Tracking a 2008 student cohort for 11 years, we found that by 2018, over 27% had dropped out, and age-grade discrepancy peaked at 33.1% in 2015. Only 44.5% reached the 3rd year of high school, showing how retention heavily conditions progress.

On a different note, in April 2025, I ran my first marathon – the São Paulo International. A couple of weeks ago, I took on a real cross-country race on forest trails. I went for the tough 11 km route, but it was a lot of fun!

The figure shows the projection of life expectancy at birth, WPP 2024 medium scenario, by sex for Brazil and overall for the world. The results indicate that after the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to a significant drop in life expectancy at birth, it returns to growth.

One of the best things of #paa2024 is to see old friends one does see in person for long time. In Columbus I got to hang out with my good old friend from Berkeley Demography, Trevon Logan, and talk about life and research.
