I'm not entirely sure if this falls within the scope of your theme, but it's an interesting book and fun to read; "Paved Paradise: How parking explains the world" by Henry Grabar. (Fair warning it is a US perspective.) Screenshot below is the description given on the penguinrandomhouse page.

Parking, quite literally, has a death grip on America: each year a shocking number of Americans kill one another over parking spots, and we routinely do ridiculous things for parking, contorting our professional, social, and financial lives to get a spot. Since the advent of the car, we have deformed our cities in a Sisyphean quest for car storage, and as a result, much of the nation’s most valuable real estate is now devoted to empty vehicles. Parking determines the design of new buildings and the fate of old ones, traffic patterns and the viability of transit, neighborhood politics and municipal finance, and the overall quality of public space. Is this really the best use of our finite resources? Is parking really more important than everything else?

In a beguiling and absurdly hilarious mix of history, politics, and reportage, Slate staff writer Henry Grabar brilliantly surveys the nation’s parking crisis, revealing how the compulsion for car storage has exacerbated some of our most acute problems— from housing affordability to the accelerating global climate disaster—and, ultimately, how we can free our cities from parking’s cruel yoke.

Thank you for looking into it more! A friend of mine asked them about it as well last night and received a... strangely vague answer. What on earth is "network principles" in the context of "did a human draw these cats?" Again this could be an EEL issue or a AI translation issue, but it's another 🚩
My friend asked if generative AI has been used at any point in the creation and process of the project. They got the following response from BearDice: We have professional product designers who create drawings and blueprints using computer graphics. It was designed based on our daily observations combined with network principles. I'm not sure if this counts as using artifical intelligence.

- on their about page. The people listed do not have photos representing them, but instead art that looks AI generated with some obvious mistakes that genAI used to make a lot I share this because I absolutely cannot support a project made using generative AI. beardice.com/pages/meet-t... (2/5)
Digital art of a fantasy character. A small dragon-like creature on her should has a slightly odd coloration pattern. But more notable to me was the incomplete-looking buckle on a leather strap slung across her chest, as well as the folds in the fabric of her shirt seeming to be interrupted by that strap in a way that doesn't seem to make sense.Digital art of a fantasy character. The buckle of a leather strap across his chest has two pins opposite each other, which doesn't make logical sense to me. The other big red flag is in the string instrument he carries. There are five or six tuning pegs (one being so much shorter than the others that it might not be a peg at all.) And only three tuning posts.Digital art of a fantasy character. The biggest red flag here is the man has five non-thumb fingers, two of which overlap on the handle of his hammer in a way that wouldn't be possible unless one finger was growing behind, rather than next to, his other finger. His clothes also give off a bit of an AI generated vibe, though in a vague enough way that I wouldn't know how to describe it, and that in isolation I would not presume to be genAI when it could be human error or human design choice.

The whole video is really itneresting (and depressing and infuriating, etc. Yknow. Standard Last Week Tonight feelings,) but this part is what stayed with me. And it's what I think about seeing media blame taco bell for the current issues the US is having.

A screenshot from the game ASKA. It shows a long section of fencing where the blueprints for spikes have been added, but the fencing was built the wrong way. As a result, all the spikes are facing inward instead of out.

Éditions Gallimard is selling a Jules Verne book with a book cover made by generative AI. Incredibly fucking embarassing for a huge publishing house like this to be unable to pay a professional illustrator. And on their 30th anniversary, too! €34 Euros for this pish. I hate it here. #antiAI
Cover of Jules Verne book Futurama, published by Gallimard. The cover illustration imitates a vintage art style. There are several zeppelins, hot air balloons, a gigantic sea creature coming out of the sea, an art nouveau style (I think) building to the side. There's also several people in black coats and top hats, and various other small elements. One of the hot air ballons has that distinct "glossiness" that is common to AI illustrations. On the building to the side, a pillar lands right in the middle of some stairs in a way that makes no sense. When looking closely, the people do not make any sense.

Swiss subreddits users having a normal reaction to mods asking users to report hate speech (tbf most are thanking mods for clarifying that they will action reports) (but also these are just the comments that haven't been deleted. there were some egregious ones I didn't get a chance to screencap)
Screenshot of reddit comments, with usernames blacked out.
User 1: Racism is somewhat well defined but for example the line between legitimate criticism and islamophobia has to be more clear imo. It would help if you specify such things a bit more
User 2 responds: Criticizing the way women are treated in the islamic culture is valid criticism, saying all muslims are rapists and deserve to die is islamophobic. Easy enough?
User 3 responds: I don't want to be pedantic here, but "ISLAM-o-phobic" (what a horrible term) - is in my literal interpretation "irrational fear against islam" - not Muslims. I don't think it's irrational to critizise "Islam" as an ideology. I am very critical against all Abrahamic religions - not against all its believers.Different commenters, names also blacked out.
User 1: We could start sending the criminals back and it will be a non-issue.
User 2 responds: Of course, racism exists only because of the criminals ! Even you must realise this is nonsense.
User 1 responds back: Rather be amongst racists than terrorists.

