacterial communication, revealing a novel quorum quenching mechanism.

Screened around 7,000,000 clones from Antarctic plant rhizospheres. One confirmed hit. One previously undescribed mechanism. Proof that microfluidics can unlock the hidden diversity of microbial communities.

Bluetools Project @bluetools-project.eu · 24/06/2026
Quorum sensing drives biofilm formation, virulence, and other key bacterial behaviours. Disrupting it — quorum quenching — is a promising alternative to antibiotics. But finding new quorum quenching genes has always been slow and costly. This study tackles that head on.

From lake microbes to light controlled technologies: discovering HulaChrimson - Bluetools project
Researchers have now identified HulaChrimson, a newly discovered channelrhodopsin found through freshwater metatranscriptomic sampling in Lake Hula, Israel.

The findings suggest colour tuning depends on the broader architecture of the protein and its internal interaction network, not just a few amino acids.

Bluetools Project @bluetools-project.eu · 27/05/2026
Despite their similarity, HulaChrimson showed a major surprise: its light absorption shifted strongly toward shorter wavelengths. Small sequence differences alone could not explain the effect.
