Early morning before we opened, the pools of sunlight break through the expanding woodland canopy transforming the colours of the bluebells from blue to purple.

We are delighted with our new display boards! Designed by Sarah from Cherry Wood Adventures, this wonderful resource gives a glimpse of the magic of Beatons Wood and how much there is to see beyond the bluebells 😊

Two images from the wood, both taken yesterday afternoon, show what a contrast between different areas. From the snowy white covering of the wood anemones to the deep blue carpet of the bluebells, this year's display is a delightful journey through the different stages of springtime woodland flora.

What an early spring, which we certainly did not expect, when we set the opening date in July! The white wood anemones are fully out and there are many bluebells in flower. I post an update every Tue and Fri on our website. The next will be on Good Friday, the day we open. Photo by Pete Goldsmith.

🍄The woods can be a very colourful place. White wood anemones and bluebells will soon show a carpet of colour but look closely and you might find something different. "Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric)" by Alan Saltmarsh won 1st prize in the Close Up category of our photo competition. #woodland #fungi

We get some very creative entries in our photographic competition. If you have visited the Bluebell Walk you will probably be familiar with this hollowed tree stump. Rupert Kirby cleverly framed his "Beautiful Vista", receiving a Highly Commended award from the judges last year.

Bluebells can now be seen in all areas of the wood and the white wood anemone are gradually going to seed. The beautiful blue haze is really stunning in places and this will be enhanced as more flowers emerge. Did you know that the sap from bluebells can be used as an adhesive?

The white wood anemones are still the star of the woodland floor. Some of the flowers are flushed pink due to genetic variation, soil conditions or the environment. The bluebells are increasing day by day, being held back by the cold nights. But the blue areas are emerging gradually.

That unique fragrance as bluebells are fully out. Amazing that it is still April. Back in the 70’s there were virtually no bluebells in April. Having no real winters with weeks of frost and snow, shows how nature has now adapted!
