Perhaps let’s turn it around. I’m reading Aurelius’s Meditations, and the opposite of being ‘awake’ is to be ‘blind’. Which is such an accurate description, don’t you think? Blind to the truth, blind to the suffering of others, blind to reality. Selfishly, willfully blind.
