Ahhh ok I see it now. As others have stated, this was not a good plan by the pilot. They clearly expected to clear the bridge you were on, but almost stalled the plane trying, and were left with no choice but to go under.

I just want to make sure I’m looking at this correctly (pic from another comment in this thread): you’re on the third bridge from the bottom in this photo, correct? Wouldn’t their flight path be directly toward those large without banking to the right?

I believe they were just banking right to follow the curve of the river. Continuing straight ahead would’ve flown them into buildings on the west side of the river.
