We might debate the relative smartness of those "exchanges" vs their inefficiency. I think when all is said and done (a month, a year, a decade from now), we're just going to HAVE to fall back on the Turing Test. After all, you only have my text output at this moment, and you assumed I have skin.

Absolutely. The companies don't want damage ('Tay'-style) to the product or its outputs. I find it interesting, though, when some ppl (not you) deny any potential machine intelligence ... and also seem to negate the human variety, at least definitionally.

I hear you, and I'm inclined to agree, but what do you say when confronted by great numbers of people who only express the language/performance of sorrow or regret because they were conditioned to do so (and to expect 'social lubrication' as a consequence)? Such ppl often evince no actual empathy.

I like Bernard Beckett's twist on the Chinese Room thought experiment in his novel "Genesis," which basically flips the Turing test on its head. I can tell you that I'm typing here, watching TV in my living room, but all you have is the output text. Am I reasoning? Am I sentient?

The closer of the opinion piece really gets me with regard to our students. A large chunk of young people hate the slop, and rightly so. We should listen to them.

This is a valid point (in pedagogical theory), except that most of us (and our courses) are about teaching robust, valid content and understandings of the world (whether it's history, engineering, what have you). Disproving a bad tool is not necessarily a good or focused use of most curricular time.
