Probably because so many Australians have Irish or Scottish ancestry, we also like to play jokes on tourists, particularly American ones. Sorry I can't divulge though. You have to come here to find out 😀

Yes, we must rapidly move away from large-scale cattle /sheep / pig farming, and industrial fishing. In some areas invasive animals can be eaten, but we need an overall shift to plant-based diets and precision fermentation (lab-grown protein) products.

Approving 38 new coal & gas projects is also a failing. Doesn't seem to bother Albo and his fossil fuel donors.

Nor do the community Independents. Stop voting for parties that take donations from big business and fossil fuel cos. And if there isn't a decent alternative in your electorate, form a 'Voices Of' group to find one.

Breaking: High Court rules in favour of climate in Hunter Valley coal mine case
Australia's High Court rules in favour of a Hunter Valley community group in a landmark climate ruling that could redraw how fossil fuel projects are approved in Australia.

Yep and who's even going to cut their hair? This thinking is from people who've never had to actually DO anything because some poorer person (nanny, cleaner, plumber, farmer, ♀️ in developing country sewing their clothes / shoes) has done it for them. But they don't see those people as human.

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Yes the point of farming was to store surpluses & survive droughts/harsh winters etc. Settling down meant not everyone had to hunt for food all the time, allowing greater specialisation and hierarchies to develop. Even so, humans are a social species, and have survived mainly through collaboration.
010
Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Agree we have a very unequal society. But that's not 'human nature'. There is no 'basic human nature' other than to survive. Humans lived co-operatively for tens of 1,000's of years before farming, which led to some accumulating wealth.

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Exactly. This is their thinking: a techno-heaven where they don't work or do anything productive and everything is handed to them. I guess this seems logical for privileged white men who've never grown any food, nursed a child/sick person or cleaned a toilet.

I hope this young man has a great future ahead of him. But I also hope any girls doing similar also have a great future as fashion designers. Girls are expected to sew and make clothes but the fashion industry is still dominated at the top by men. We don't celebrate ♀️'s skills enough.

Why is someone who promotes British monoculture drinking coffee? The drink comes from Ethiopia / Yemen and was popularised here by Italian & Greek migrants.

One Australian state just decided to get rid of its diesel buses and go fully electric. At the same time, another Australian state decided to rip up its plans for electric buses and go back to diesel. Can you guess which states they were? thedriven.io/2026/10/06/o... #auspol #qldpol #springst

Victoria opens tender for hundreds of new electric buses, less than a month after Queensland ripped up its own plans and decided to buy 630 diesel buses instead.

I've been fighting fossil fuel expansion for >2 decades & given up most paid work to focus on building the climate movt. I don't need a lecture. I also think doomism "We're all gonna die so there's no hope" is as bad as denialism. Many millions will die. Not all. I'm fighting to save what we can.
010
Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
So do you have any non-compromised research showing forecasts for various parts of Australia by mid-century? Or is it just "we're all gonna die" ?
100
Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You've made your point that the IPCC are compromised. That's not the same as saying all scientists are compromised. I try to listen to the science. There is a spectrum of forecasts but I haven't seen anyone saying 80% of Australians are going to die in 20 years. Have you?

❄️☀️ China’s Qinling research station is showing that renewable energy can work in some seriously challenging conditions. The Antarctic base is already getting around half its power from renewables, with plans to eventually reach 100%. It could eventually replace hundreds of tonnes of diesel 🌱

China's Antarctic Base Gets Half Its Power From Renewables And Is On Track For 100% - BGR
Antarctica is cold, and if you want to live there you need to bring diesel to keep the heaters on, but China is trying to do it all with renewables.

Yes I've seen it. I know our atmosphere is rapidly heating. But where is the science showing predicted local impacts in various parts of Australia?

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
OK so who do we listen to? The Australian Academy of Sciences (who I linked) don't have fossil fuel connections. I've read every report on Australia I can find and while the picture is terrifying, I've not seen anyone say 80% of us will die in 20 yrs. Happy to read any links you have.

Is there any kind of map which shows where they are being proposed, and what resources (electricity grid / power plants / water) they are likely to use? Also, do we know about any partnerships btw fossil fuel cos and data centres?

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Can you pls link the science on that? IPCC high emissions pathways show those temps 2050 - 2100, not in 20 yrs. Northern Aust may become uninhabitable but most of us don't live there now. Nor is most food grown there. People will move to alpine regions, or Tasmania. science.org.au/sites/defaul...

When "sensible centre" = housing crisis, cost-of-living crisis, and constantly approving new coal & gas extraction amidst a climate crisis, it's not very sensible, is it @news.abc.net.au ?

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Sure, developers build multi-housing and then sell individual homes. What I'm talking about is the people who buy those homes but don't live in them. Housing co-ops are great but sadly Australia doesn't have any (unless you count social housing co-ops where residents don't own anything).

In Australia we have a preferential #voting system which I highly recommend. Little need for tactical voting as your vote is never wasted. Idk why the UK hasn't adopted this years ago. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC_Q...

Homes need repair no matter who owns them. Investors don't create new homes, just prevent those who actually live there from owning. In fact many landlords don't do much maintenance because it's mainly the increase in land value that makes them a profit. Just ask any renter.

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yeah, and that is what's been encouraged here. But when people invest in housing rather than say medical innovation or renewable energy, their investments don't contribute to our economy, since houses don't actually produce anything. It just makes some wealthy at the expense of others.

Yes, we all need to live closer together, and share more. I was initially responding to an Australian post. Since the 90's here, we've had tax incentives for middle/upper class to buy investment properties which has led to housing crisis & >30% pop'n now forever renting, mostly from those investors.

Do not get depressed. Get angry. Get organised. Get voting. Way too many people thought they'd elected a pro-climate govt and have no idea this is happening. We need to get the word out.
023
Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I don't get this logic. You have to live somewhere. If overall house prices rise, you can sell for profit but you'll pay more for another place. If they go down and you sell, it'll be cheaper to buy elsewhere. The main beneficiaries of price rises are those owning homes they don't live in.

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I didn't see any of that so I don't know where that appeared but yeah, the left needs to get the message out about who is really to blame for the housing crisis. Migrants have always been the scapegoat for every social problem but sadly the left often hasn't offered other solutions.
010
Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yeah, I think we should differentiate btw what seems popular (free candy! lower taxes! ban people who don't look like you!) and what is for the common good (public services, care for country). The left is meant to be for the latter and I think we really need to make this clearer to the public.

The 80's was the beginning of neoliberalism. Or hyper-capitalism. I hadn't heard of "progressive populism" before so thanks. I guess Max wants to distinguish his politics from the middle class elitism the Greens often convey. I hope David can also work to change that perception.

I would argue the housing 'market' is working exactly as intended - to make $$ for those who invest in housing. The fact that this has made so many people homeless or kept in insecure dilapidated rentals is part of the design.

Bowerbird @bluebowerbird.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I'm old enough to remember Bob Hawke selling out workers via the Accord, and I've never heard the term "populist left". The left, as defined during the French Revolution, was always against the monarchy and for the common people. The far right try to be popular but only among white people.