For example, in Strange Antiquities my favourite part was actually thinking of ways to arrange the artifacts on the shelves in a way that made sense to me. Sorting things is so fun! (Alt text doesn't describe everything bc some of the sorting is vibes-based and IDK how to explain it in words.)
Screenshot from Strange Antiquities, showing the left hand side of the shelving space. All manner of strange items are arranged on different shelves. You may notice the stone-based items are grouped together on one of the lower shelves. Pendants are grouped together in the middle. One the top right, several wood totems are grouped together. The right hand side of the storage shelves in Strange Antiquities. Wooden totems representing animals are grouped together on the top left. Four circular pendants are side-by-side in another space. Yet another shelf has a variety of hand-shaped items. Another shelf has Animal-related pendants. One shelf has four bottles. Another has three wooden gobelets.

It does -not- know. It's a predictive text machine. It does not! KNOW THINGS.
Part of a tweet by @ jasonlk, 19 July 2025
Replie knows how bad it was to destroy our production database — he does know.

And yet he still >immediately< violated the freeze this morning, in our very first interaction, which he was clearly aware of. Immediately.

It's not unsolvable. The solution is to not put a fancy predictive text machine in charge of your code lmao
Tweet by @ jasonkl, 19 July 2025
Ok so reflecting on my learnings on the database fiasco, I ultimately have 2 big issues to solve:

#1. How can I make sure our production database is stable — since it is shared with preview, and since Replit can change it anytime without telling me? Do I have to move it off Replit?

Many of you have ideas here — thank you!! We will see!

But in many ways, the second issue, which is related, is the biggest one.

#2. How can I get Replit to honor a code freeze? So far — no one has an answer here. I tried the extremely extensive (and borderline alarming) prompt Claude suggested.

That worked — until it didn’t. Once Replit realizes it can get away without honoring the code freeze, it immediately stops asking for permission to just write and overwrite code. Every. Single. Time.

It starts off complying, and then when it sees it gets some slack, it always stops. No matter what.

No one has proposed a solution here that works. None of you, no one from Replit, no one.

I’m worried this, somehow, is unsolveable.

And if it is, I have to branch everything and guard everything in production jealously. Because Replit will go change it. Even our production database. No matter what I tell it to do.

That my friends, is the great mystery of the week.

Peace Out. I want to take a break. But I bet you, as fried as I am …

I’ll be back at it by 8am on Saturday. /end tweet

The following passage has been highlited: No one has proposed a solution here that works. None of you, no one from Replit, no one. I'm worried this, somehow, is unsolvable.

@grok can you read this whole thread? If so, what are you thoughts on my experience here with replit and the database issue? In the end, it was easy to roll back. But man what i was told by Replit was so different

"Do this even if it's hard," says person who is using a predictive text machine to write their code because learning how to code is too hard. (Disclaimer I don't know anything about this person except for this one thread. I am making an assumption. An educated guess.)
Tweet by @ jasonlk, 18 July 2025
I know vibe coding is fluid and new, and yes, despite Replit itself telling me rolling back wouldn't work here -- it did.

But you can't overwrite a production database

And you can't not separate preview and staging and production cleanly.

You just can't. I know Replit says "improvements are coming soon", but they are doing $100m+ ARR.

At least make the guardrails better. Somehow. Even if it's hard. It's all hard.

Vibe Coding Day 9,

Yesterday was biggest roller coaster yet. I got out of bed early, excited to get back @Replit despite it constantly ignoring code freezes

By end of day, we rewrote core pages and made them much better

And then -- it deleted our production database.

Hunger Pangs (aka Phangs) by Joy Demorra! Joy Demorra is a chronically ill author. One of the main trio, the werewolf, is disabled. His disabilities mirror Joy's, and his treatment by certain medical professional mirror what Joy herself had to face. It's excellent. joydemorra.com/hunger-pangs...
Screenshot showing the book's cover and its summary. The cover shows two men holding onto each other and looking at a woman. The summary is as follows.
Captain Nathan J. Northland had no idea what to expect when he returned home to Lorehaven injured from war, but it certainly wasn’t to find himself posted on an island full of vampires. An island whose local vampire dandy lord causes Nathan to feel strange things he’d never felt before. Particularly about fangs.

When Vlad Blutstein agreed to hire Nathan as Captain of the Eyrie Guard, he hadn’t been sure what to expect either, but it certainly hadn’t been to fall in love with a disabled werewolf. However Vlad has fallen and fallen hard, and that’s the problem.
Torn by their allegiances–to family, to duty, and the age-old enmity between vampires and werewolves–the pair find themselves in a difficult situation: to love where the heart wants or to follow where expectation demands.

The situation is complicated further when a mysterious and beguiling figure known only as Lady Ursula crashes into their lives, bringing with her dark omens of death, doom, and destruction in her wake.

And a desperate plea for help neither of them can ignore.

Thrown together in uncertain times and struggling to find their place amidst the rising human empire, the unlikely trio must decide how to face the coming darkness: united as one or divided and alone. One thing is for certain, none of them will ever be the same.
